Real Weddings: Erin and Curtis, Kansas City, Missouri

Erin and Curtis are both part of the architecture community in Kansas City.  It’s easy to see their love of clean, modern design throughout their wedding from the invitations, to the flowers, and the event space they chose.  Curtis even proposed to Erin with a ring designed by one of her favorite architects, Frank Gehry.  Erin says she chose the fresh green color palette because it’s one of her favorite colors, and since it was a spring wedding she thought it’d be perfect.  A big thank you to Erin and Curtis for sharing all the details of their big day, and to Rachel of RPM photography for all her lovely, and incredibly detailed images.

From the bride…

In March of 2010 we planned a trip to Colorado for the summer.  Curtis, Max (our black lab) & I drove to Colorado for the his cousin’s wedding and afterwards traveled all over the state. We visited friends in Boulder, stayed in a cabin for a few days, did some hiking, and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. Near the end of the trip we went to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, a place Curtis visited as a child. We each took a photo of the other and when we got together for a picture Curtis got down on one knee. I was completely surprised and the moment was perfect. After trying to fly a kite on the Dunes we headed to Colorado Springs were we had a special celebration dinner and spent the night at a bed & breakfast. It was clearly our most memorable vacation.  We took a bottle of sand from the Dunes and used it in our sand ceremony which was part of the wedding ceremony.

Anything involving paper was DIY.  I bought all of the supplies at Paper Source and also went to a class to learn the basics. I created a monogram from my engagement ring and used it on most paper items. Also, my Mom bought handkerchiefs for both of us and embroidered our names & wedding date.

I LOVE ice cream so we had Cold Stone at the wedding to serve ice cream instead of cake. We got a small cake just to cut and it was a simple design and cut to match my wedding ring.

I wore my Mom’s diamond studs as my something borrowed. We also did an “anniversary dance” where all couples come to the dance floor. Then couples who have been married 5 yrs or less are asked to leave the dance floor, 10 yrs, 20 yrs, etc. The remaining couple was my grandparents who have been married 64 yrs!

We did quite a few pictures at the Nelson Atkins Art Museum and the Bloch building addition. The architect, Steven Holl, is one of our favorites and we love the new building so that was a no brainer. We also did some pics on the plaza – where I lived for a few years after graduation.

I will always remember our first look and how excited he was to see me in my wedding gown. I also LOVE dancing and spent much of the night on the dance floor with friends, family, and my husband.

Real Weddings: Jenna and Brock, International Falls, Minnesota

People often dread it raining on their wedding day.  It might ruin the brides dress, or hair, it limits the picture you can take outdoors, and if you’re having an outdoor ceremony or reception, forget it!  However Brock and Jenna definitely didn’t let the spring showers put a damper on their day.  The vibrant and beautiful color palette of teals, apple greens, and white, make for such wonderful photos.  Jenna said that every detail of their day was thoughtfully chosen because “It simply felt right and fit our fun, not so serious style”, and the whole town pitched in to help make their wedding day beautiful, just read her description below.  A big thank you to Brock and Jenna for sharing all the details of your day and to Heidi Lynn Photography for her lovely images.

From the Bride…

Growing up in a small town of only 6,000 people you pretty much know everyone, or at least who everyone is. That being said, I had never had an encounter or even a conversation with Brock until the fall of 2006 when I moved back to International Falls to attend community college.  Through many jokes, classes, work hours, and coincidentally being paired up as science lab partners, we got to know each other and become good friends. In the spring of 2007 Brock asked me to be his girlfriend, and we’ve been happily together ever since.

The proposal was so “us” that everyone still laughs about it. A simple promise to take me out to breakfast before church, turned into a picnic breakfast of muffins, fruit snacks and orange juice out on our local Lake. As we were leaving to head back to the car, Brock bent over claiming he had a rock in his shoe, and pulled out a ring. I was ecstatic, of course I said “yes” and so the wedding planning began!

Before we were officially engaged I had a clear picture in my head of what I wanted the day to look like in terms of colors, theme, etc. but as we started planning I realized that wasn’t really our style and so those plans went out the window. A small clipping of a green pair of shoes and a teal dress from a random Google image search started the look of our wedding.  The flowers were chosen to incorporate a combination of (in the words of my florist friend) “romantic, fluffy Minnesota-grown peonies, and a splash of modern, fresh bright green hypericum.”  Brock is big into skateboarding so he wore cuff links that I found made from recycled skateboards, and opted for skate shoes instead of dress shoes.

Small town weddings mean that a lot of things need to be done DIY style due to limited resources.  For our wedding, almost everything was a DIY project and people all over town offered to pitch in and help out.  A good friend of my mom’s planned and created the meal for over 300 guests – a full Thanksgiving style turkey dinner  – and turkeys were passed out all over town to be cooked.  The granny-smith apple and curly willow centerpieces were chosen by me, but put together by my mom and one of her best friends.  The flowers were planned and assembled by one of my good friends Rachel, who was also on bridesmaid duty and runs a small at-home floral business in Rochester, MN. The table runners were made from clearance fabric found at Walmart and cut and sewn by family friends. Our wedding favors consisted of personalized pencils, and homemade crossword puzzles full of fun facts and details about Brock and I that we created on my computer. In front of our seats at the reception we had homemade chalkboard signs, which matched our cake toppers that I actually created from scrap wood and chalkboard paint for our engagement session with a local photographer last fall. One of the highlights of the dance was a large wedding caricature face cutout that a family friend of ours made as a wedding gift. Either my mom and I, or family friends put the entire day together; it was essentially the definition of a small town wedding.

I know it sound generic, but my favorite part of my wedding day was walking down the aisle and marrying my best friend. It was so neat being surrounded by people we love, and we loved getting to celebrate with everyone who helped put the day together. It was the perfect start to our married lives and so much fun.

Engagement Session: Jena and Ted

Today’s e-session is so cute, and it’s clear to see from the pictures that Jena and Ted are totally glowing.  I love that they took a coffee break at Starbucks (one of my husband and I’s favorite spots as well), and the shots in front of the beautiful blooming spring trees are really beautiful.  Thanks to Portraits by Lucinda for the beautiful images.

Real Weddings: Iliana and Steve, Chicago, IL

Today’s wedding is DIY from start to finish.  As Iliana said her and her husband Steve’s family “love to eat and have fun!” so that was definitely the focus of their day.  Rather than sticking to one color palette, they chose a bright mix to go along with the season they got married in, spring.  Iliana created all the decor for the reception herself, including the fun floral arrangements (which I didn’t even notice were silk flowers at first).  To keep costs down she also created her own photo booth on her computer, and had lots of props for party goers to use in their pics. They allowed their guests to get creative with a blank canvas and an art station.  Everyone was encouraged to add to the canvas throughout the night to create a wonderful one of a kind piece for Iliana and Steve to remember their wedding day.  A big thank you to the bride and groom for sharing all the details of their day, and to Justine Bursoni for her lovely images.

From the Bride…

I know exactly where to begin. I met Steve at the high school he taught at. I needed to complete some observation hours for my teaching certification.  The funny thing is, his last name (Rzodkiewicz) made me think he might be an old man. He came out into the hallway to talk to me about his classroom, wearing his Chicago Cubs jersey, and I instantly knew there was a connection.

He meets my twin daughters and it is made very clear that this guy is a keeper. We date, go to concerts, make a band together, and decide that we are totally in love. “Let’s get married…” Steve says to me at a stoplight in Lincoln Square. We bought a six-pack and celebrated at Opart Thai Restaurant.

Now came time to planning the wedding. We were looking to buy a home first, so our budget was super limited. We both agreed that if we were to have a wedding, we need to make it as painless and stress-free as possible.

Thanks to Martha Stewart Weddings, Etsy.com and The Knot, I was able to put together a clear picture of what I wanted the wedding reception to look like, how to make the items and how to save a bunch of money.

My favorite moment of the wedding was our first dance. We only practiced it once, and felt super silly doing it, but we had fun. We danced to the song “I love you”, by Same Cooke. It’s now my ring tone for when my husband calls me.

Saturday Matinee: Kari and TJ

Sometimes I think it’s weird that I love watching wedding videos as much as I do. However I think that as someone who works in the industry I’m always being inspired by what’s out there, and there’s just something about all the details of the day that a video can convey, and sometimes still photos can’t. It doesn’t hurt when the short films are like a little mini movie, and Kari and TJ’s wedding was a really beautiful one to boot (the flowers are amazing, and that dress!). Thanks so much to Matt from MTVIDYO for this lovely submission!
