From the bride, Amy….

When we first got engaged, Shaun and I spent a quiet moment to reflect on what a wedding means to us. Our initial thought was the opportunity to just be together. After meeting in Vancouver, Canada, most of our relationship had been spent across an ocean; Shaun’s soccer career taking him back to England and mine in the States. We knew that where we had come from and where we met would play into the planning. But more so, our wedding meant the joining of two worlds, and two families.

Our venue, with its bare loft vibe, varied levels and stunning flower shop, reminded us of places we had been in Vancouver. Our invitations and stationery were designed by a good friend, and assembled by family, designed to tie in an old Hollywood feel inspired by my wedding dress.

The ceremony music featured Welsh and English folk songs, a nod to the groom’s heritage, and the six-pence in my shoe came straight from England, courtesy of Shaun’s mum. My something borrowed was my great-grandmother’s wedding ring, which both my mother and grandmother had on their wedding days. All of the floral arrangements included myrtle, a traditional flower in English and Welsh bouquets, signifying love and marriage.

After the ceremony, the guests dined on food inspired by our hometowns, such as fish and chips served in newspaper cones and Chicago style hotdogs. The bar featured signature drinks, named after the Fred Astaire movies my parents had met and fell in love watching, and the cocktail hour included a scotch tasting station to represent my affection for the spirit. And of course, a chocolate and butter cream cake for the chocolate loving groom. We tied all of these little details and more into our seating cards; small booklets containing tidbits about the wedding, romantic quotes, and wedding trivia for our guests.

For us, the fun in planning our wedding was finding ways to represent our love for each other, and what makes us unique, as well as our love for our families in our event. The small personal details made the evening incredibly touching. And being together at the end of it all? Well, that’s just icing on the wedding cake.

Real Weddings: Mindy and Jim, Kansas City, Missouri

I don’t know about you you, but with how ridiculously hot this summer has been I’m definitely in the mood for fall.  On that note I thought it would be perfect to share Mindy and Jim’s adorable October wedding to get us all in the spirit of one of my favorite seasons.  When planning their day Mindy said that they had a lot of out of town guests, so they really wanted to showcase Kansas City.  After attending a few different events at Boulevard Brewery she and Jim knew it was the right spot for their wedding, with a lovely space, views of the KC skyline, and of course some of the best beer around!  She drew color inspiration from the Boulevard logo, and added in some neutral grey to soften the navy and yellow palette.  A crew of crafty family and friends helped pull together the hand made decor, and Carolyn of Ultrapom, a local event rental company added lovely linens, and containers, as well as helping set up on the day of.  A big thank you to Mindy for sharing all the details of the day, and to Heather Brulez for the lovely images.

From the bride, Mindy…

Jim and Mindy met at Cinzetti’s Italian restaurant in Overland Park KS in 2005.  Mindy was being trained in her first serving job when Jim hurried through the front door, eager to check on his week’s sales numbers. Taken with Mindy’s blue eyes and good manners, he broke his rule of dating a co-worker by asking her out for a cherry soda.  Mindy was humored and intrigued by the cherry soda request.  Phone numbers were exchanged and a first date was scheduled.  Being new to Kansas City, Mindy had never been to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art.  Jim decided that he would take her there for their first date.  Six years later, they returned to the same location where Jim proposed to Mindy and she gladly said YES!

My mom was the master of DIY projects when I was growing up.  She sewed my dresses, doll dresses, Halloween costumes, arranged dried flowers, etched glass….you name it.  I’ve tried to follow in her footsteps but only seem to leave half finished projects in my wake.

When it came to my wedding, I wanted that do-it-yourself feel in the decor to make our guests feel at home.  I gathered ideas from online and went to craft stores to get inspired but it was all a little overwhelming. The project supervisor in me spoke up and I decided to delegate instead.

Being the crafty gal that she is, my mom made all of the paper flowers for our centerpieces.  Jim actually had the idea to shred Kansas City Star newspapers to use as filler for the vases.  I knew I chose the right guy!

I hired Alicia Dean of CCOinc, a graphic designer whom I work with to design our save the date’s and wedding invitations.  She and I collaborated on the design and I couldn’t have been happier!  Alicia also designed and produced our guest book which was a tree for our guests to “leaf” their fingerprint and sign.

Bridesmaids Leah & Amy hand folded all of the “Cootie Catchers” which served as our ceremony programs.  I created the cupcake decor from some long forgotten project materials laying around the house and also the table numbers and our place cards.

Jim and his family sweetly gifted me some jewelry from the women on both sides of his family.  I requested that our florist Melissa Garris (Dutch Flowers in the River Market) attach them to my bridal bouquet.

The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art was the only choice for our pre-wedding photos for me.  Jim and I had our first date and our proposal there.  The weather couldn’t have been better for the end of October and I’m still amazed at how the photos look like they were taken in June.

Aside from all the usual things brides say were their favorite parts…it was truly the professionalism and outstanding level of service each of our vendors brought to our wedding day.  Seeing all of our own visions, research hours and dollars working through our vendors’ skill sets & creativity to orchestrate a memorable event for our guests was extremely rewarding.

Real Wedding: Kelly and Evan, Kansas City, Missouri

So for today’s post things are going to get a bit gushy, and a bit mushy, and you’ll soon see why.  Kelly e-mailed me back in early spring about having her wedding featured on Middle of the Map.  I checked it out, and instantly fell in love with their event while looking at pictures on her blog 26east.  Further investigation led me to the realization that not only was their wedding awesome, their house was so fun, and they’re a super cute family, but are also our neighbors (just one block away), and I had admired their house from afar.  I was excited for this discovery, and fortunately Kelly was too.  We’ve since gotten to know Kelly and Evan, and I’m so happy that they are our neighbors, and new friends.  I only wish I’d met them sooner!

But back to their wedding…They did tons of DIY projects, including all the flowers and decor, and chose a classic black and white color palette with lots of graphic patterns and letters.  Their personal style for the day was amazing, with Evan in a light grey suit, and Kelly wearing an assortment of fantastic headbands, plus their daughter Alex’s beautiful dress which perfectly tied in with the whole event.  I can’t say enough good things about this event, so I’ll just let you take a look (told you I was going to be gushing).  A huge thank you to Kelly for sharing their amazing day, and all the details.  It’s a longer narrative than I usually share, but their whole event was so unique from start to finish.  If you’re looking to plan an outside the box, casual event it’s a must read.  Also thank you to We Are the Parsons for their beautiful images.  Enjoy!

From the bride, Kelly…

Evan and I met on Craigslist.  We like to start the story that way because it gets people attention and we get crazy looks.  We like to pretend we’re comedians, so we’ll do anything for a cheap laugh.  But it’s true – Craigslist brought us together, just not in the way you’d imagine.  There are a million details to the story, but the Cliff Notes version is that I bought a bookcase off Craiglist and that’s how we met.  No sparks.  No romance.  Just $25 cash, and a home for books.  Three months later he found the motorcycle he was looking for on Craigslist and it just so happened to be my next door neighbor who was selling it.  And that my friends is the short story of how we met and met again and realized it was fate and threw caution to the wind. Love soon followed.

We are a very hands-on, DIY obsessed couple so we knew right from the beginning we would make this wedding our own.  Our main goal was to plan something unique to us, we kept referring to it as out of the box, but not foreign.  The idea was to do make it different, yet still incorporate a little tradition so our guests could relate to it and manage everything on a pretty modest budget.  We made almost every piece of decor and even decorated the space, along with some amazing friends, on the morning of our wedding.

We decided we didn’t want a traditional wedding party so we selected a group of our friends and family who were extra special to us, asked them to dress in our color theme (black/white/gray) and stand near us during the ceremony.  It was very “come as you are and be who you are” type of thing.  Since I have one sister and Evan has one brother, we selected them as Matron of Honor and the Best Man.  My daughter was the flower girl/ribbon bearer.

One thing that is really special to us is our home.  The year before the wedding we bought and renovated a 100 year old house in the Brookside neighborhood of Kansas City, Mo.  With all of our family coming from out of town, most of which had never been to our home, we knew we wanted it to be a central location.  We loved having a house full of people coming and going all weekend.  We even hosted our rehearsal-less rehearsal dinner at home so we could have both families and all of our friends in our home together, a once in a lifetime experience for sure.

On our wedding day, we opted to host a cocktail hour before the actual ceremony.  We wanted to create a laid back mood and get everyone ready to party!  When guests arrived at the venue they were greeted by our parents along with signature cocktails that we had selected.   While our guests were served passed appetizers and drinks below, we gathered in a loft space just above the actual event space, with our wedding crew.  This was a time for us to come together with our closest friends privately, relax and reflect.

I wrote our ceremony “script” because we wanted to be sure it really represented all that we were thinking and feeling.  We wanted to be sure to include special recognition for the family that was being formed with my daughter and for the unique circumstances that brought us together.  We incorporated a hand fasting ritual, which involved both moms presenting the ribbons they received and tying them together around our joined hands.  We did this to represent the joining of families and to symbolize an old Italian and Polish tradition of “tying the knot”.  This was done in place of a unity candle and along with a beautiful poem that was read during it.

We wrote our own vows and had my brother read a poem called “Destiny” in place of  traditional readings. This was such a touching moment during the ceremony because this poem alone summed up everything about our lives, things we had been through before and how we had found each other.  As we exchanged rings and were finally announced as husband and wife, our wedding party showered us with hundreds of rose petals and we were embraced by all of our friends and family.

The moment that stands out the most to me was having my dad play guitar and sing to us for our first dance together as husband and wife.  I will never forget that moment with him or with my husband.

All in all we both credit our wedding day with being the most fun we have ever had in a single weekend.  We 100% believe that taking a more casual approach to everything is what it all boils down to.  There was no pressure on us to fall in line with tradition or live up to anyone’s expectations.  We definitely got funny looks and nervous laughs from our parents and friends during the planning, but in the end everyone saw and understood our vision.  We knew all along what we wanted and by keeping the focus on our love and personalities, we had the best wedding possible – for us.

In the end I give my amazing husband so much credit.  From the very beginning he was a part of the planning and he wanted me to know we were in this together — even with all my crazy ideas and plans.  Along with the dress, the food, flowers and everything in between, I walked into the process with a true partner and as we go forward in life, I have realized that is the most important detail of all.  Looking back through our incredible photos, what sticks with us is how naturally everything evolved and how incredibly relaxed and happy we were that day.

Real Wedding: Song and Casey, Kansas City, Missouri

For their wedding Casey and Song kept things simple, clean, and modern, and I think that it really let’s the fun and emotion of their day shine through.  I’m really excited to have their wedding on the blog because not only did One Tree Photography shoot the photos, but also the video.  It was definitely the video that sold me, I think one of my favorite moments is the first look when Song exclaims “Dammit I am going to cry!”   Song, and interior designer, and self described “control freak” did tons of projects for their day including all the paper goods, ceremony, and reception decor.  A big thank you to her for sharing all the details of her and Casey’s day, and to Matt of One Tree Photography for his lovely images and video.

From the bride…

Casey and I met at Kansas State University during my freshman year. We skipped the friendship stage and dove right into a relationship. I guess you can say it was love at first sight. As our relationship progressed, we became best friends and found out how eerily we complement each other. We are the classic goofy couple. After almost six years of dating, Casey popped the question. He took me to our favorite restaurant (Haru’s Steak and Sushi) and when I placed my hands on the table, he tried to sneakily slip the ring on my finger. The funny thing was that he accidentally put the ring on the wrong hand! It was pretty cute and a classic Song and Casey moment.

Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite color scheme is black and green. So it was no surprise that the colors for our wedding would be black and green with an apple theme (Casey’s favorite fruit are granny smith apples). Casey and I also love the urban, lofty aesthetic, which we incorporated through our venue at Studio 2131, and photography sites. We also wanted to include some Korean traditions to pay homage to my culture. A classic Korean wedding picture is of the Bride and Groom sitting very upright with a stoic expression. So we had the entire wedding party and ourselves do this pose.

There really was no one favorite part of our wedding day. The entire day was a blur of emotions, from flutters, excitement, and anything in between. We were blessed to be surrounded by close family and friends who were all genuinely excited for us and helped celebrate our marriage until the venue kicked us out. Casey and I woke up the next day as husband and wife with a ton of memorable stories to share. Our day could not have been any better.

Real Weddings: Erin and Curtis, Kansas City, Missouri

Erin and Curtis are both part of the architecture community in Kansas City.  It’s easy to see their love of clean, modern design throughout their wedding from the invitations, to the flowers, and the event space they chose.  Curtis even proposed to Erin with a ring designed by one of her favorite architects, Frank Gehry.  Erin says she chose the fresh green color palette because it’s one of her favorite colors, and since it was a spring wedding she thought it’d be perfect.  A big thank you to Erin and Curtis for sharing all the details of their big day, and to Rachel of RPM photography for all her lovely, and incredibly detailed images.

Who, What, Where ~ Ceremony: Unity Temple.  Reception: Berg Event Space.  Photography: RPM Photography.  Flowers: Blue Bouquet.  Cake: Slice Custom Cakes.  Ice Cream: Coldstone Creamery.  Caterer: Delish.

From the bride…

In March of 2010 we planned a trip to Colorado for the summer.  Curtis, Max (our black lab) & I drove to Colorado for the his cousin’s wedding and afterwards traveled all over the state. We visited friends in Boulder, stayed in a cabin for a few days, did some hiking, and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. Near the end of the trip we went to the Great Sand Dunes National Park, a place Curtis visited as a child. We each took a photo of the other and when we got together for a picture Curtis got down on one knee. I was completely surprised and the moment was perfect. After trying to fly a kite on the Dunes we headed to Colorado Springs were we had a special celebration dinner and spent the night at a bed & breakfast. It was clearly our most memorable vacation.  We took a bottle of sand from the Dunes and used it in our sand ceremony which was part of the wedding ceremony.

Anything involving paper was DIY.  I bought all of the supplies at Paper Source and also went to a class to learn the basics. I created a monogram from my engagement ring and used it on most paper items. Also, my Mom bought handkerchiefs for both of us and embroidered our names & wedding date.

I LOVE ice cream so we had Cold Stone at the wedding to serve ice cream instead of cake. We got a small cake just to cut and it was a simple design and cut to match my wedding ring.

I wore my Mom’s diamond studs as my something borrowed. We also did an “anniversary dance” where all couples come to the dance floor. Then couples who have been married 5 yrs or less are asked to leave the dance floor, 10 yrs, 20 yrs, etc. The remaining couple was my grandparents who have been married 64 yrs!

We did quite a few pictures at the Nelson Atkins Art Museum and the Bloch building addition. The architect, Steven Holl, is one of our favorites and we love the new building so that was a no brainer. We also did some pics on the plaza – where I lived for a few years after graduation.

I will always remember our first look and how excited he was to see me in my wedding gown. I also LOVE dancing and spent much of the night on the dance floor with friends, family, and my husband.
