Real Weddings: Susan and Jason, St.Louis, Missouri

If I could pick one single word to sum up Susan and Jason’s wedding it would be classic.  From the gorgeous white bouquet, to the beautiful bride and her lace dress, the beautiful monogrammed cake, and the elegant gold and white reception decor, everything about it seems timeless and romantic.  Susan says she had always dreamed of getting married, playing dress up, and planning her special day.  Fortunately for her her older brother introduced her to Jason, and the rest is history.  A big thank you to Susan for sharing all the amazing details of the day!

From the bride, Susan…

A formal yet fun tone was set for our wedding starting with our engagement.  Jason enlisted the help of our dear friend and incredibly talented stationer, Courtney Callahan of Courtney Callahan Paper. She designed a heartfelt invitation that I found in our mailbox from Jason inviting me to a “celebration of our love…past, present and future”.  After an amazing engagement weekend last July, the wedding planning began!

We both grew up in Missouri and knew the wedding would be in my hometown of St. Louis.  My parents joined Greenbriar Hills Country Club the year I was born, it is such a special place to us and there was never a question that it would be our reception site.

To add to the magic of the ceremony, my oldest and closest friend Shannon and her husband Garrett sang a duet of One Hand, One Heart as we lit the Unity Candle. It was the most beautiful and breathtaking thing I have ever heard, I get teary eyed just thinking about how amazing they sounded (they have both sung professionally).  We chose the song because our wedding date was my aunt and uncle’s 40th wedding anniversary and they had One Hand, One Heart at their wedding. It was a meaningful and special moment in so many ways!

With an April wedding date we had an array of gorgeous spring flowers to choose from.  My vision was for a very romantic, elegant yet warm candlelit reception. I wanted lots of white flowers but left the rest of the creative decisions up to genius floral designer Barb Wehking of Bloomin’ Buckets.  My bouquet was filled with fragrant peonies, gardenias, English garden roses and stephanotis.

Both of my grandmother’s are no longer with us, but it was important that they be a part of our wedding.  Both had impeccable class and style so it was easy to incorporate their chic vintage pieces.  I wore one grandmother’s broach as a hair piece and carried her hand beaded pearl clutch.  And due to the unusually cool April temps, I wore my other grandma’s silver fox stole to keep me warm!  Additionally, my mom and her sister’s all wore the same veil of handmade Belgium lace at their weddings.  It had become too fragile for me to wear so we used it as an overlay on the cake table.  It stood out beautifully against the federal blue linen and provided a focal point as guests entered the dining room.  Another touch of family sentiment came with Jason’s mom and her siblings surprised him by singing an incredible a cappella prayer before dinner.

Since Courtney Callahan Paper did such a fabulous job on the engagement piece, we hired her to design our custom save the date and invitation suite.  She completely understood our vision and helped bring a modern twist to our traditional wedding. The paper details on our wedding day matched our invitation perfectly. She created a custom monogram and flourish that were used throughout from the programs to the menus to the signage around the reception. Other touches included monogrammed cocktail napkins and guest towels, Mr. and Mrs. signs tied to our chairs, place cards, a Thank You banner, Sparkler Sendoff and Guest Book signs and kitschy late night food labels.

Looking back now, the day brings a huge smile to my face and will continue to do so for a lifetime.  It was filled with love, elegance, unimaginable joy and most of all FUN! It was an amazing celebration that represented Jason and me perfectly.

Real Weddings: Phil and Cristina, Glendale, Ohio

Phil and Cristina have one of those classic love stories you might see in a romantic comedy these days.  Girl meets boy, girl likes boy, they date for awhile, then boy disappears.  They re-connect, as friends mind you, and then girl has an epiphany, she loves the boy, and the rest turns out to be history.  Something else that really struck me about these two is just how important their faith and presence of God in their relationship is.  Here at Middle of the Map I see all kinds of weddings, but for Phil and Cristina their ceremony was super personal, and in all ways an expression of their relationship not only with each other, but also with their faith.  They kept things super traditional, Cristina wore a blusher veil, and they didn’t see each other before the ceremony.  The bride, an artist herself, says she saw their day as a blank canvas, and wanted to fill it with lots of special details.  They chose their venue, the Glendale Lyceum because it felt incredibly romantic, which is exactly the look and feel that Phil and Cristina wanted for their day.  A big thank you to Cristina for sharing all the details from their day, and to Jenna Davis for her lovely images.

From the bride…

Phil and I first started talking online summer of 2007.  We attended the same church and he couldn’t help but comment on an opinion I had posted about the nintendo game Mario Cart, which he played avidly in college.  Our “everday conversations” through email lasted a little over two months before I asked to meet Phil in person.   We went out to dinner on a double date, and we hung out a couple times after that, and then Phil went MIA for 3 weeks!  I heard from Phil again in spring of 2008 when he was going through a really rough time with his health, and we hung out strictly as friends.  I was working on a bachelor’s degree for Art Education and I would be student teaching at the beginning of the school year.  I remember the day my Advisor told me I would be student teaching at Bridgetown Middle School; the same school Phil teaches 8th grade History!!  A pivotal moment in our realtionship was the night I went with him to be baptized at the church we attend.  It was a really special bonding experience.  Almost exactly two years later, Philip asked me to be his wife.

I was especially happy with how the “do it yourself” projects turned out!!  Of course, I would have never accomplished it all without the help of my amazing family!  The biggest and most rewarding project we tackled was making the wedding invitations I am so glad I decided to take on the challenge. Other projects included: putting glitter on over 100 white pumpkins to use as ‘escort cards’ and decoration throughout the hall; my dad used my grandma’s homemade caramel corn recipe to make one of our two favors (we would make it as a family when we were kids; the best part was shaking the bag of popcorn to coat it with caramel); I made the programs and programs “sleeves”. The beautiful purple pockets that hung from every other chair holding two programs and bubbles to be used at our exit; I was so excited to see that project evolve.

My favorite part of the day was seeing Philip’s reaction as I came down the aisle as he saw me for the first time.  I could see the emotion on his face as he processed and took in what was happening.  I knew he was extremely nervous but all I saw was joy!  The entire night was so much fun, from our bubble exit, to pictures, speeches, our first dance (and lots more dancing).

Real Wedding: Kristin and Chad, Columbus, Ohio

Chad and Kristin met six years before they got married.  They were introduced by friends, and hung out for a few months with the same group of people before ever going on their first date.  Once she started planning her wedding Kristin sought inspiration on wedding blogs and in magazines.  She fell in love with a pink and gold palette she found in Martha Stewart Weddings.  She decided that the look was soft and romantic, just what the was looking for and decided to run with it as the inspiration for her and Chad’s day.

Who, What, Where ~ Ceremony: Saint Mary Magdalene.  Reception: Our Lady Of Victory.  Photographer: Studio B Photography.  Flowers: Balloons By Me.  Cake: Cakes Creatively By Crystal.  Dress: Boutique 21.  Hair: Cindy Ward.  Make Up: Jordan Wolverton.

From the Bride…

There were many DIY projects in the wedding. I made my bouquet out of brooches mostly my grandmothers or ones that were gifts from my mom. I made my flower girls halos. We painted old books with chalk board paint and added some sparkle and wrote street names for table seating. We hand stamped all of our programs and thank you cards. I also made my own wish tree with real branches I painted gold.

There were a few heirlooms in the wedding, the brooches from my grandmother for the bouquet, and I also used her prayer bible during the ceremony. I tied it to the ring bearer pillow and he carried it along with the pillow.

Some of the photo locations that had special meaning to us were in the small neighborhood where our home is located. The mural we took pictures in front of is at the park near our house were we work out together. The best part of my day was the actual ceremony and marrying the man of my dreams!!! I am very blessed to call him my husband.

Real Weddings: Darshna and Hetesh, Springfield, MO

I’m super excited to feature today’s wedding on the blog, not only because it’s such a joyful and colorful event, but also because Darshna was so sweet and really happy about having it on the site.  It’s also the very first Indian wedding we’ve ever had on the blog, and one from my home away from home (Springfield, MO where I went to college).  A big thank you to Darshna and Hetesh for sharing all the details of their beautiful day, and to Natasha Lopez for her lovely images!

Who, What, Where ~ Venues: At home on Thursday and Friday morning, at the Dolling Park Family Center Friday Evening, and then University Plaza Hotel Saturday.  Photography: Natasha Lopez.  Catering: Pankaj & Chefs.  Decor: Aayojan LLC Wedding Decorator.  Brides Dress: Paris showroom in Gujarat, India.  Flowers: Sam’s Club.  Videographer: Mitul Patel.  Cake: Cake Creations by Darlene.

From the Bride…

Hetesh and I met though a dating website called Shaadi.com and it was hard because Hetesh lived in Birmingham, AL and I lived in Springfield.  We both knew what we wanted, and that was to be with each other, and we made it possible with lots of visits and communicating over the phone everyday.

We aimed for the wedding colors to be pink and gold (yellow), but with an Indian wedding it is very hard to keep other colors out. We used gold interchangeably with yellow because there is a lot more gold in an Indian wedding.

I, my parents, and my aunts, and uncles did a lot of the decor at home.  The home of the Indian bride is decorated as much as the bride herself, so it was a big part of it.  If there are pictures of the interior of the home, these decorations were DIY projects made with sarees.  For the henna party, we bought fabric from Wal-mart and sewed pillows and put them on the floor for guests to use while getting henna done.  I also made the bridesmaids bouquets as well as the reception centerpieces with hobby lobby calla lilies and glass vases.  We also made the boutonnieres with mini calla lilies from Sam’s club.  There were a lot of smaller projects throughout the wedding, but too many to name.

The anklets that I wore the first morning of the 3 days were passed on from my mom to my sister and then to me.  So, my mom wore them at her wedding, then my sister wore them at her wedding, and then I got them.  My favorite part of the wedding was when we walked around the holy fire 4 times; with each step we took a vow and made a promise to each other.

Real Midwest Wedding: Heidi and Andy, Chagrin Falls, Ohio

It all started with a surprise New Year’s Eve proposal in Chicago with a vintage diamond.  Andy proposed to Heidi with his grandmother’s diamond and a custom made band ten minutes before they were throwing a big New Year’s Eve party.  This particular night and family heirloom helped shape their entire wedding.  From the moment she received the ring, Heidi says she knew she wanted a “vintage romance” themed wedding.

Who, What, Where: Ceremony: St. Helen Church.  Reception: Club at Hillbrook.  Photography: the rad photographer.  Flowers: Burton Floral and Garden.  Cakes: West Side Bakery.  Brides Dress: Monique Lhullier.  Paper Products: Little Miss Press. Etsy vendors: Dandelionland (cake topper), Lo Boheme (bridal hair piece), Embroidery by Linda (hankies), Ao3 Designs (hand bags), Funkyshique (Love banner), Shadowboxer Inc. (Save the Date postcards).

Heidi and Andy wanted their wedding to be green – everything was reduced, reused or recycled in some way.  This was reflected in many purchases Heidi made throughout the year, including the Monique Lhuillier dress she bought from another bride in Minnesota.  Her shoes were Badgley Mischkas, and she had hand bags made for her and her bridesmaids by an Etsy vendor AO3 Designs.

Heidi and Andy searched for reception venues outside Cleveland, Ohio, and the moment they stepped into The Club at Hillbrook, in Chagrin Falls, Heidi says “we were smitten”.  They wanted a winter wonderland wedding, and when visiting Hillbrook, the smell of the wood burning stove and fireplaces made it feel quaint and cozy.

They went with a purple and gold theme, accented by peacock feathers.  Heidi loved the idea that peacocks represent fidelity, immortality and royalty, and wanted these characteristics to be part of their wedding day.

Heidi took on many DIY projects including: stamping hotel bags, candy bar bags, coffee staining and stamping hang tags for labels and escort cards, and browsing antique stores in Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio many weekends throughout the summer for the perfect vintage accessories.  Her mom also made all the cake stands for each individual centerpiece cake, and painted all the table numbers.  Heidi used lots of Etsy vendors products to fill out all the details, and give their reception that hand made touch.

One of Heidi’s favorite details of the day was their wedding stationary:

We also had amazing help from Andy’s friend Lis Moran, a graphic designer in Portland, Oregon, who designed our invitations, menus and programs with a Tudor Rose theme.  Lis led us to Little Miss Press who did the letterpress and calligraphy.  Just stunning invitations and calligraphy!

Heidi also has a few words of advice for brides planning their big day

I read a lot of blogs throughout the planning process and kept hearing each bride say to PLAN AHEAD!  I thought I had done a good job of that until the week of the wedding.  We still had so many little projects to do!  My advice is to plan ahead and make sure you have a vision of the day.  The details are worth it and we received many compliments.  Get your future husband involved in many different ways.  Andy was amazing throughout this entire planning process and really wanted to be involved.  He knew my vision and helped me carry it out.  Engage your family and friends, they will be there for you in the end when you cannot take it all on yourself.  The week of the wedding, my mother, Andy and I finalized each project I had taken on throughout the year.  It was stressful, but so worth it in the end.  It was the wedding of our dreams!

A big thank you to Heidi and Andy for submitting their wedding, and sharing all the lovely details of their day!
