Real Wedding: Halley and Josh, Chicago, Illinois

Halley and Josh’s wedding can’t be summed up with just one word.  They have so many classic elements, but at the same time added a lot of quirky, hand made items, and mixed it up with some special family traditions as well.  I love the bright pops of coral throughout the event, their wedding invites which tell the story of their relationship (such a personal touch), and I’m of course a sucker for any event that includes pets, especially a giant Great Dane.  A big thank you to Halley for sharing all the details from the day, and to Heather Parker for submitting her lovely images.

From Halley…

Josh and I are high school sweethearts. We met the summer before my freshman year of high school. After high school, we both went to Indiana University. We traveled Europe together, and got a dog … then moved back to Chicago after graduation. We’ve been here since and we absolutely love it!

We knew we wanted a Chicago wedding. Gallery 1028 was a perfect choice. A historic piece of Chicago real estate = a unique venue for a wedding.

I cannot even tell you how long it took us to choose a color scheme for our wedding. I think I changed my mind 70 times. In the end, it took a trip to a flower market in the west loop with our florist (josh’s uncle!). We put together the centerpieces and bouquets right then and there. We stuck with all natural, but exquisite floral colors … bright coral reds and variations of peachy pinks.

My mom and josh’s mom made the desserts at the wedding (besides the cake). My mom made pizzeles (traditional italian cookies) and josh’s mom made arugala (traditional Jewish cookies). My mom also made a special Lithuanian alcohol that has been in her family for years for a special toast josh and I made.

We also did the hora and josh broke the glass at the ceremony. Both of these Jewish traditions were very important to him and his family.   For my favorite moments of the day the first would have to be the reveal when josh and I had a quite moment together to say, hi, I love you, you look great.  Second would be after the ceremony where we had some more time to talk just the two of us.  We spent this time reminding each other how excited we are, and how much we love each other.

Where do you live, work, and what do you like to do for fun?

We live in Blue Springs, Missouri. If we aren’t working out of our home office, you can find us at Starbucks! We live on espresso for our late night editing sessions. Since our baby was born our nights out have turned into nights in. We love watching netflix and making crazy faces to make our son laugh.

When did you first become interested in shooting films, and what sparked your interest?

Last year I saw my friend’s wedding highlight video and loved how the story of the day was told. I always looked at wedding video as being boring and something I wouldn’t want to shoot, but after seeing this video I fell in love with the idea of building a narrative.

Where did you learn to shoot and edit video.  What’s your background?

After graduating from Northwest Missouri State University, I started my career at a small video editing studio. Learned a lot and got to work with some great clients.

When did you decide to start your business MTVIDYO, and why?

Two years after being at the studio, I decided to venture out on my own and started MTVIDYO. My first project I got to edit was a travel show that aired on Halogen. After traveling with the show around the world I wanted to start doing more production of my own. I shot a wedding with a friend a couple months after I got back and fell in love with building a story of the day. When Ali saw my excitement for wedding video she instantly wanted to be a part of it. She went to school to be a wedding planner, so this was right up her alley. It has been an amazing experience to shoot weddings and see our passions come together.

What’s your favorite part about capturing someone’s big day?

We love seeing the entire day unfold. We think the best moments are the ones that happen in-between the photos. One of our favorite moments is seeing the parents of the bride as they see their daughter in her wedding dress. We also love capturing the bride and groom’s reaction as they see each other for the for the first time. It is amazing to be able to capture those moments that usually go unnoticed.

Any words of advice you can offer to couples looking to hire a videographer for their wedding day?

We know that in a brides wedding budget, a videographer is the first thing to get cut, but we also know that it’s always the number one thing brides regret cutting. Our advice would be to take a look at how wedding videos have changed. Be sure to look at the videographers work and make sure it fits your style. If you find the right company you will not only have video of your ceremony but a beautiful story about one of the biggest days of your life!
