Real Wedding: Kelsie and Andrew, Mahomet, IL

Today’s Real Wedding features a true collaboration between a bride and her groom.  Kelsie and Andrew knew they wanted a wedding that truly reflected who they are, so they opted to take on several DIY projects together.  They shopped around for objects they loved, spent hours painting signs and found ways to add several personal touches to their day.  They even hosted their reception in the very spot where Andrew proposed – her parents’ backyard!  We love the laid back feel of this event and we especially love the nod to all the people and the places that are important to them.  Photographers Jeremy & Kristin were on-hand to perfectly capture the couple’s story and highlight everything that made this wedding so personal and oh-so-fun!

From the bride, Kelsie…

Andrew and I attended Millikin University as music majors together, and it wasn’t until the end of our Junior year that we took notice of each other and began talking. Throughout our relationship Andrew would show up at my door with sunflowers often (because he knew it was my favorite flower), and we would trot off together having the best of times biking on trails, walking around nearby parks and cities, or just laying on the beach by the local lake. Needless to say much of our time falling in love was spent in the beautiful outdoors together and it was perfect! It came as no surprise to me that he choose to propose to me on the hammock in my parents backyard after a walk in their beautiful downtown historic neighborhood. He wrote me the most beautiful acrostic poem that spelled my name, and after reading it asked me to marry him.

When we started planning our wedding we tried to made sure all along that it would be fun and comfortable for all of our guests. We didn’t want to have a stuffy banquet hall, we wanted to have fresh air and a laid back atmosphere. We choose to have our wedding ceremony at the Mabery Gelvin Botanical Gardens in Mahomet Illinois, and it only seemed fitting to have our reception in my parents huge beautiful backyard.  Although I don’t think our wedding had much of a theme, we seemed to stick mostly to the DIY vintage style for most of it. My original plan was to wear my grandmother’s handmade wedding dress from the 1930′s, but I could not stand the thought of cutting and altering it in order to make it fit properly.  I also decided to have different styles and colors for the bridesmaids and our lovely flower girls.

Andrew and I wanted to make sure that people could see “Us” in all of our wedding day, so we decided to put a lot of DIY touches and projects into our day. We spent countless hours together painting signs for our reception, going to all the local thrift stores, and antique stores buying all the hankies, doilies, and various sizes of flower vases we could find.
Our flowers were arranged by Fleur in Bloomington Illinois. They were amazing and were JUST what I imagined for my wedding day. Since Andrew and I have such a history and love of sunflowers, it seemed fitting that they were the main flower of our day.

Special moments of my day were having my grandmother there to present me with her beautiful white gold and tanzanite necklace. It was such a special moment to share with her, and I will never forget it. I also had the privilege of honoring my grandfather who had passed away the week before our wedding. I had a charm placed on my bouquet with his picture on it, and I also presented an orange lilly (his favorite flower) to my mother who placed it on the chair he would have been sitting in. Having our wedding party place hands on us for the closing prayer at our ceremony was definitely a powerful and touching moment from our day.

My favorite moment of the day was walking out and seeing my Andrew waiting for me on the other side of the bridge. I knew that once I was holding his hands I would be his forever, and THAT was the best feeling a girl could ever have.

Floral Friday: Brazilia Berries and Lavender

We’ve written about the color purple a few times now for Floral Friday, and the reason is that it’s been such a hot trend for the past few wedding seasons, and doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon.  Next to blush and pink, purple is one of the colors I, as a floral designer, get the most requests for.  It works for all seasons, depending on what you pair it with.  For this lovely wedding at Salvage One in Chicago, designer Tori of Fragrant Design added in lavender, and one of the recent trending items in bouquets brazilia.  Perfect for turning a classic , romantic bouquet into eclectic perfection.  Beautiful images by Anna Guziak.

Floral Friday: A Bouquet of Sunshine

When you think of the color yellow what’s the first word that pops into your head.  Happy?  Me too, and that’s just what these beautiful flowers make me, super, duper happy (especially with winter fast approaching).  There’s so much to love, the variety of texture, the lovely boutonnieres, the soft grey dusty miller as a counterpoint to the bright yellow.  Plus who doesn’t love a good billy ball now and then, and it doesn’t hurt when the bride and groom look like models!  A huge thanks to Cathy and David Photographers for sharing, and to White Iris Designs for their beautiful flowers.  Happy Friday everyone!

Real Wedding: Lindsey and Jason, Chicago, Illinois

When you look at Lindsay and Jason’s wedding you can tell right away that it was such a fun event.  Everyone is all smiles, and the bright and cheery color palette of red and aqua compliment the vintage theme of their day.  One detail that obviously stands out is the clothes, make-up, and hair of the entire wedding party.  Lindsay made sure everyone looked retro perfect, and I love her outfit change from a flouncy short dress, to a more traditional lace gown for the ceremony.  My very favorite details of the event?  The amazing vintage car that perfectly fits their colors, and the sweet bouquets made up of red flowers and vintage aqua brooches, so cute!  A big thank you to Lindsay for sharing all the details of the day, and to Joan of Five Grain Events for submitting this lovely wedding.

Even more loveliness…

From the bride, Lindsey…

Jason and I met in 2008. I lived near a bar where he worked as a bartender. I went in one night and noticed the handsome server, but never thought anything of it. Months later, on a whim, I decided to stop in again to see if he happened to be working. Turns out it was the only night that week he was there! We chatted for a few hours and I mustered the courage to give him my number. That was a Monday. By Friday I had not heard from him and kind of gave up on the idea. I was out with friends when he texted me and I became very excited. A few months after dating, Jason got a job in Denver and he moved. We were both very sad and missed each other so much that within four weeks, he was back in Chicago and moving in with me! Three years later, we got engaged after a wonderful dinner at Bistro Campagne and a walk through Millennium Park. We both later laughed about his cheesy line, “I’d like to spend the next Millennium with you, will you marry me?”

Our wedding scheme colors took some thinking- Jason is a visual artist and I am a costume designer, so we knew we wanted something bright and bold but not too tacky. His art work uses a lot of circus and tattoo themes, so when the idea of turquoise/teal and red came up, we knew we loved it.

Our DIY projects included making the hanging art of the red and turquoise paper cranes- it was really a family affair with my mom purchasing them online and my aunt, uncle and Jason building it in the kitchen the day before the wedding. At my bridal shower, one of our four year old flower girls drew a picture of Jason and me under a rainbow and on the back side it said, “Happy Wedding Day!” I immediately knew that would be the cover and inside leaf of our programs. Being a costume designer, I wanted to incorporate vintage flower brooches into my bouquets, but I still wanted real flowers, so I came up with the idea to mix the two. Jason and I made an afternoon of wiring all of the brooches I purchased on eBay and at a local vintage store in order to save some money.

I used my mother’s white childhood Bible as the base of my bouquet and had our florist build a floral arrangement mixed with brooches on top. My mom took photos of our beloved past relatives (including my first dog!) and miniaturized them and put them in tiny little frames. Then she used ivory ribbon and attached them to the bible so that they hung. No one would know what they were unless they were very close, but it was very special for me to carry them on my day. I have a huge stock of buttons, so we sprinkled them around the center pieces (vintage blue Mason jars filled with dahlias, cocks comb, and zinnias).  I loved our aisle runner, I bought red and turquoise printed fabric on sale at JoAnns and hemmed all of the raw edges. I wore a pair of vintage earrings in my hair as accessories.  They worked great!

We also held an after reception party at the bar where Jason and I met. It was great because most of the employees and the owners were at the wedding, so we all headed over and had a great time at the after party.

Real Wedding: Tristan and Erin, Illinois

Erin and Tristan have known each other for a long time (since she was 12, and he was 15), but their romance didn’t begin until many years later.  Both are musicians, and as Erin puts it “It was very romantic falling in love on the road” as they toured with the band they both play in.  A small backyard affair in her father’s backyard , their event is one that has all those personal touches that make a wedding so special.  Plus Erin’s BHLDN dress is just to die for.  A big thank you to Erin for sharing all the details of their day, and to Justine Bursoni for her submission.

Even more loveliness…

From the bride, Erin…

Tristan and I actually met when we were quite young, maybe I was 11 o 12. He would’ve been 14 or 15. He was friends first with my older brother Seth.  They started a band together when they were in early high school and i always had a crush on Tris. :) I was a few years younger which felt like worlds younger at the time. So, time passed, we went to college and eventually I joined a band with Tristan and both of my brothers.  Over time we both realized that we loved each other and the rest is history.  At first, my brothers were not to happy because they were worried we’d ‘break up the band’.   It was very romantic falling in love on the road and later starting our own band.

The colors and themes for our wedding just came after doing some research.  Looking at other wedding blogs and pinterest. We never really chose just two colors because we didn’t want our wedding to be too matchy matchy.  But, for the dresses we chose charcoal grey and had the girls just pick out their own dress keeping in mind a slightly feminine aesthetic.  We decided we were having a garden wedding because his father is a biologist and has the most beautiful back garden.

As far as handmade projects go, we did quite a few.  We made what we wound up calling ‘glow jars’ by taking mason jars and decoupaging them with yellow tissue.  We used battery powered little candles because inside the jars you couldn’t see them.  They were so pretty once night fell!  Oh and also, since i am a bartendress as well as a musician, designed a wedding cocktail for the night.  We called it the ‘holy commitment cucumber gimlet’.  It turned out really well!

There were so many favorite parts of our wedding it’s hard to choose!  I remember the two of us walked out on the deck at the reception and saw the backyard for the first time.  It was so gorgeous and everyone clapped and we both felt so loved.  That was a magical moment for us both.
