Real Weddings: Kelli and Jason, Burton, Ohio

As is the case with many of our Middle of the Map couples, Kelli and Jason were originally set up by friends.   However on their first meeting, one could say the timing just wasn’t right, and they went their separate ways.  However, flash forward to one year later, and the two met again, the stars aligned and sparks flew, and as Kelli put it “we’ve been together ever since”.  Kelly and Jason love the outdoors, they’re aspiring farmers, and they’re also big fans of all things DIY and vintage.  It only made sense to create an event that captured all of these elements on a hot July evening.  Everyone pitched in to make it happen, and all the details are a testament to their amazing team of family and friends.  Thank you so much to Kelli for sharing all the details of the day, and to Mary Wyar Photography for the lovely pictures!

from the bride, Kelli…

Our wedding was very DIY, from the homemade strawberry jam that I made as the guest gift, to the table runners, to the bunting hanging in the tent. It was an adventure that all of our friends and family helped make so special but my favorite was that my close friends and family member each baked a pie for our dessert table- many of who had never made a pie before in their life.  Jason and I had a small wedding cake but the pies were so great we never even cut the cake!!  We also offered a special celebration punch at  our cocktail hour called Chatham Artillery Punch- so many hands went into making this rather elaborate drink- and rather strong! Whoa was it good though.
There were several heirlooms included in our day. I had a hanky that my great great grand mother held on her wedding day, as well as my mom and sister. And my mother-in-law gave me a hanky that her great great grand mother made and brought over to America from Bohemia. The ring pillow my nephews carried was knitted by my grandmother and my sister used it in her wedding too. My mother gave me pink champagne glasses from the depression era that she found in a vintage store as a gift she gave us for our engagement that we used all night.
We had our wedding at The Burton Century Village- someplace I grew up going to as a little girl. The view was amazing and it meant so much to us to have the farm as our back drop. We are lovers of nature and the country side so the setting with the century homes and the farm there were just what we wanted!
Our ceremony was our favorite part of our wedding day. We wanted to be sure we did not have any thoughtless traditions, and that it reflected us in every way. Jason built the arbor we stood under as my wedding gift which is now in my garden- he even went to far as to put a branch from the tree that he made my engagement ring box from as part of the arbor. My best friend married us, and we wrote our own vows. His close friend bluegrass band played the music for our ceremony and the wedding so it was all the songs we wanted to hear. I can still close my eyes and see Jason’s face when he said “I do”, with that big happy smile. I will always remember that moment. And then when we were married and the ceremony was over my parents surprised us and had bagpipers playing as we walked down the aisle together! It was such a special day- and I know it is for so many couples but seeing all of our friends and family come together to help us and make the day so special will be what I cherish most.

Saturday Matinee: Kristin and Ford’s Kansas Wedding

For me there’s nothing like a video to really capture the essence of a wedding day.  It’s one thing to have a beautiful photo, but a film captures everything, the smiles, the tears, and all the emotions in between.  I absolutely love the idea of the couple creating video messages for each other to view on the morning of their wedding.  I also love that Kristin and Ford got married in her parents backyard, such a sweet and personal ceremony.  Here’s a little bit from Matt of MTVIDYO who shot their event:

It was an amazing day! It was in Stilwell Kansas in the parents beautiful backyard. Crazy things happened throughout the day. There’s a family joke that when you have a wedding outside they always get interrupted by ice cream trucks driving through the neighborhood. So they hired a fleet of ice cream trucks to interrupt the ceremony and deliver ice cream trucks to all the guests. At Starlight Theater while the father of the bride was giving his speech, the KU marching band bursts into the venue to surprise the bride and groom who both went to KU.

Thanks so much for sharing Matt!

Inspiration: Minnesota Farm Wedding

Minnesota Winter Wedding Inspiration

It’s been awhile since we shared an inspiration shoot, and with the weather as chilly as it is here in the midwest, this Minnesota farm wedding hits the mark perfectly.  With lovely images by one of our favorites, Erin Johnson, and a whole bunch of other amazing midwest vendors.  Here’s a little more about the inspiration from the shoot from Erin’s blog:

We are THRILLED to show you this post!  We found inspiration for this shoot in Carly’s Camilla Spode china {inherited from her grandmother}, red dogwood branches in the snow and Amy, Hannah and Nina–these three BEAUTIFUL girls!  {Oh…and Cian! Sorry, Cian!}.   Carly and I called on some of our favorite vendors to join us and this fun, vintage, winter shoot was born.Ashley, from Simply Elegant Bridal Consulting connected us with Seven Oaks Farm in Stillwater, Minnesota and we instantly fell in love.  Pulling onto Seven Oaks Farm is like pulling into Bing Crosby’s movie, Holiday Inn.  It’s picturesque and quaint and the perfect place for a wedding…and Carolyn and Herb, the owners, couldn’t be kinder or more accommodating.  The farm has beautiful, white-washed out-buildings—one of which is Wisconsin-style barn with a huge hay loft {and the site of our shoot}.

We set our scene with lots of lovely goods from On-Solid Ground Vintage RentalsLime Canary Vintage Rentals, and Festivities.   The Simply Elegant Bridal Consulting team and Sarah, from On-Solid Ground, joined us to pull everything together on-site.  It was such a blast to collaborate with these gals!
Local artists, Rachel and Allison Pegoraro created a one-of –a-kind thumbprint guest book. Allison Pegoraro lent a taxidermy faun, antlers and faun skins to bring in a bit of the quirk we’re known for. And, we can’t say enough about Rosann Konieczny Calligraphy! Her work totally elevated the invitations Carly made just for the shoot.

And, we were thrilled to have Chowgirls Killer Catering put out a beautiful and super tasty spread, along with the incredible custom sweets tables from Sweets Bakeshop.

To dress our models, we borrowed estate furs and vintage jewelry from Brides of France and dressed the bride in re-imagined couture gowns made especially for the occasion by JenMar Creations.  Christina, owner of Something Borrowed, came out with her entire inventory of veils and headpieces.  Dani and Angie from Salon Etica killed it with their beautiful hairstyles and I can’t get enough of the coral lips and cheeks {Make-up by Lydia at Salon Rox}.

Real Wedding: Christina and Justin, Wisconsin

With Christmas all wrapped up, our anticipation is building for all the beauty headed our way in the New Year!  And we can’t think of a better way to close out 2012 than with a gorgeous winter wonderland wedding!  The couple, Christina and Justin, have always favored this time of year, so deciding to host their wedding in winter was the perfect way to set the scene for saying “I do”.  With beautiful images by A & A Photography, we can almost feel the chill in the air, but Christina, Justin and their adorable daughter Emma, had their love to keep them warm.
Special thanks to A & A Photography for proving once and for all that it really is a nice day for a winter-white wedding!

Who, What, Where ~ Photography: A&A Photography.  Reception: Red Circle Inn & Bistro.  Florals: Ester.  Cake:  Extra Special Touch.  Favors:  Indulgence Chocolate.  Ceremony Music:  Elegant Gypsies.  DJ: DJ Smoov Music

From the Bride, Christina…

Our story began with our first New Year’s Eve. We started dating shortly after that first Eve, we fell in love. Two years later we had our daughter, Emma. For a few years we just focused on being great parents. Then New Years Eve came again, and just a few minutes before the New Year my husband got on one knee and proposed. Of course I said yes! The wedding planning started the next day.

My husband and I are very busy with work from April – November so the best time to have a wedding for us was winter. With January being so special to us we decided on the date of 1-15-11. The theme was classic / sophisticated winter wedding. My colors were Navy, white, and hints of silver.

We did so many great little projects for the wedding. My mother in law is amazing and had so many great ideas. We did the seating charts and place cards which I think were perfect. The name cards were placed in a little ornament covered in snowflakes (guess could take these home). All our vendors were Wonderful! The day went so smooth.

The only thing missing from my wedding was my Grandmother who had passed away. I wrapped a necklace she always wore around my bouquet along with wearing here pearl bracelet. This was special to have her close to me even though I knew she was watching me that day.

My favorite part of the day would sound like any mother. It was watching Emma (our 4yr old daughter) get ready. I loved seeing her in her little dress and watching her walk down the aisle and run into her daddy’s arms. The most special part was when my husband and I went to light the eternity candle. We had an extra candle there for our daughter and we help her light her candle with ours. The last thing we did to make the wedding our own was during the father daughter dance we asked that all fathers join us with their daughters on the dance floor. This way my husband got a special dance with our daughter. This was truly a magical day for us.

Real Wedding: Chelsea and Kevin, St. Louis, MO

Is there anything more intimate than a backyard wedding?  Surrounded by the people you love and the memories of your youth, we can’t think of a more charming way to begin the next chapter of your life.  For Chelsea, her grandparents’ backyard proved to be the perfect spot to say “I do” to her soulmate, Kevin.  There, under the twinkle lights her mom and dad strung up, surrounded by the flowers their friends spent much of the day arranging, these two loves birds were right at home.

Who, What, Where ~~ Ceremony & Reception: Chelsea’s Grandparents’ Home.

From The Bride, Chelsea…

After the first few months of dating, Kevin and I each knew we had found what we had always been looking for. Our souls had met their match, and so naturally, I became infatuated with wedding planning. We sat down and made a list of what truly mattered to us regarding our wedding day. The list included intimate family, my grandfather as the minister, and holding the wedding on our anniversary, July 2nd.

Following those goals, we decided to have the wedding in my grandparent’s small but lovely backyard where I had played so often as a child.  The French language has importance to us because I speak French fluently and Kevin proposed to me in French (so that even in a crowd of family and friends only I knew the special words he was asking me.) So, we decided to infuse the details with a vintage french flea market feel. The dessert table featured macarons, palmiers and a banner reading “patisserie”. We also included songs from Carla Bruni and Edith Piaf on our post-ceremony playlist.

To keep the wedding budget-friendly, I hand-crafted most of the decor. We hunted through our favorite antique stores for pretty plates and candlesticks. I purchased and cut the burlap table runners, glued together the table numbers, hand painted the wedding signs and hot-glued moss to our initials.

Being from a very closely-knit family also meant that their incorporation was very important to us. While we did not have a traditional processession, my two little sisters walked before me as my flower girls (the youngest held a sign reading “Here Comes the Bride”,) and my father walked me down the aisle, which was one of the most meaningful walks of my life. My grandmother’s cameo brooch decorated my bouquet as my “something old”, and I wore my other grandmother’s pearl necklace as my “something borrowed.” My “something blue” was our initials and wedding date hand-stitched by my grandmother into my dress, and my something new was my wedding gown, which my mother and I found and purchased together, a moment I will always cherish.

What happened on the day of the wedding was simply a blur of love. As soon as the day began friends and family were helping left and right. My parents were stringing twinkle lights through the trees, my grandfather was practicing his sermon, and all of the women were busy making our famous pies for dessert. The day was filled with surprises that I did not know about: beginning with Kevin passing out lyrics to our first dance song so that when we began dancing we were surrounded with a chorus of family singing to us, and ending with my grandfather passing out sparklers to everyone to light as we cut our cake. Where I thought there wouldn’t be room for dancing, my family kicked off their shoes, turned up the music and made that little garden feel like the greatest celebration I had ever attended.

That summer night, under stars and sparklers, the wedding process came to an end. But what Kevin and I knew as the guests began to trickle out and the caterers cleaned up the tables was that while our wedding was only the beginning of our life together, that day showed us what love for family is all about– and we are thrilled to be continuing that tradition of love through our marriage.
