Real Weddings: Debra and Alex, Minneapolis, Minnesota

When I put out a call for winter wedding submissions Maribeth from Red Ribbon Studios was quick to answer, and with good reason.  Debra and Alex’s big day is an incredible one, and they also had a record amount of snow fall on their big day.  When I talked to Debra about her wedding, she said that even though her and Alex decided to get married in December, it was important to them not to have a typical “winter white” wedding.  It may have been cold outside, but they wanted everything inside to feel warm and inviting.  They definitely succeeded, with some amazing bright and beautiful decor choices.  Their winter event is one not to be missed, so take a look!  A big thank you to Debra and Alex for sharing all the details of their day, and to Maribeth of Red Ribbon Studios for her beautiful images!

From the bride…

Alex and I met on a blind date on St. Patrick’s Day in 2009.  You could SAY we met online but it wasn’t exactly the case.  I had kind of had it with online dating but my friend was convinced she could find me someone.  So…she did!  She took over my account (with permission) found Alex, wrote him (as me) a few times and set up our first meeting.  Our first date we walked Lake Calhoun, followed by dinner, and St. Patty’s day beers.  We dated for 11 months before getting engaged.  We had a 9 month engagement and I can tell you truthfully that I loved every minute of it.  I just loved planning our wedding and everything that went with it.  I could go on and on but I won’t!

Our wedding day was obviously memorable in that 22 inches of snow fell in the largest blizzard MN had seen since 1991.  But overall, the wedding was a dream come true.

For the ceremony, the inspiration was fire.  So our ceremony was done with very little light other than candlelight.  All the flowers were ranging from dark orange to light yellow.  It really felt cozy.  As for the party, we wanted to go from warm, to HOT and FUN!  So we chose all hot colors.  Mostly oranges and yellows with a few accents of hot pink.

We decided to add a charitable element to our wedding and in lieu of wedding cake, we stacked canned goods in the shape of a wedding cake and made a donation to the local food shelf.  We didn’t actually build the cake but we did shop (and carry!) all of those cans…hilarious day.

In the ceremony, I used my grandmothers handkerchief to make the marriage contract binding (a jewish tradition where the bride and groom pull on a handkerchief to bind the marriage).  Also, you have to get married with a solid band (no diamonds, etc.) in a Jewish wedding.  Since my actual band has stones in it, we used my grandfathers ring.  We also were wrapped in my grandfathers talis (prayer shawl) during the ceremony as we were blessed.  Lastly, we drank from a kiddush cup from Alex’s family.

We also carried on the family tradition of getting married during a blizzard!  My parents AND grandparents were both married in the midst of historic MN blizzards.

What was your favorite part of your wedding day?

There were a few different ones.  Walking down the aisle and seeing through my veil.  It was like wearing a special lens and I love that fuzzy memory.  Also after the ceremony, Alex and I were wisked away to the hotel and we had dinner just the two of us in our hotel suite.  They set up a table for us that looked just like the tables at the party and we got to try every single thing we were serving while the guests were arriving.  It was the only time that day it was just the two of us.  IT was absolutely fantastic.  My last favorite moment was being lifted in the chair during the hora and seeing everyone looking up at us and realizing how lucky we were to have so many people make it to the wedding despite the trying conditions!

Floral Friday: A Riverboat Wedding

This is Candice and Chris…

When Nikita Gross sent me their riverboat wedding I was super excited.  They were married on the Ohio River in Cincinnati, and I was instantly drawn to their beautiful flowers created by Marti’s Floral Design. The lushness of her bouquet, and the fun textural mix of succulents, dusty miller, billy balls, and scabiosa pods combined with big beautiful blooms is always a winner in my book.  Plus it doesn’t hurt that they’re an adorable couple!

Real Weddings: Yen and Christopher, Wichita, Kansas

Winter is definitely here in the midwest, and so Yen and Christopher’s day is perfect for the chilly weather.  Originally these two were planning a summer wedding, so Yen chose bright warm colors of raspberry, deep orange, purple, and chartreuse.  They ended up having to push things into winter, but Yen loved her color palette and decided to keep it.  She thought it would make a nice contrast to the grey of winter.  One of the most amazing things about this wedding is that Christopher’s own mother sewed all the bridesmaids dresses, vests, and ties.  Talk about a fabulous in-law!  A big thank you to Yen and Christopher for sharing all the details of their big day, and to Jaclyn Marie Photography for the lovely images.

From the bride…

Christopher and I met freshman year at Kansas State University. We were friends up until the summer after our junior year. I went to Houston, TX for an internship, while Christopher was back in Wichita, KS. We called, texted and chatted online every night. At the end of the summer, Christopher offered to fly down to help me pack and drive back to Kansas. And that’s when our friendship turned for the better!

My sister, Anh Phan, and I came up with the centerpieces and put them together with the help of some other family members. We used pinecones and tree branches to tie together the winter wedding to the warm colors originally chose.

We struggled a little with how to handle combining two cultures and traditions during the reception. Following my parents’ culture, each side of both families are introduced to each other at the beginning of the reception. Instead of having a receiving line, we stuck with the Vietnamese tradition of going table to table welcoming each family of guests to the reception and thanking them for sharing the special day with us. As far as the food went, not only did we have Corporate Caterers cook american food, but my aunt, owner of To Chao (a family owned restaurant), cooked some vietnamese food as well. That way, we could incorporate both cultures.

We took some pictures with Christopher’s sister’s Mustang. He works in the automotive industry, and having a picture with car a he’s worked on meant a lot to him.

Our favorite part of the day was the actual wedding itself. I know that most of the planning, stress and money goes into the reception, but our wedding was gorgeous! The music was performed by four of our choir members at St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center. I sang as a soprano in our church choir for 5.5 years. When Christopher converted to Catholicism our 4th year, he joined as a violinist and bass vocalist. We even went to Italy with our choir just last summer. Having members of our choir perform at our wedding meant so much to us.

Real Weddings: Kendal and Eddie, Normal, IL

As the leaves start to change color, and there’s a hint of crispness in the air, Kendal and Eddie’s fall themed wedding is totally appropriate for today’s post.  They were living in Florida for work, but both were raised in the midwest, and missed the change of seasons, especially fall.  They decided to get married in their home state of Illinois, and had a rustic barn wedding that celebrated all things autumn.  Both families, and lots of friends helped Kendal and Eddie do tons of projects for their wedding including almost all the décor, and favors.  Kendal’s mom collected mason jars, twigs, burlap, lanterns, leaves, and more and then everyone got to work.  The girls put together centerpieces while, the guys built wooden crates, and burned table numbers into chopped logs.  Kendal says that all their hard work made their day that much more special and personalized.  Thanks so much to Kendal and Eddie for sharing all the details of their beautiful wedding.

From the bride

Eddie and I began our friendship at the University of Illinois at Chicago almost ten years ago. We endured long distances between us as I moved home to finish nursing school after Eddie graduated. We took turns driving the three hours almost every weekend to see each other. The distance grew to half a country when Eddie took an opportunity with The Walt Disney Company in Florida. The driving turned to flying and the visits continued until I graduated and joined him in Florida. With distance behind us, we endured more of life’s curve balls, including the sudden loss of my beloved father and grandmother, but our love continued to grow. It’s easy when you’re best friends. And after a very…very long nine years, Eddie proposed last year in Vermont.

I carried a pocket watch that was given to my dad as a gift from my mom on their wedding day. I also carried 3 roses representing the presence of my dad walking me down the aisle. Making everyone aware of my dad’s presence with me that day was important. Before the ceremony, I gave Eddie brown Lego cuff links, which was a total surprise and sweet too, and lets face it, Eddie at the age of 31 is still not ashamed to admit he loves Legos!

It’s hard to pick one moment that really stood out that day. We had such a perfect day the whole way through. We had picked a meaningful time of year to us both. We were surrounded by the best family and friends anyone could ask for. And it was a special occasion that got everyone in the family together, as there was always someone that had missed something for some reason prior. With all the preparation, readings, speeches, prayer, visual reminders of loved ones, special touches, memories made, etc all delivered with the perfect balance of family and friend participation, this special day was spiritually complete.

Real Midwest Wedding: Emily and Matt, Kansas City, MO

My husband and I are celebrating our three year wedding anniversary on August 30th, so I thought it would be fun to share our wedding on the blog to celebrate.  I did a lot of DIY projects, and it was also my very first experience doing flower arranging for a wedding.  When I was planning things I hadn’t gotten into blogs yet, reading them, writing them, etc. so most of my inspiration came from magazines like Martha Stewart Weddings.  I have to say that since I now work in the industry I could’ve planned our wedding about a million times over using different projects, and decor, as I am constantly being inspired by all the resources out there.  However we had an amazing day, filled with family and friends, and everything turned out just how we wanted, festive and fun for all our guests!

Who, What, Where ~ Ceremony: St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Reception and Catering: The Hobbs Building/Feasts of Fancy. Photography: Matt Nichols. Dress: Jocelyn Himes.  Flowers: emmy-ray. Cake: Creative Cakes. Videography: Carson Swisher.

Matt and I met right at a friends house the summer before we were heading off to college in 2000.  We started dating that summer, and didn’t know where it would go.  Once the school year rolled around we decided to keep dating long distance, he was in Nashville, and I was in Springfield, MO.  It was tough, but we were still getting to know each other through our hour (or sometimes longer) phone chats.  He eventually transferred to school in Rolla, MO and we were only an hour away.  We dated all through college and then once I moved back to Kansas City as well.  In 2007 he proposed and of course I said yes.  By the time we got married, we’d been together for 8 years!

Before Matt proposed to me I had never given all that much thought to my wedding dress, but I knew I wanted something that was unique.  I tried on a few gowns, all of which were lovely, but none really spoke to me.  I decided to have my dress made by Kansas City designer Jocelyn Himes.  I was so happy with the way it turned out, and especially loved the light blue flowers and sash detailing she added.

My earrings and necklace were a gift from my parents, and the flower I wore in my hair was a vintage brooch I bought on eBay and painted a soft pearl white to match my dress.  My grandmother made my garters (she used to design wedding dresses, veils, and accessories), one to keep and one to toss.

The very first bridal bouquet I ever designed was my own.  I wanted the colors of the flowers to be bright and cheerful, so we used a red, orange, and pink color palette.  The butterfly brooch was my something old, and borrowed, since it used to belong to my late grandmother, and was borrowed from my cousin (and bridesmaid).

I screen and relief printed all of our invitations.  I wanted the feel of something hand made, and since I graduated with a BFA in Printmaking it made sense for us to do our own invites.  I took the design from the invites and also made programs for the ceremony.

Our ceremony took place in the church I’d attended every Sunday since I was born, and also where my parents were married.

All of the bridesmaids wore different color dresses in magenta, dark and bright red, and poppy orange, with a royal blue sash to accent (and both mothers wore blue dresses to coordinate) and silver shoes, with jewelry I designed and made for them.  We also had a groomsmaid and a bridsman in our wedding party.

For the reception I collected milk glass and clear vintage glass containers for the centerpieces, which were a mix of the warm colors with a little blue delphinium mixed in.  I also sewed table runners for all the tables, and made a canopy of fabric and lights to drape over the dance floor, thanks so some specs provided by Blue Bouquet. We hung bright red chinese lanterns throughout the room to add a little bit of a festive feeling.

Our cake design was inspired by Martha Stewart Weddings.  It was hot pink with white cherry blossom fondant flowers cascading all the way down it.  We toasted with vintage glasses that belonged to my late grandmother.  Strawberry cake is my absolute favorite, but I know some people don’t like it, so we had strawberry cupcakes made to serve as well as our cake.

For favors we gave our guests fans so they could be cool in the warm summer evening, and also had a photo booth, which was incredibly popular.  We also got a guest book with pictures from the booth and messages they wrote inside.  I love going back and looking at it, probably even more than our wedding album.

We loved so many parts of our day, but one of our favorites had to be the speeches.  My dads was so heartfelt, Matt’s brothers/best man’s was short, but so sweet, and my sisters both stole the show.  My sister Lainey cried the entire time, and there probably wasn’t a dry eye in the house, and then my youngest sister Tara livened things back up with her speech full of jokes.  Everyone was roaring with laughter, and can you believe she was only nine years old at the time?  Also my favorite photo from our day was a shot we took in the middle of Main Street.  Matt Nichols had us jump out of the trolley on the way to the reception and we took pictures right there in the median.  Our moms were freaking out, but it’s a great memory for sure, and a beautiful shot of the city we love in the background.

Thanks so much for letting us share our day with you guys.  I’m so lucky to be married to such a kind, generous, and intelligent guy.  So happy anniversary Matt, I can’t wait to see what adventures the coming years have in store for us.
