Real Wedding: Michelle and Nick, St. Paul, MN

I can already tell that today’s Real Bride, Michelle, and I would be great friends.  I absolutely love that it rained on her wedding day – and although that might seem strange to say – it’s okay because she absolutely loved it too!  There is something so cleansing and beautiful about the rain, and when you can have this much fun with it – especially on your wedding day – beautiful photographic memories are sure to follow!  For Michelle and Nick, their day was about incorporating friends, family and the three adorable pooches who were responsible for bringing them together.  With images by Cadence Cornelius, today’s Real Wedding is so fresh, so fun and so full of life!  Congratulations to the couple and thanks to Cadence Cornelius for sharing this perfectly picturesque day with us!

From the bride, Michelle…

I was single for a long time and decided to buy a home on my own. The first thing I did after closing was I went out and found myself a rescue dog to share my new digs with. I never could imagine loving anything more. We were a perfect match. Little did I know, one year later, this little dog named Weezy would be the reason I would meet my future husband. We met at the dog park. Nick had two white boxers. Casual conversation quickly turned into something more and before we knew it, we were dating. On our one year anniversary Nick proposed in the same exact spot in the dog park where he asked for my phone number. It was a quick six month engagement.

We married on a rainy spring day at Irvine Park in St. Paul which is near our home. Nick had his brother and I had my best friend stand up at the ceremony with our dogs (of course!). Instead of having official bridesmaids, I had all of my favorite girls (2 sisters and 4 best friends) wear blue so I could include them in our photos. As a bit of foreshadowing, I bought different colored rain boots as bridesmaids gifts months before the wedding. It turned out they all needed them that day! The reception was down in the cozy 413 on Wacouta in Lowertown St. Paul. We had a delicious Cossetta’s (classic St. Paul Italian) dinner by candlelight and then danced the night away.

Surprisingly, my favorite part of the day was the rain. I remember thinking, “I have never been to a wedding where it rained like this!” As I looked around at everyone gathered under colorful umbrellas, it looked and felt so beautiful and romantic. And it was.

Real Wedding: Lindsey and Jason, Chicago, Illinois

When you look at Lindsay and Jason’s wedding you can tell right away that it was such a fun event.  Everyone is all smiles, and the bright and cheery color palette of red and aqua compliment the vintage theme of their day.  One detail that obviously stands out is the clothes, make-up, and hair of the entire wedding party.  Lindsay made sure everyone looked retro perfect, and I love her outfit change from a flouncy short dress, to a more traditional lace gown for the ceremony.  My very favorite details of the event?  The amazing vintage car that perfectly fits their colors, and the sweet bouquets made up of red flowers and vintage aqua brooches, so cute!  A big thank you to Lindsay for sharing all the details of the day, and to Joan of Five Grain Events for submitting this lovely wedding.

Even more loveliness…

From the bride, Lindsey…

Jason and I met in 2008. I lived near a bar where he worked as a bartender. I went in one night and noticed the handsome server, but never thought anything of it. Months later, on a whim, I decided to stop in again to see if he happened to be working. Turns out it was the only night that week he was there! We chatted for a few hours and I mustered the courage to give him my number. That was a Monday. By Friday I had not heard from him and kind of gave up on the idea. I was out with friends when he texted me and I became very excited. A few months after dating, Jason got a job in Denver and he moved. We were both very sad and missed each other so much that within four weeks, he was back in Chicago and moving in with me! Three years later, we got engaged after a wonderful dinner at Bistro Campagne and a walk through Millennium Park. We both later laughed about his cheesy line, “I’d like to spend the next Millennium with you, will you marry me?”

Our wedding scheme colors took some thinking- Jason is a visual artist and I am a costume designer, so we knew we wanted something bright and bold but not too tacky. His art work uses a lot of circus and tattoo themes, so when the idea of turquoise/teal and red came up, we knew we loved it.

Our DIY projects included making the hanging art of the red and turquoise paper cranes- it was really a family affair with my mom purchasing them online and my aunt, uncle and Jason building it in the kitchen the day before the wedding. At my bridal shower, one of our four year old flower girls drew a picture of Jason and me under a rainbow and on the back side it said, “Happy Wedding Day!” I immediately knew that would be the cover and inside leaf of our programs. Being a costume designer, I wanted to incorporate vintage flower brooches into my bouquets, but I still wanted real flowers, so I came up with the idea to mix the two. Jason and I made an afternoon of wiring all of the brooches I purchased on eBay and at a local vintage store in order to save some money.

I used my mother’s white childhood Bible as the base of my bouquet and had our florist build a floral arrangement mixed with brooches on top. My mom took photos of our beloved past relatives (including my first dog!) and miniaturized them and put them in tiny little frames. Then she used ivory ribbon and attached them to the bible so that they hung. No one would know what they were unless they were very close, but it was very special for me to carry them on my day. I have a huge stock of buttons, so we sprinkled them around the center pieces (vintage blue Mason jars filled with dahlias, cocks comb, and zinnias).  I loved our aisle runner, I bought red and turquoise printed fabric on sale at JoAnns and hemmed all of the raw edges. I wore a pair of vintage earrings in my hair as accessories.  They worked great!

We also held an after reception party at the bar where Jason and I met. It was great because most of the employees and the owners were at the wedding, so we all headed over and had a great time at the after party.

Real Weddings: Jenna and Brock, International Falls, Minnesota

People often dread it raining on their wedding day.  It might ruin the brides dress, or hair, it limits the picture you can take outdoors, and if you’re having an outdoor ceremony or reception, forget it!  However Brock and Jenna definitely didn’t let the spring showers put a damper on their day.  The vibrant and beautiful color palette of teals, apple greens, and white, make for such wonderful photos.  Jenna said that every detail of their day was thoughtfully chosen because “It simply felt right and fit our fun, not so serious style”, and the whole town pitched in to help make their wedding day beautiful, just read her description below.  A big thank you to Brock and Jenna for sharing all the details of your day and to Heidi Lynn Photography for her lovely images.

From the Bride…

Growing up in a small town of only 6,000 people you pretty much know everyone, or at least who everyone is. That being said, I had never had an encounter or even a conversation with Brock until the fall of 2006 when I moved back to International Falls to attend community college.  Through many jokes, classes, work hours, and coincidentally being paired up as science lab partners, we got to know each other and become good friends. In the spring of 2007 Brock asked me to be his girlfriend, and we’ve been happily together ever since.

The proposal was so “us” that everyone still laughs about it. A simple promise to take me out to breakfast before church, turned into a picnic breakfast of muffins, fruit snacks and orange juice out on our local Lake. As we were leaving to head back to the car, Brock bent over claiming he had a rock in his shoe, and pulled out a ring. I was ecstatic, of course I said “yes” and so the wedding planning began!

Before we were officially engaged I had a clear picture in my head of what I wanted the day to look like in terms of colors, theme, etc. but as we started planning I realized that wasn’t really our style and so those plans went out the window. A small clipping of a green pair of shoes and a teal dress from a random Google image search started the look of our wedding.  The flowers were chosen to incorporate a combination of (in the words of my florist friend) “romantic, fluffy Minnesota-grown peonies, and a splash of modern, fresh bright green hypericum.”  Brock is big into skateboarding so he wore cuff links that I found made from recycled skateboards, and opted for skate shoes instead of dress shoes.

Small town weddings mean that a lot of things need to be done DIY style due to limited resources.  For our wedding, almost everything was a DIY project and people all over town offered to pitch in and help out.  A good friend of my mom’s planned and created the meal for over 300 guests – a full Thanksgiving style turkey dinner  – and turkeys were passed out all over town to be cooked.  The granny-smith apple and curly willow centerpieces were chosen by me, but put together by my mom and one of her best friends.  The flowers were planned and assembled by one of my good friends Rachel, who was also on bridesmaid duty and runs a small at-home floral business in Rochester, MN. The table runners were made from clearance fabric found at Walmart and cut and sewn by family friends. Our wedding favors consisted of personalized pencils, and homemade crossword puzzles full of fun facts and details about Brock and I that we created on my computer. In front of our seats at the reception we had homemade chalkboard signs, which matched our cake toppers that I actually created from scrap wood and chalkboard paint for our engagement session with a local photographer last fall. One of the highlights of the dance was a large wedding caricature face cutout that a family friend of ours made as a wedding gift. Either my mom and I, or family friends put the entire day together; it was essentially the definition of a small town wedding.

I know it sound generic, but my favorite part of my wedding day was walking down the aisle and marrying my best friend. It was so neat being surrounded by people we love, and we loved getting to celebrate with everyone who helped put the day together. It was the perfect start to our married lives and so much fun.

Midwest Engagement Session: Elyse and Andy

Today’s adorable engagement shoot comes from New Harmony, Indiana.  Elyse and Andy were a fun laid back couple according to their photographer Jesse Daniels.  Even with the “iffy” weather, the two got some amazing shots, strolling through the charming downtown, with their umbrella in hand.

Engagement Session: Annie and TJ

Hawes Photography shot one of the very first weddings I ever did flowers for.  Ever since I’ve been a big fan of their photo work.  They made a recent move to St.Louis and opened up a brand new studio.  However they still have some amazing Kansas City engagement sessions they sent my way, one being this one with Annie and TJ.  They really took full advantage of their locations, and their reaction to the rainstorm at the end of the day is so fun and unexpected.

Congrats to Annie and TJ, and thanks to Heather and Aaron for sharing!  See more from this engagement at Hawes Photography Blog.
