Featured Vendor: Lilah Paper

I’m so excited today to share the work of Kalyn Denno from Lilah Paper.  Not only is Kalyn super sweet, she is also incredibly talented.  Based locally she creates beautiful, and personal invitation suites for her clients all over the country (and world), and has received rave review from noted wedding blogs like Style Me Pretty, and Southern Weddings, and stationery sites like Invitation Buzz.  However don’t just take my word for it, read below and find out more about Kalyn’s thriving business.

Where to find her: website, Twitter, Facebook, blog

Kalyn lives and works in the beautiful little town of Westwood, Kansas.  She loves her neighborhood, which has neighbors who love to chat, quaint little homes, and tree lined streets.  She feels fortunate to work and live in the same place, and feels that the opportunity to be a wife, mother, and entrepreneur is such a blessing.  The only draw back: her doors are never “closed” as she strives to offer round the clock customer service to her brides.

Kalyn has a bachelors degree in advertising and journalism from the University of Colorado, and then went on to get her masters in Graphic Design from the Art Institute of Colorado.  From that point she worked doing in house design and marketing for various companies, including a Denver Channel 9 News station, doing graphics and animated intros.

I asked Kalyn what sparked her interest in stationery and invitations.  She said she was thinking about getting out of the design industry all together, when she stumbled upon the world of stationery.  She was newly engaged and had the challenging task of creating her own save the dates and wedding invitation suite.  To this day she remains the pickiest client she’s ever had, designing 12 versions before settling on a final design.  The rest is history.  She received rave reviews on her own invites, and with a renewed passion for design she knew it was the perfect job.  In May of 2008 Lilah Paper officially became a business based out of Kansas City.

So where does she get her inspiration for her designs?  Kalyn says so many places!  Some of  her couples have really great stories that become the inspiration behind their invite suite.  Other times she just listens to the bride and groom, and gets a feeling for their personalities and what their vision is for their wedding.  She pulls inspiration from bits and pieces of their conversations, their color scheme, the dress, the wedding venue, etc.  She also says that venues can be a huge source of inspiration, with their architecture and scenery.

Here favorite part of being involved in the wedding industry?  “Being the first impression! The save the date and invitation is the first piece of correspondence that goes out to your guests. I get to be an integral part of  announcing a couple’s big day to all of their friends and family! No pressure, right? But, seriously… I love it! Nothing brightens my day more than receiving an email from one of my brides once the “ooo’s and ahhh’s” start coming in. I am so lucky to be involved in such a momentous occasion for each and every one of my brides and truly enjoy hearing all of the love stories!”

A big thank you to Kalyn for sharing all these answers about her lovely business with us.  I love supporting midwest wedding businesses, and I especially love promoting Kansas City vendors who are as talented as her!  Check out the Lilah Paper website for more samples of her work.

Featured Vendor: Ruff House Art

I first met Jill and Jared through a Kansas City wedding group that I was a part of.  They were instantly friendly, and easy to talk to, and I was instantly drawn to their adorable, and creative letterpress designs.  Slightly off the beaten path, they create original work that ranges from elegant wedding invites to quirky coasters.  I love supporting other midwest indie businesses, so take some time to check out Ruff House Art:

Where to find them: website, Facebook, Etsy, Twitter

Ruff House Art is an in home studio located in Lawrence, KS.  Jill and Jared have two “ridiculously large” dogs (a great dane, their mascot, and a weimeraner), and a new adorable baby girl.  Their location provides them lots of open space, but still keeps them close to their beloved Mass Street in Lawrence.  Their studio adventure started as a laptop and a dinner table, but it’s quickly taken over their extra bedroom and closet.  The future holds grand plans for a dedicated studio space at the house, but for now printing and production takes place in the basement.

Jill became interested in paper crafts from a very young age.  In high school she was really into scrap booking, and because of this hobby she decided to major in graphic design.  After graduating she worked throughout the years in various marketing firms, where she met lots of great people and learned lots about the design and marketing world, including printing techniques, paper vendors, and how to run a business.  The opportunity finally arose for her to make the leap into running her own freelance graphic design business.  From this point Jill literally “fell” into the wedding industry after designing her own wedding invites and those of a few friends.  She soon had enough work doing invitations to make it a full time job, and loves it!

Jill’s favorite part of being in the wedding industry: getting to work with couples on custom invite projects.  ”While sometimes challenging, it is always great to see a couple’s personality shine through in their wedding invites.” Jill and Jared guide their customers through the process of creating their wedding invitations, picking out each aspect of the design.

Ruff House is a two press shop.  They have a 1915 Chandler & Price platen press and a 1940 Kelsey Excelsior.  Both are hand operated, and have their own quirks.  “Working with letterpress is a labor of love, and can be frustrating at times, but nothing compares to letterpress. Letterpress has character and soul, which is perfect for wedding invitations.” They also have digital presses, and modern technology, but Jill says the best days are when the cranky old presses are humming along.

A few words of advice for couples picking out their wedding invites: “With so many unique and handmade wedding vendors out there, don’t think that everything has to be from a big-box company. Find someone that truly cares about your wedding and wants to help you make it perfect. Don’t worry about your invites being terribly matchy matchy with your wedding decor. Have fun with them and let your personality shine through. Your guests will really enjoy opening and reading your wedding invite if they are unique and fun.”
