Real Wedding: Kelly & Melissa, Michigan

Today’s wedding has us dreaming about warmer weather and summer vacations by the lake.
For Kelly and Melissa, Grosse Ile, Michigan, a small island south of Detroit, provided the perfect backdrop for their wedding.  It is also home for much of Melissa’s family and where Kelley Jordon Photography set the scene for the gorgeous images that follow.  Friends and family from all over the map joined together on the island, on this warm summer day, to be a part of their ceremony and watch their love set sail.  Two of the bride’s cousins served as wedding planner and graphic designer, ensuring that every last detail perfectly accentuated their personalities and plans – and just look at the bride’s gorgeous dress!  Wow!  We love everything about this summer-fun event and want to thank Kelley Jordan Photography and the amazing couple for sharing it with us and with you, our always amazing readers!

From the bride, Melissa…

Kelly arrived home from work Sunday night over Memorial day weekend with not one, but two big surprises. As he tentatively entered the loft with my dream puppy wrapped in his arms, tears began streaming down my face when I saw them. As he dropped to his knee, I thought he had dropped something, but instead he was asking me to be his wife with the ring tied around the puppy’s neck.

We decided to get married on Grosse Ile, Michigan, a small island south of Detroit where my family lives. My two fabulous cousins, Nicole Stone, wedding planner extraordainarie, and Jamie Stone, graphic designer, planned and made my wedding a beautiful reality. My
cousins hand-made all of the invitations, centerpieces and reception decor.  I’m forever indebted to them for doing this as I live in Atlanta and it just wasn’t feasible to do this without them!

The ceremony was at St. Anne’s chapel, where I was baptized at 6 months old, and the reception was around the corner at Bishop’s Cottage B&B. The most special photo locations were my grandparents beautiful 1940′s home, garden and boating dock. I also gave Kelly a plane propeller tie pin the day of the wedding as a surprise to remember his grandparents that are no longer with us. Kelly’s life was greatly influenced by his maternal grandmother, Willie Jewel Peacock Kelly, who was a WASP (Women’s Air Force Service Pilot) in WWII. In 2010 she along with the other WASPS were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor which is housed in the Smithsonian.  During Kelly’s formative years he dreamed of being a pilot and while still in high school he earned his pilot’s license.

My favorite part of the day was spending time with family friends who traveled from Massachusetts, Chicago, Texas, Georgia, California, Florida, etc to be there! My favorite moment was with Kelly though in the secret garden (first picture).

Real Wedding: Kylene and Chris, Michigan

Kylene and Chris love the outdoors.  In fact Chris proposed to her on their annual Thanksgiving camping trip.  When they were planning their wedding Kylene said it was important to them to have a laid back event that reflected their love of nature.  Once they found their venue the ideas started flowing.  Their day included tons of DIY projects that both Kylene, Christ, and their family and friends all participated in creating.  Some of my favorite details are the heart shaped bird seed favors, and the embroidered hoops that Kylene’s mother created.  Everything flows so well together, and these two created an event that was uniquely their own.  A big thank you to Kylene for the details about the day, and to Amy Straka for the lovely images.

From the bride…

Chris and I met at a Detroit Tigers baseball game.  We were both there with different groups and randomly sat next to each other.  We started chatting and didn’t stop, even when the game got called because of rain.  It was a pretty immediate, meant to be relationship.

We started a Thanksgiving tradition our first year of dating to use the long weekend to drive from Michigan to Tennessee, camp in the Smoky Mountains, and hike.  We dated for a little over two years when we returned to the Smoky Mountains for our annual trip.  The first night down, Thanksgiving night, we attempted to watch a sunset at Clingman’s Dome but instead arrived to a freezing snow storm.  The next day we tried going back up to watch the sunset but the road was closed.  We settled for another beautiful view of Newfound Gap.  Chris was experimenting with our new tripod that he insisted on getting prior to our trip, while I was enjoying the views of the Smoky Mountains at dusk.  When he came to pose for a picture with me, he got down on one knee.

To keep cost to a minimum, we did a lot of the grunt work ourselves (and pawned it off on our awesome friends and family).  Our best man helped to design and print all of our stationary.  My mom made the embroidery hoop heart that hung by the escort cards.  A good friend and the art teacher at my school painted the boards and all of our signage (road signs, water, tea, refresh, etc).

My engagement ring is my late grandmothers.  I had inherited it when she passed away.  Chris found out without me knowing and got it from my mom.  He kept the setting the same, which I love, and got it polished up.  I didn’t believe him when he told me it was hers because it looked so new and I remember it so worn.  It was also her pearl necklace that I wore

Favorite moments of the day:

Chris:  The quick moment the two of us stepped outside during the reception to capture the night.  It was fun to look around, with my new wife, and see all of our closest friends and family celebrating our marriage.

Kylene:  Our ceremony.  A good friend married us and she made the ceremony personal and perfect.  It was humbling to have so many people surround us to share in our vows to each other.  It was exciting to finally make those vows to Chris “official”.  Of course everything before and after was fun too but the ceremony meant the most to me!

Engagement Session: Kelly and Derek, Empire, Michigan

Kelly and Derek have their Wedding day set for October 13, 2012 in Elberta, Michigan along Lake Michigan. They both love the Detroit Red Wings and the arena where their e-session was shot is where the Red Wings train. After the skating they headed over to North Peak Brewing Company and relaxed with a few brews. They then headed off to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore for some chilly (but beautiful) beach shots.  Thanks to Paul Retherford Photography for the lovely images.

Engagement Session: Kelsie and Billy, Michigan

Kelsie and Billy are both Ann Arbor, Michigan natives, so it was only natural that they take pictures in their home town.   As University of Michigan fans they spent the engagement session on campus, and also at the beautiful botanical gardens run by the university. As true Northerners some cold weather in January didn’t stop them from grabbing a couple of adorable outdoor pics, and enjoying some hot cocoa together.  A big thank you to Melanie Reyes Photography for submitting these sweet images.

Real Weddings: Desi and Katy, South Haven, Michigan

When I first saw this wedding I was a bit disappointed because I thought I might not be able to feature it.  I thought, oh, it’s a destination wedding, but after second glance I discovered it was a beautiful Michigan wedding, and I’m so excited to share it.  It’s bursting with bright color, and DIY details that I love to feature on Middle of the Map.  Kate is an avid crafter, and although Desi thought she was crazy to try to do so much for their big day, she dove right in.  She made all the paper flower garlands, bunting and napkins out of IKEA fabric, corsages from silk scarves for the bridesmaids, plus all the centerpieces made from flowers purchased at a local market.  All their hard work added up to a truly personal wedding.  A big thank you to Katy for sharing all the details of their day, and to Theresa Scarbrough Photography for the vibrant, fun images!

Who, What, Where ~ Reception: Foundry Hall, Photography: Theresa Scarbrough Photography.  Flowers: Stems for bouquet, Reflect Glamour for bouts, farmers market centerpieces, Catering: Cristine Ferris, Cupcakes: Desserts by Lori, Coordinator/Planner: Elements of Elegance, Veil: Megan Lim,  Dress: Jenny Yoo.

From the bride…

Desi and I have known each other for about 10 years. We met at DePaul and ran in the same social circle. We never dated then, but we both had unspoken crushes on each other. After college I moved to South Africa for three years and when I came back two of our friends set us up and we’ve been together ever since.

We had tons of help from our friends and family, and that was really special to us. We had friends not only help us with the crafting, but we also had friends that designed our wedding invites, took our engagement photos, collected milk glass for us, made my veil, and got up early the morning of the wedding to decorate the reception hall.

I think all of the small touches really made the wedding special for everyone. We borrowed an old typewriter for the reception and asked people to write us love, or good luck notes. Instead of doing traditional favors, we took images from the invites and had buttons made. Desi is Filipino so the guys all wore Barongs to represent and respect his culture. Desi also picked out boutonnieres made with succulents so the guys could take them home and replant them as a souvenir.

My parents moved to South Haven, Michigan about 2 years ago and there was no doubt that Desi and I would get married there. The town is quaint and the beach is beautiful. We really wanted everyone to enjoy one last summer getaway and this was the perfect place for that.

It’s hard to pinpoint the best part of the wedding day, but Desi and I both agree that we have never felt so much love in our lives. It was amazing to be surrounded by people that were there just to show us love and to support us. What more could we have asked for?
