Featured Vendor: emmy-ray

I’ve started this post several different times, and have never actually finished it.  Reason being that I’m not the best at promoting myself.  However I am not just the writer of Middle of the Map Weddings, I’m also a wedding vendor myself.  So for today’s featured vendor post, here’s a little more about me and my business, emmy-ray.

Where to find me: website, blog, Facebook, Twitter

I live in Kansas City, along with my husband and my three pups, Hazel, Ollie, and Flynn, in an old Brookside house where my husband actually grew up.  We bought the house from his parents, and have spent the last 3 years doing projects, and updating it to make it our own.  I do my jewelry and floral design work both from a home based studio.

I received my degree in fine arts with an emphasis in printmaking and metalsmithing.  It was never a question in my mind whether or not I would do something creative as a career, it was a just a matter of figuring out what that would be exactly.  I started emmy-ray in 2007, metalsmithing and making my own jewelry on the side, while I worked full time making a local artists designs.  I continued making and selling my work at local shows, and on Etsy, and also did a brief (and wonderful) stint for two years as an art teacher for elementary school students.

I’ve always had a love for flowers.  Nature and floral motifs ran throughout my 2-D, and jewelry designs.  My first experience doing arranging for a wedding was my own in 2008 (above is my bouquet along with a brooch that belonged to my grandmother).  It was stressful, but completely worth it, because it set me on the path of exploring and learning more about floral design.  I began getting referrals from friends who had been at my wedding, and three years later I am so happy to say that I’m able to do it full time.

Our business is indie through and through.  We are a two person operation, it’s me and my mom, who is my assistant and right hand designer.  We both love flowers, and every time we go to the wholesaler to get them for an event, it’s like Christmas morning.  We do weddings of all shapes and sizes, from small backyard events, to big hotel ballrooms with 400 guests.  I’m truly passionate about weddings, and staying current with what’s happening in the industry, which is one of the reasons I decided to start Middle of the Map.

Along with flowers and jewelry, I’ve also recently added  menswear to my repetoire, creating hand sewn bow ties, and also cuff links, including custom orders for weddings.  Although doing floral design has become the bulk of my business, I’ll never lose my love for creating jewelry designs, sewing, and crafting.  It’s great to be able to offer multiple services to a couple getting married including jewelry for the bride and bridesmaids, ties for the men, and flowers for the event!

I always ask featured vendors to give words of advice to couples planning their weddings.  Although by the wedding industries standards my business is still young, if there’s one thing I could say it’s trust your vendors.  Do the research, and pick someone whose style is compatible with your own, and whose work you love.  Although you may have a budget, don’t work with a designer you’re not comfortable with just to save a few dollars.  There are so many wedding vendors out there, you’ll be able to find someone who’s a perfect fit, and who’ll be excited about making your vision for your day come to life!

Featured Vendor: RPM Photography

Before I started Middle of the Map I had definitely heard of RPM Photography, and seen Rachel’s beautiful work.  I think the thing that’s most striking about her images is that they’re so natural.  Her subjects are comfortable with her shooting them, and she doesn’t use lots of fancy filters or editing to her work.  It’s just pure, and simple moments that she captures with her lense which really tells a narrative about the subject she’s shooting.  Here’s more about Rachel and her business RPM:

Where to find her: websiteblogFacebook

Where do you live, work, and play?

I live in Overland Park with my husband David and our three kids – Erin, Andrew and Emily.  I work all over Kansas City.

Have you always been interested in photography?  What sparked your interest?

I always liked photography from the viewer’s prospective but never thought when I was younger that I could do it myself.  I’ve always loved history and viewing old photographs and so that was my first connection to photography.  I love the way that a photography can say so much about a moment:  it can tell you time, place, relationships, emotions, circumstance all from one second of time.  I strive in my work to provide that “glimpse of a moment in time”.  I love to capture my clients as they actually are – pulling their personalities out and providing images that show their emotions, connections and how they interact with one another.

When did you decided to start your business, RPM Photography?

I didn’t!  My husband actually started in the wedding industry before I joined up with him, but he started in video as he has a film background.  After our first daughter was born I knew that like him, I wanted the opportunity to work from home to be able to spend more time with her. By then I had assisted him for a couple of years so I had a pretty strong understanding of Kansas City Weddings.  We decided to start shooting still photography and were surprised when that took off and surpassed our video bookings.

What’s your favorite subject to shoot in your spare time?

I love shooting my kids when they don’t know it!  Of course if they know I’m trying to shoot them they don’t cooperate, but when I’m able to snap those little moments that I know I’ll want to remember years from now – that’s what I like to see on my walls.

I also love shooting engagement sessions.  That’s really my chance to get to know my couples and help develop a portfolio for them that reflects their personal style.

If you could offer some words of advice to couple trying to pic a photographer and plan their weddings what would they be?
My advice first and foremost is pick someone you click with on all fronts.  First ask yourself: do I get a long with this person?  Do I want to spend one of the most memorable days of my life with this person?  Second, ask yourself  ”do I love their style?”  Then ask, will I be as in love with these photos 20 years from now as I will the first day I see them?  Really be honest with yourself when picking any of your vendors – go with your gut instinct.  Photography is an expensive piece of the wedding puzzle but you have to look at it an investment.  You’re spending a lot of money on this once in a lifetime event – the photos and video are the piece that you hold on to forever.

Featured Vendor: Gerber and Scarpelli Photography

If there’s one thing that I love at Mid Map it’s the spirit of collaboration that comes from working on weddings.  The team at Gerber + Scarpelli photography has totally embraced this idea.  Their business is the collaborative work of a whole group of like minded photojournalists, whose goal is to capture every aspect of a couples wedding, from spontaneous and meaningful moments, to all the little details that make a couples event special.

Where to find them: website, blog, Facebook, Yelp! (psst, check out their Yelp page for a special promotion!)

Gerber and Scarpelli Photography

The Gerber + Scarpelli team all live and work in Chicago.  They have six photographers that they keep in the studio all the time.  As Melody, the groups liason for this post describes it, they were all interested in the medium of photography from the very beginning, “practically emerging from the womb with camera in hand”.  They all started with film photography and then eventually crossed over into the digital realm.

Their inspiration for shooting weddings comes from documenting all the nuances; the intimate details, significant moments, or spontaneous ones, such as the glance between a bride and groom.  It’s all about being organic and capturing what’s happening in order to tell the story of their clients wedding days.

Their business Gerber + Scarpelli was founded in 1999, and in recent years also branched out into a new venture Orange2Photo.  G+S caters to very high end, elegant, luxury clients, creating all the albums, and prints for their couples.   But the group soon realized they were missing out on a whole group of great couples.  That’s where Orange2Photo was created.  It caters to couples who still want great pictures, but may not need all the bells and whistles that G+S offers.  It allows couples to take their own digital files and create albums, prints, etc.  With both companies, they get to cover all the bases and provide amazing images to all kinds of clients, no matter what the budget.

Their favorite subject to photograph other than weddings?  Melody says probably travel photos.  In the past couple of years the gang has been to New Orleans, Belize, Guatemala, Italy, Mexico, Prague, Budapest, Norway, and Cuba.  Phew, that’s a lot of traveling!

Their group comes from a diverse background, including fashion, editorial, fine art, etc.  They’ve shot for Rolling Stone, Travel and Leisure, People, and many more.  Melody says wedding photography has been a great transition.  It allows them to do the photojournalism they love, while developing great relationships with their clients, which is also their favorite part of being in the industry:  “Being able to be with a couple during their wedding and also being around for the other big moments in their lives.  It’s so rewarding to us because our photographs will be shown again and again across  generations, bringing happiness to those that see them.”

Words of advice for couples choosing their wedding photographers: “Make sure to pick a photographer that you really blend with.  Feeling comfortable with your photographer is key.  Having personalities that mesh well will lead to more natural and organic photos.”

A big thank you to Gerber + Scarpelli for taking the time to answer all my questions and share their beautiful work.  Also be sure to check out their Yelp! page for a special promotion happening through June 1st.
