Featured Vendor: emmy-ray

I’ve started this post several different times, and have never actually finished it.  Reason being that I’m not the best at promoting myself.  However I am not just the writer of Middle of the Map Weddings, I’m also a wedding vendor myself.  So for today’s featured vendor post, here’s a little more about me and my business, emmy-ray.

Where to find me: website, blog, Facebook, Twitter

I live in Kansas City, along with my husband and my three pups, Hazel, Ollie, and Flynn, in an old Brookside house where my husband actually grew up.  We bought the house from his parents, and have spent the last 3 years doing projects, and updating it to make it our own.  I do my jewelry and floral design work both from a home based studio.

I received my degree in fine arts with an emphasis in printmaking and metalsmithing.  It was never a question in my mind whether or not I would do something creative as a career, it was a just a matter of figuring out what that would be exactly.  I started emmy-ray in 2007, metalsmithing and making my own jewelry on the side, while I worked full time making a local artists designs.  I continued making and selling my work at local shows, and on Etsy, and also did a brief (and wonderful) stint for two years as an art teacher for elementary school students.

I’ve always had a love for flowers.  Nature and floral motifs ran throughout my 2-D, and jewelry designs.  My first experience doing arranging for a wedding was my own in 2008 (above is my bouquet along with a brooch that belonged to my grandmother).  It was stressful, but completely worth it, because it set me on the path of exploring and learning more about floral design.  I began getting referrals from friends who had been at my wedding, and three years later I am so happy to say that I’m able to do it full time.

Our business is indie through and through.  We are a two person operation, it’s me and my mom, who is my assistant and right hand designer.  We both love flowers, and every time we go to the wholesaler to get them for an event, it’s like Christmas morning.  We do weddings of all shapes and sizes, from small backyard events, to big hotel ballrooms with 400 guests.  I’m truly passionate about weddings, and staying current with what’s happening in the industry, which is one of the reasons I decided to start Middle of the Map.

Along with flowers and jewelry, I’ve also recently added  menswear to my repetoire, creating hand sewn bow ties, and also cuff links, including custom orders for weddings.  Although doing floral design has become the bulk of my business, I’ll never lose my love for creating jewelry designs, sewing, and crafting.  It’s great to be able to offer multiple services to a couple getting married including jewelry for the bride and bridesmaids, ties for the men, and flowers for the event!

I always ask featured vendors to give words of advice to couples planning their weddings.  Although by the wedding industries standards my business is still young, if there’s one thing I could say it’s trust your vendors.  Do the research, and pick someone whose style is compatible with your own, and whose work you love.  Although you may have a budget, don’t work with a designer you’re not comfortable with just to save a few dollars.  There are so many wedding vendors out there, you’ll be able to find someone who’s a perfect fit, and who’ll be excited about making your vision for your day come to life!

Featured Vendor: Meadowbelle Market

I came across Meadowbelle Market while scouting vendors for the Kansas City Wedding Hive.  We were looking for local, indie businesses that made beautiful hand made goods for weddings.  Erin and Andrea’s business fit the bill perfectly.  They create jewelry, veils and fascinators, garters, boutonniere’s, and even bouquets,  as well as selling mint condition vintage pieces.  In other words everything you would need for your big day.  They’re professional, creative, and incredibly sweet, and I’d recommend their work to a bride any day of the week.  Here’s more about these two talented sisters, and their business:

Where to find them: Etsy Shop, Blog, Twitter

Where do you work and live?

We both live and work in Kansas City, MO. Erin works from her midtown studio, which also happens to be a historic Hyde Park home; it’s a three story classic shirtwaist built in 1903. A lot of inspiration comes from just living in a house that’s over 100 years old. It’s fun to study intricate moldings put in by a master plasterer in the 20s, and to imagine the families that might have lived there over the years. Some vintage / antique furnishing serve as the backdrop for many of Meadowbelle’s photo shoots.

Aundrea lives in a mid-century ranch turned ongoing remodeling project. So far, almost every room has received an update of some sort. Currently, her favorite project was just completed by her husband Chris: A complete fireplace makeover, including wooden architectural details, hidden storage for electronics inside the mantle, and all those unsightly electronic cords concealed behind the wall. Topped off with a pair of sconces! Its like a movie theatre in our living room!

When did you start creating? Have you guys always been interested in craft, art, and design?

Much of our allowances as a kids went towards craft supplies for the latest art project we were working on at any particular time. There was a lot of collaboration going on between the two of us from a young age. I think we’ve always worked well together and built on each others’ ideas. Erin remembers authoring and illustrating a few books around age 7.  Dolls had a mini closet full of hand-sewn dresses and quilts in our house. Summers were spent cramming in any type of art project we could possibly think up.

When did you become interested in jewelry?

We both played around with jewelry designs around age 11 or 12, and even ended up selling some on a small scale in a shop that agreed to carry our work the Parkville area. After a lapse of several years, Erin picked things back up during the college years, taking classes at a local collage and participating in some art shows.

When and why did you decide to start Meadowbelle Market?

Our family has a strong tradition of women entrepreneurs that reaches back several generations. And aside from the obvious – that we simply love anything that involves creativity – Aundrea designed almost everything for her own wedding (including her dress, which she had custom made). Then, when Erin was planning her own wedding a couple years ago, Meadowbelle Market was born. We love that our shop gives us the ability to combine our artistic skills and photography in one place. Although keeping up with real photo shoots for our products can be a challenge, we are able to not only make items, but have a way to present them to our customers. Our online customers are without the ability to hold our items in person, so we feel like the portrayal of our items is important to get a virtual perception of what they are purchasing. We love it when we get to design everything from the jewelry and hairpiece for the bride, to the boutonnieres for the groom and wedding party.

You create mostly wedding jewelry and accessories, what’s your favorite part of being involved with someone’s big day?

Our favorite part about a person’s wedding is knowing this day is going to be one of those ‘moments’ in their life that will be told and re-told to friends, family, and generations to come. Not only are memories created for a lifetime, but this is going to be one of their most cherished and photographed days of their life!  There’s so much creativity and personalization that goes into a wedding. Every wedding is just as unique and inspiring as the story that brought the two together in the first place. It’s so easy to bond over sharing those details and helping someone’s vision become reality.

What words of advice would you offer to any bride looking for jewelry for herself or her bridesmaids?

Our advice to a bride looking for jewelry for herself or bridesmaids would be two part: First, find something for yourself! This is your day, and you want to feel beautiful–but we also know that there are a lot of little details when choosing a look, and sometimes that can be overwhelming. Know what pieces you naturally gravitate to every day. If you look for wedding jewelry that incorporates some of the qualities of your favorite pieces, you can’t go wrong.

For your bridesmaids, you definitely want to have some fun! Every girl will have her own personality and taste, so why not choose the colors and materials (pearls, crystals, metal, etc.) that you’d like your bridesmaids to wear, while choosing a slightly unique piece for each. That way, each girl will enjoy wearing her jewelry again, and it will add interest to your wedding party’s look. Jewelry made just for each girl also doubles as a really great gift!

Featured Vendor: Sudlow Jewelry

We’re excited today to share a post about our very first featured vendor Rachael Sudlow.  She’s a talented jewelry designer who creates beautiful customized items for weddings (and everyday wear), using her own sweet quirky aesthetic.  Let’s find out more about her:

Groups: Etsy Metal Wedding, Etsy Metal,

Born and raised in Lawrence, Kansas, Rachael attended art school at the Rhode Island School of Design and received her degree in photography, which led her to her “Cowscapes” series, in which she takes close up photographs of cows, sheep, and other animals that can sometimes be confused for landscapes:

Rachael has been interested in art and the process of creating from a young age.  With both a mom and grandfather who are artists she says “it’s in the blood”.  She started working with jewelry as a kid using seed beads and embroidery floss to weave bracelets.  At a young age she started working in metal, and has always loved it.  After graduating college she took her jewerly design to a professional level, teaching at the local art center in Lawrence and using their studio space to work on creating new designs.

Rachael says she didn’t think about selling jewelry as a living right away: “A dead end job in web design had me sitting at a computer all day.  Surfing through a few blogs led me to discover the new site Etsy.com & so on a whim I threw a few pictures of old work I had sitting around online.  My first sale was such a validation that I just started making & listing more.  It soon took over & I was able to leave my old job not long after!”

Diamond Dot Ring

Rachael hasn’t always made pieces for weddings: “I was so scared at first to make such an important piece for someone.” However after a request for a platinum band from a local client she decided to go for it, and eventually developed one of her favorite designs, her “Oak Ring” bands, which she now offers in 14kt, white, and rose gold:

Rachael says she wants her designs to be “accessible and fun” so she draws her inspiration from the things she loves, nature, art, clean design lines, with a little bit of quirkiness thrown in the mix.  She also does a lot of custom work, so her clients often help guide the design process.

Custom Magnolia Tree Cufflink

What’s her favorite part about designing for weddings: “With weddings, I love having handmade aspects involved…it feels so much more personal & reflects the couple.  Making wedding rings is an involved process with custom casting them.  It takes several days to cast a piece & each process is a labor of love.” Rachael has also started making items like cufflinks, and money clips that can also be customized and make great gifts for wedding parties: “It’s a cute One of a Kind personal piece that always has a special meaning.
And really, with weddings, it’s always such a happy, sweet time, you can’t help but enjoy being a part of it!”

Hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know Sudlow Jewelry.  Please be sure to check out her website, Etsy shop, and all her links (at top of this article).  A big thanks to Rachael for being part of Mid Map Weddings!
