Love is Sweet: Bake Sale Dessert Buffet

I’m so excited to be kicking off a brand new feature on Middle of the Map called “Love is Sweet”.  The inspiration for this new feature came to me when the talented Erin Johnson submitted an inspiration shoot that featured seven (yes seven) different dessert buffets.  With so many amazing events now sharing candy and dessert bars that are as tasty as they are lovely it seemed like a perfect fit for MOTM.  Today I’m kicking things off with the bake sale inspired buffet created by Erin Johnson Photography in collaboration with Sarah of On Solid Ground Vintage Rentals.  These ladies styled each buffet with care, and created lots of hand made elements, such as the banners, and picks for this particular shoot.  Erin says she loved having the vintage aprons hanging in the background, and Sarah added her own antique scales and milk jugs.  Great work ladies, can’t wait to share the rest in the months to come!

Location: Spill the Wine.  Desserts: Sweets Bakeshop.

Do you have a wedding with a beautiful cake, or a dessert or candy buffet you think should be featured on Middle of the Map?  I’m NOW taking submissions for future “Love is Sweet” features, so send them my way!

DIY Project: Herb Hostess Gift

I’m super excited today to share a brand new contributor to Middle of the Map Weddings.  I met Laura last summer when we brainstormed with Ashley about doing a shoot together.  She’s a super talented gal, and has her own blog A Girl Who Makes, where she shares all kinds of DIY projects.  It’s definitely one to add to your reading list.  Find out more about Laura in our Contributor section, and here’s her first project for Middle of the Map Weddings.

Hello! A huge thank you to Emily for having me today. I am excited to share with you a simple, yet clever DIY idea that can be used as a hostess gift, bridesmaids gift or wedding favor. This potted herb gift is versatile and very easy to put together.

Materials needed: potting soil, 8” ribbon or yarn, small pair of scissors, coffee mug (the one shown is from anthropologie), an herb (the one shown is chive).

Step 1:  Place about 1” of potting soil into the bottom of your mug.

Step Two: Plant the herb into the mug and fill the remaining space in the mug with potting soil. Gently press the soil into the mug to secure the herb. You want the herb to have a snug fit.

Step Three: Trim the herb plant to your desired length and shape. In this case, the chive was a bit long, which made it bend, so I decided to trim it to about 12” so it would stand up straight.

Step 4: Using the ribbon, tie a pair of small scissors to the handle of the mug.

There you have it! A planted herb in a mug. These could be given as shown, or loosely tied up in cellophane for easier transport.

DIY Projects: Stained Glass Bottles

It’s time for our monthly DIY contributor post from the lovely Ashley Harms of the creative design blog A+Joy.  This months project is so fun and simple, it’ll have you saying, duh, why didn’t I think of that!  Plus it’s perfect for both weddings, and can translate to any other type of fun summer event.  Imagine multiple bottles on a table with flowers in them.  So fun!

My daughter brings home the most amazing pieces of art from preschool. A lot of times they spark a memory from my childhood of creating the same piece. Around Easter she brought home a cross that looked like stained glass. I remembered doing the same thing and loving the look, especially in the light. I decided to try the technique as interesting table numbers for an event and was thrilled with the result. Which led to my latest DIY project.

What you will need:

1. glass bottles ( size depends on your needs )
2. Modge Podge ( waterbase sealer, glue and finish )
3. tissue paper ( cut into small pieces of various sizes and shapes )
4. computer paper with printed number
5. utility knife
6. ruler
7. double sided tape ( not pictured )
8. paint brush ( not pictured )

Step One: Print out the numbers. You can fit two numbers on each piece of standard 8.5” x 11” paper. Cut out numbers with the utility knife and ruler.

Step Two: Flip the label to the reverse side. Brush Modge Podge around the edge of the number. Add tissue paper pieces. Make sure to overlap the pieces for a more stained glass look.

Step Three: Turn over and make sure there are no holes or gaps. Let dry.

Step Four: Attach to bottle using double sided tape.

Step Five: Find a sunny spot and see how beautiful the stained glass effect looks at your table setting.

I think these would be lovely for a shower or luncheon. Initials or an iconic shape, such as a heart, would be super cute to try as well.

In the Details: A Sweet + Citrusy Shower Favor

Todays post is from another one of Middle of the Maps talented contributors.  I’ve been reading Ashley’s blog a+joy for awhile now, and she does adorable DIY projects, home decor, and style posts.  However she has begun steering her blog more toward DIY projects for parties, table scapes, and event styling.  Obviously all of these things go hand in hand with weddings, and she became the DIY guru for Middle of the Map.  For her very first project today she’s created some adorable shower favors that anyone could make, so here’s Ashley:

All winter my family has been eating up oranges and Cuties. The citrus peeler has become a kitchen tool we use daily. I started thinking about what a wonderful and non budget-shattering gift a citrus peeler would make for guests at parties, showers, or weddings.  Then this simple little favor idea came to me as I thought of a cute couple I know getting married in less than a week. They truly are a “couple of cuties.”

Little Cutie's wedding favor supplies.

What you will need:

  1. some pretty ribbon
  2. two Cuties per favor
  3. a citrus peeler (the one shown is from Crate and Barrel)
  4. a custom label with clever wording and a wrap around label to add to the bottom of the box as an extra design element to jazz it up a bit (made and designed by me)
  5. a gable box (the one shown is from xpedx)
  6. some paper shred packaging

Little Cuties, hand made wedding favors.

Step One: Drill a hole in the citrus peeler.  The hole will allow you to tie it to the box in a very pretty way.  I was a bit worried about drilling the hole and if there would be any complications, but the drilling was extremely easy to do.

Step Two: Put the box together.  Fill with paper shred and add the Cuties.  Close up the box.

Step Three: Thread the pretty ribbon through the citrus peeler and label.  Tie securely to the box.  Also add the wrap around label with double stick tape to the bottom of the box.

Step Four: Repeat steps one through three until all your favors are complete!
