Real Wedding, Rachael and Brian, Cincinnati, Ohio

Timing is everything, you’ve probably heard that a time or two.  And for Rachael and Brian, the perfect timing brought them together.  After meeting during their first year at the School of Advertising Art (SAA) in Ohio, they didn’t think much of the encounter, but when they began sitting next to each other in class and working on projects together, it became evident that the timing was finally right and that they belonged together.  The couple shares a love of vintage items and family heirlooms, so they planned to incorporate both into their wedding day.  And with the backdrop of a rustic nature center, the woodland theme developed perfectly and was captured by 1326 Studios.  We are so in love with the all the vintage flair featured in today’s post and we love how Racheal and Brian were able to incorporate so many unique and personal family items into their day.  After a seven year courtship, their wedding day was a huge celebration of love, family and of course – perfect timing.   Congratulations to the couple and thanks to 1326 Studios for sharing these images with us.

From the bride, Rachael…

Brian and I both attended the School of Advertising Art (SAA) in Ohio. Our first year we didn’t talk much and we were in relationships with other people. Our second year, we both became single and had several classes together. Seemingly by coincidence, we ended up working on more and more projects together. As we neared graduation, we sat next to each other every day in class and made each other laugh constantly. When Brian was out sick for a few days, I noticed that I really missed him. I even went to the trouble of asking a friend for his number to check on him. Soon, we made plans outside of school. A few months later we were officially dating. I knew I wanted to marry Brian after just three weeks. After almost seven years together it finally happened.

With our wedding being at a nature center a woodland theme was inevitable. We also wanted something with a romantic/vintage vibe. To help pull the two together we used blush pink, robin’s egg blue, ivory, and brown in our color palette and incorporated lace and doilies into our decor. The vases for all our centerpieces were made using old jars, bottles, and cans. Some were wrapped with doilies. Others were made with twigs that were glued around cans and held together with lace ribbon. The invitations for our wedding were designed and made by me. Brian and I are both graphic designers, so we knew we wanted to create something unique and special to send to our guests. Each invite was screen printed and wrapped with a fabric belly band.

We love vintage items and heirlooms. On our wedding day I wore a pink star sapphire ring my dad gave my mom on her 21st birthday and a bracelet my grandmother gave me. I also had a broach my grandmother made pinned to my bouquet. Brian carried his great-great-great grandfathers pocket watch and wore a ruby ring his grandfather wore on his wedding day.

There were so many wonderful parts of the day. Being surrounded by all our closest family and friends was truly a blessing. One of our favorites was right after the ceremony. We took a moment to ourselves to just enjoy each others presence and not be surrounded by people. It was very brief, but wonderful.

One of the funnier moments was when my dad walked me down the isle. We were both so confused by the officiant before heading down. He was motioning us to move to the right a little bit, so we were more centered on the isle. We took his had gesture as “trade places”! We switched back and forth at least 2 times before we figured out what he was telling us. I don’t think anyone really saw us do it, but I was cracking up so they definitely head me laughing.

Real Weddings: Kelli and Jason, Burton, Ohio

As is the case with many of our Middle of the Map couples, Kelli and Jason were originally set up by friends.   However on their first meeting, one could say the timing just wasn’t right, and they went their separate ways.  However, flash forward to one year later, and the two met again, the stars aligned and sparks flew, and as Kelli put it “we’ve been together ever since”.  Kelly and Jason love the outdoors, they’re aspiring farmers, and they’re also big fans of all things DIY and vintage.  It only made sense to create an event that captured all of these elements on a hot July evening.  Everyone pitched in to make it happen, and all the details are a testament to their amazing team of family and friends.  Thank you so much to Kelli for sharing all the details of the day, and to Mary Wyar Photography for the lovely pictures!

from the bride, Kelli…

Our wedding was very DIY, from the homemade strawberry jam that I made as the guest gift, to the table runners, to the bunting hanging in the tent. It was an adventure that all of our friends and family helped make so special but my favorite was that my close friends and family member each baked a pie for our dessert table- many of who had never made a pie before in their life.  Jason and I had a small wedding cake but the pies were so great we never even cut the cake!!  We also offered a special celebration punch at  our cocktail hour called Chatham Artillery Punch- so many hands went into making this rather elaborate drink- and rather strong! Whoa was it good though.
There were several heirlooms included in our day. I had a hanky that my great great grand mother held on her wedding day, as well as my mom and sister. And my mother-in-law gave me a hanky that her great great grand mother made and brought over to America from Bohemia. The ring pillow my nephews carried was knitted by my grandmother and my sister used it in her wedding too. My mother gave me pink champagne glasses from the depression era that she found in a vintage store as a gift she gave us for our engagement that we used all night.
We had our wedding at The Burton Century Village- someplace I grew up going to as a little girl. The view was amazing and it meant so much to us to have the farm as our back drop. We are lovers of nature and the country side so the setting with the century homes and the farm there were just what we wanted!
Our ceremony was our favorite part of our wedding day. We wanted to be sure we did not have any thoughtless traditions, and that it reflected us in every way. Jason built the arbor we stood under as my wedding gift which is now in my garden- he even went to far as to put a branch from the tree that he made my engagement ring box from as part of the arbor. My best friend married us, and we wrote our own vows. His close friend bluegrass band played the music for our ceremony and the wedding so it was all the songs we wanted to hear. I can still close my eyes and see Jason’s face when he said “I do”, with that big happy smile. I will always remember that moment. And then when we were married and the ceremony was over my parents surprised us and had bagpipers playing as we walked down the aisle together! It was such a special day- and I know it is for so many couples but seeing all of our friends and family come together to help us and make the day so special will be what I cherish most.

Real Wedding: Kelsie and Andrew, Mahomet, IL

Today’s Real Wedding features a true collaboration between a bride and her groom.  Kelsie and Andrew knew they wanted a wedding that truly reflected who they are, so they opted to take on several DIY projects together.  They shopped around for objects they loved, spent hours painting signs and found ways to add several personal touches to their day.  They even hosted their reception in the very spot where Andrew proposed – her parents’ backyard!  We love the laid back feel of this event and we especially love the nod to all the people and the places that are important to them.  Photographers Jeremy & Kristin were on-hand to perfectly capture the couple’s story and highlight everything that made this wedding so personal and oh-so-fun!

From the bride, Kelsie…

Andrew and I attended Millikin University as music majors together, and it wasn’t until the end of our Junior year that we took notice of each other and began talking. Throughout our relationship Andrew would show up at my door with sunflowers often (because he knew it was my favorite flower), and we would trot off together having the best of times biking on trails, walking around nearby parks and cities, or just laying on the beach by the local lake. Needless to say much of our time falling in love was spent in the beautiful outdoors together and it was perfect! It came as no surprise to me that he choose to propose to me on the hammock in my parents backyard after a walk in their beautiful downtown historic neighborhood. He wrote me the most beautiful acrostic poem that spelled my name, and after reading it asked me to marry him.

When we started planning our wedding we tried to made sure all along that it would be fun and comfortable for all of our guests. We didn’t want to have a stuffy banquet hall, we wanted to have fresh air and a laid back atmosphere. We choose to have our wedding ceremony at the Mabery Gelvin Botanical Gardens in Mahomet Illinois, and it only seemed fitting to have our reception in my parents huge beautiful backyard.  Although I don’t think our wedding had much of a theme, we seemed to stick mostly to the DIY vintage style for most of it. My original plan was to wear my grandmother’s handmade wedding dress from the 1930′s, but I could not stand the thought of cutting and altering it in order to make it fit properly.  I also decided to have different styles and colors for the bridesmaids and our lovely flower girls.

Andrew and I wanted to make sure that people could see “Us” in all of our wedding day, so we decided to put a lot of DIY touches and projects into our day. We spent countless hours together painting signs for our reception, going to all the local thrift stores, and antique stores buying all the hankies, doilies, and various sizes of flower vases we could find.
Our flowers were arranged by Fleur in Bloomington Illinois. They were amazing and were JUST what I imagined for my wedding day. Since Andrew and I have such a history and love of sunflowers, it seemed fitting that they were the main flower of our day.

Special moments of my day were having my grandmother there to present me with her beautiful white gold and tanzanite necklace. It was such a special moment to share with her, and I will never forget it. I also had the privilege of honoring my grandfather who had passed away the week before our wedding. I had a charm placed on my bouquet with his picture on it, and I also presented an orange lilly (his favorite flower) to my mother who placed it on the chair he would have been sitting in. Having our wedding party place hands on us for the closing prayer at our ceremony was definitely a powerful and touching moment from our day.

My favorite moment of the day was walking out and seeing my Andrew waiting for me on the other side of the bridge. I knew that once I was holding his hands I would be his forever, and THAT was the best feeling a girl could ever have.

Real Wedding: Jennie and Jordan, St. Louis, MO

Wow.  And we could end this post with that.  But we’ll go on because there is just so much to say about Jennie and Jordan’s wedding.  The images, from Bound By, give such an up close and personal encounter of the day, it’s almost like we were right there with them!  Every moment beautifully captured and the love Jennie and Jordan have, documented in detail.
We absolutely love the rustic backdrop of the barn paired with the elegance of Jennie’s gorgeous vintage, lace gown.  Plus, her floral halo is simply divine!  Not to mention all the super sweet DIY projects they took on.  Their love is one that took on space and time to fully develop into all the beauty we have to show you today.  Cue the angels, this celebration is heavenly!

Who, What, Where ~ Photographer: Bound By.  Dress & Veil: Vintage family heirlooms.  Bride’s Hairpiece: Whichgoose.  Venue:  Thornhill Mansion at Faust Park.  Catering:  HollyBerry Catering.  Cake: The Cake Lady, Ballwin, MO.  Flowers:  DIY.  Bridesmaids Dresses: Urban Outfitters, Francesca’s Boutique & Free People.  Groom’s boots: Aldo’s

From the Bride, Jennie….

Our story starts with a little bit of breaking the rules, a little bit of a tropical, hemorrhagic fever contracted in South East Asia, a few years of friends, a few months of more than friends, a break up, a reunion, and (duh) a proposal.

Jordan was the staff person sent to pick me up from the airport in Hawaii where I had flown to spend the better part of the year with Youth With A Mission (YWAM), a non-denominational international missions organization. I’ll go ahead and say here that I am not a romantic person. I mean, I’m far too practical and too independent to swoon. But, as long as I live, I’ll never forget the fact that as I walked out of the airport and shook hands with him, now only a stranger, the incurably romantic thought ran across my mind:  You’re going to need to remember this moment.  So, I did.

Jordan was the supporting staff on my missions team, and though dating between students and leaders was a no-no (and though I STILL insist I was not really interested in him romantically then), our relationship grew and not inconspicuously so. I began to notice his attention to me – and so did everyone else.  While in Indonesia together, I began noticing the sweet connection between us, but there was a massive detour when I found myself hospitalized with Dengue Fever. Cue Jennie flying back to the States.

But, undaunted by rules and needless miles between us, Jordan found time and means to manage to be “just passing through” my city when he was back in the States as well. Little by little, we found ourselves as best friends who wanted so many similar things in life. We wanted to travel; we wanted to serve Jesus Christ in missions; we wanted to laugh at ridiculous YouTube videos like the Dramatic Chipmunk.

Taking the advice of his friends that “space is for aliens” (once declared to him by the infamous Brandom Dahm as he shared with friends that I had asked for “time and space”), I flew up to visit him and remove the space between us. It was that trip that I had the thought, “I could marry this boy.”

The thought slightly alarmed me, but I went with it. He made me feel ok with myself and then like someone else entirely – someone more lovely, more valuable – at the same time. It was a little like magic. Fast forward months of dating long distance, he decided last December 30th to propose.

And so, we’re getting hitched this summer.

We’ve seen each other at our worst (me, near-death in hideous pajama pants in a hospital in Indonesia). We’ve traveled the world on crazy adventures. We’ve sat for hours quietly under a tree in a park reading Jane Austen. We’ve laughed ourselves out of stupid fights about nonsense. And I, for one, am ready to walk forward to new and crazy adventures.

Real Wedding: Jacqueline and Gavin, Desoto, Iowa

Jacqueline and Gavin share a love of the great outdoors.  After spending their very first date on a fishing expedition, they knew right away they had found the perfect catch in one another.  When it came time to plan their wedding, they knew they wanted to capture the very best of the fall in Iowa. They planned every detail – taking extra care to ensure that friends and family all had a role in the festivities.  Their day was exquisitely captured by Kyle Dreher, of Landing Feet First Photography and it’s easy to see these two share a love as pure as the sky is blue.  Thanks to Landing Feet First Photography for sharing these beautiful images and to Jacqueline and Gavin for sharing their day with us!

From the Bride, Jacqueline…

“Gavin and I have always shared the love of the outdoors – our first date was an all night fishing trip under the stars! I made him fall in love with me by outfishing him! We wanted our wedding to be as unique as us, so we started by deciding to get married outside and take advantage of the beautiful Iowa fall weather. Our wedding was filled with things we love; family, friends, fishing, hunting, gardening, and antiques! I loved the tables decorated with antiques, antlers, pheasant feathers and homegrown flowers. To make our guests feel at home, we enjoyed home cooked meal served family style and ate on antique china plates. Our family and friends made their best specialties for dessert! Our head table was a big family table where our families ate together like a Sunday dinner. My bouquet was made by my mom with brooches from family and friends. Gavin’s mom made all the hand-painted signs and my favorite “H” crested banner. My sister made our wedding cake and we used my grandpa’s caketopper from his wedding. We had a lot of fun canning veggies from our garden for guests to take home. I love that every detail of our wedding uniquely represented us – but the help and support from our family and friends made our wedding day as amazing as it was!”
