Real Wedding: Katie and Joel, New Carlisle, Ohio

When Katie and Joel decided to marry at her parents dairy farm, they knew it would take a lot of hard work, but they had a feeling it would all be worth it. After commissioning a good friend to create a piece of art that would inspire their day, they got right to work DIYing every whimsical detail that followed.  With the help of their loving family and supportive friends, they spent seven months cleaning, painting, re-wiring and preparing the grounds.  Although the weather had been finicky leading up to it, nothing could stand in the way of this rustic and oh-so-charming celebration.  Briana Snyder Photography was on-hand to document just how seamlessly a working dairy farm was transformed into the most romantic spot on earth.
Surrounded by the ones they love (and several farm animals too!) Katie and Joel knew all their hard work had paid off.

Thanks to Briana Snyder Photography for sharing these beautiful images with us, and to Katie and Joel for reminding us that love is the perfect reason to roll up your sleeves.

From the Bride, Katie…

Joel and I didn’t have a theme in mind when we began planning our wedding, but we both come from wonderfully large and loving families. More than anything, we wanted our wedding day to center on family. It had been a quiet dream of mine to marry at my family’s farm, a place rich with meaning and memories for me. I almost couldn’t believe it when Joel thought the farm would be a wonderful place to begin our marriage, and my parents agreed! I asked a graphic designer friend to create some original artwork that would be a symbolic centerpiece for the wedding, and she freehanded a beautiful tree that perfectly illustrated family and new life. We displayed the tree at the reception and used the graphic to create our own invitations and programs.

In keeping with the family theme, almost everything about the wedding was DIY and carried about by my parents, siblings, in-laws, and close friends. We had our work cut out for us, too—we had just seven months to transform a working dairy farm into the beautiful, idyllic setting I pictured in my mind. The biggest job was clearing the barn of old machinery, tools, and five-foot round bales of hay, then fixing the floors and electrical wiring to make it a safe environment for the reception. We used materials from around the farm wherever possible. We covered a few holes and gaps in the floors with the old license plates my grandpa had collected decades earlier, and created chandeliers with six huge drill wheels and Christmas lights. We washed dozens of old house shutters to use as décor, and painted milk cans and ancient window frames to add color. Most of the flowers (including those used in the bouquets) came from my mother’s flowerbeds.

I loved every detail about my wedding, so it’s hard to pick out a favorite—but I really enjoyed putting together the table décor. I used old books from my collection and a bunch that I borrowed from friends to create centerpieces, and found rustic candleholders for each table. I chose fabrics with vintage prints and colors to add a fun element. Joel ordered personalized golf pencils for guests to use to fill out the madlibs he created, and my sisters and I sewed burlap bags to hold coffee beans (favors for the guests).

My favorite part of the wedding is something so completely intangible that it’s hard to describe. There was a feeling in the air that not even the fireworks set off by my youngest brother could explain. It was the feeling of togetherness, of kinship, between our families and friends that made the evening feel fitting, right, and blessed. After so much effort and so many prayers, our wedding day was the welcome culmination of God’s perfect timing.

Idea We Love: The Photo Bus

Photo booths are a crazy popular trend for weddings, and they don’t seem to be going anywhere.  What could be better than a fun memory from your event that guests can take right away?  Instant gratification, and the spontaneous nature of a photo booth are just a few of the things that people love so much about them.  I was working a wedding open house recently and John DePrisco was there with his Photo Bus.  I thought it was such a fun concept, a new take on the photo booth, and the VW van that it travels in is just too cute.  I could just imagine it pulling up to an wedding, and parking right out front as guests line up.  If you’re a Kansas City couple I would definitely look into the Photo Bus from John DePrisco Photography for your event!

Floral Friday: A Bouquet of Sunshine

When you think of the color yellow what’s the first word that pops into your head.  Happy?  Me too, and that’s just what these beautiful flowers make me, super, duper happy (especially with winter fast approaching).  There’s so much to love, the variety of texture, the lovely boutonnieres, the soft grey dusty miller as a counterpoint to the bright yellow.  Plus who doesn’t love a good billy ball now and then, and it doesn’t hurt when the bride and groom look like models!  A huge thanks to Cathy and David Photographers for sharing, and to White Iris Designs for their beautiful flowers.  Happy Friday everyone!

Real Wedding: Jacqueline and Gavin, Desoto, Iowa

Jacqueline and Gavin share a love of the great outdoors.  After spending their very first date on a fishing expedition, they knew right away they had found the perfect catch in one another.  When it came time to plan their wedding, they knew they wanted to capture the very best of the fall in Iowa. They planned every detail – taking extra care to ensure that friends and family all had a role in the festivities.  Their day was exquisitely captured by Kyle Dreher, of Landing Feet First Photography and it’s easy to see these two share a love as pure as the sky is blue.  Thanks to Landing Feet First Photography for sharing these beautiful images and to Jacqueline and Gavin for sharing their day with us!

From the Bride, Jacqueline…

“Gavin and I have always shared the love of the outdoors – our first date was an all night fishing trip under the stars! I made him fall in love with me by outfishing him! We wanted our wedding to be as unique as us, so we started by deciding to get married outside and take advantage of the beautiful Iowa fall weather. Our wedding was filled with things we love; family, friends, fishing, hunting, gardening, and antiques! I loved the tables decorated with antiques, antlers, pheasant feathers and homegrown flowers. To make our guests feel at home, we enjoyed home cooked meal served family style and ate on antique china plates. Our family and friends made their best specialties for dessert! Our head table was a big family table where our families ate together like a Sunday dinner. My bouquet was made by my mom with brooches from family and friends. Gavin’s mom made all the hand-painted signs and my favorite “H” crested banner. My sister made our wedding cake and we used my grandpa’s caketopper from his wedding. We had a lot of fun canning veggies from our garden for guests to take home. I love that every detail of our wedding uniquely represented us – but the help and support from our family and friends made our wedding day as amazing as it was!”

Floral Friday: Succulents and Protea

I should’ve known before I even looked at the vendor list, that the bouquet in this inspiration shoot was created by the ever talented Jackie of Munster Rose (see her Featured Vendor post here).  Jackie is super duper sweet, and her work is, well by floral standards, to die for!  It also doesn’t help that that model is adorable.  I absolutely love, love, love the “brides” necklace, so I had to include a gratuitous shot of it, even thought it’s not flower related.  Thanks to Dette Snaps for the lovely images!
