Real Weddings: Lisa and Brendan, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

When I started looking through the photos of Lisa and Brendan’s day, I  have to say I felt a bit overwhelmed.  There were so many amazing details, beautiful colors, and every moment was captured perfectly by the talented Heather Cook Elliott.  I wasn’t exactly sure where I was going to be able to make cuts, so we definitely have more images to look at in this post than usual.  I also thought it was adorable that Brendan wrote the narrative for their day.  It’s not often that groom’s get into the act of participating in the blog posts, but I have to say I love what he wrote.  It really brings their day to life!  A big thank you to Brendan and Lisa for sharing the details of the day, and to Heather Cook Elliott Photography for the lovely images.

Even more loveliness…

From the groom, Brendan…

Our love story began in a rowdy northern Wisconsin honky tonk while throwing darts and downing beers.  Don’t all the epic ones start in such a way?  Lisa and I met through mutual friends and we were lucky enough to develop a friendship prior to falling in love.  Even before we started dating, I knew Lisa possessed a heart so remarkably pure that, no matter the circumstance, she would do anything in her power to make life better for those around her.  Lisa, meanwhile, knew there was more to me than just my dashing good looks and rugged masculinity.  For instance, I think she was really impressed with my extensive knowledge about the Milwaukee Brewers.

Seriously, looking back, I can’t envision our path to happiness unwinding any other way.  Our friendship – and the ability to laugh with one another – sparked a remarkable, unimaginable love.  Lisa and I were engaged atop Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica.  It was a memorable proposal involving horses, a pair of affable Jamaican tour guides, a waterfall, some soaked cargo shorts and a comically undersized ring – but that’s a story best told in a Jamaican accent over a round of Red Stripe.

As unforgettable as the proposal was, it pales in comparison to our wedding day.  Like anything Lisa does, she poured her heart and soul into making sure our special day would be remarkable.  As the planning progressed, and her “wedding binder” grew into a living, breathing thing that weighed as much as a small hatchback, I knew every detail would be perfect.  And indeed it was.

These are some of the words Lisa uses to describe our Anthropology-inspired wedding: eclectic, modern and country chic.  I simply call it “magazineish” because every image captured by our insanely talented photographer, Heather Cook Elliot, looks like it could be in a catalog for wedding awesomeness.  With help from our moms, we made the candy table bags, labels, name cards and ceremony programs by hand.  Not only was it fun to make the items together, it also made me feel good that my wife-to-be trusted me with things like a glue stick, scissors and paper punch.

Our table numbers were also one-of-a-kind creations as they featured our beloved Australian Shepherds Montana and Finnegan.  The dogs patiently posed for pictures taken in a tiny touristy town by our close friend Jeff Lazewski (owner of Gravidee Photography) during a vacation to the lake last summer.  We were also fortunate to have Montana and Finn brought to the beautiful Boerner Botanical Gardens in Milwaukee, WI, following our ceremony so they could share in our joy and experience all the charm a 90-degree wedding day in Wisconsin has to offer!

Lisa and I both have quite a bit of Irish coursing through our blood (we honeymooned in Ireland) so we were proud to incorporate a good deal of Celtic tradition into our ceremony.  Our Reverend Jennifer Miller was a kind and clever woman that worked hard to get to know us as people while providing us with a ceremony that matched our personalities.

For me, the most brilliant part of the wedding day was the moment I took Lisa’s hands in mine and, standing before family, friends and God, professed my devotion to the woman I love.  Following our vows, as Mother Nature continued to turn up the thermostat while withholding even the slightest semblance of a breeze, Lisa noticed the sweat dripping down my forehead and kindly handed me her something old – a white lace hankie once owned by her great grandmother – so I could wipe my forehead.  It was a simple and genuine act of kindness from my new wife, the most selfless person I’ve ever known.

Floral Friday: Purples and Plums from the Garden

There can be no doubt that purple’s and plums were a huge trend in weddings in 2011, and this color palette doesn’t seem to be stopping for 2012 either.  Libby and Matt’s wedding was no exception, but their flowers had a lovely rustic, picked from the garden feel to them.  Made up of tons of textural blooms like astible, liatrus, allium, dusty miller, and even a few lovely black centered anemones in a shade of purple to die for.  Enjoy the gorgeousness!

Real Weddings:Laura and Hollis, St.Paul, Minnesota

This week has been a super inspiring one for me with some many amazing submissions to be shared on the blog.  Today’s wedding is no exception.  When they started planning their wedding Laura says that Hollis really wanted an outdoor venue.  However she was a bit nervous, and wanted a spot with a roof, just in case.  They chose the visitors center at Como Zoo because it had a beautiful terrace overlooking the conservatory, and park, as well as being enclosed in glass to give the whole reception an outdoor feel.  They really utilized the idea of lush greenery in their decor and personal flowers.  Some of my absolute favorite details are the adorable cake with fondant succulents, and the bridesmaids purple print dresses.  A big thank you to Laura for sharing all the details from her and Hollis’ day, and to Maren Delaney Photography for the beautiful images.

From the bride…

Hollis and I met in the winter of 2006. I had just returned from teaching English in China, and was getting ready to start law school in the fall, and needed a job. I was hired as a server at a restaurant where Hollis was the pastry chef. We have lived together in St. Paul since the fall of 2007. We love traveling, trying new food/restaurants and spending time with our family and friends.  This past fall, Hollis planned a surprise trip to Chicago for my birthday. He even packed a suitcase for me! On my birthday, September 23, he proposed while we were walking down Navy Pier.

We set a date for August 27th, and then my mother was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at the end of January, so we moved the date to May 28th, hoping it would give us the chance for my mom to be there. Unfortunately she passed away in April, but we went ahead with the wedding knowing it was what she wanted. I was lucky enough to have my mother there when I found my dress.

The wedding colors were purple, green and silver/white. I can’t remember if I chose those colors or if they were inspired by the bridesmaid dresses. Once I picked the dresses, everything else started falling into place.  Being foodies, we were particularly concerned about dessert. So we decided that Hollis would make centerpiece cakes for each table. We started collecting vintage cake stands for each cake/table.

I wanted my look to be vintage. I wore a rhinestone bracelet that belonged to my late grandmother, and had a lace handkerchief that belonged to my other grandmother. We looked for weddings bands for Hollis, and didn’t find anything we were crazy about. And then my aunt told us Hollis could have my great-grandfather’s wedding band. Miraculously it fit, and Hollis loved that it had their wedding date inscribed on the inside from 1907!

I think my favorite part of the day was seeing everything come together. Everyone’s hard work and love paid off. Hopefully that didn’t sound too cheesy. I just felt so lucky to have so many friends and family from all over come to help us celebrate! We had guests from California, Denver, New York, South Carolina, Chicago and Kuwait!  Knowing that people were there to help us have a wonderful day meant the world to me. And of course marrying a wonderful man!  Another favorite part of the day was carrying on a tradition that my sorority sisters and I have started. At each wedding, there have been 5 (I think) including mine, where we all sing and dance like crazy ladies to a song called “Murder on the Dancefloor.” It’s a great girl anthem, and a fun part of Kappa Kappa Gamma weddings!

Real Weddings: Lance and Laura, Eureka Springs, Arkansas

For their wedding day Lance and Laura picked an amazing spot, The Crescent Hotel, in Eureka Springs.  I was lucky enough to see it for myself in person this fall while attending and working a friends wedding there.  It’s so full of old vintage charm, and definitely a great spot for an event.  Laura loves purple so they chose this color, and decided to use silver as an accent.  She also felt that lovebirds were a really sweet symbol of love, and thought they would be a perfect match for the outdoor garden ceremony they were having.  Their day turned out beautifully thanks to a lot of hard work from the bride, her family, and friends, so simple, bright, and fresh!  A big thank you to Laura for sharing all the details of the day, and to Natasha Lopez for her images.

From the bride…

Lance and I met at Churchill Coffee, here in Springfield, MO where Lance used to work. I was a frequent customer there. A year after Churchills closed, we reconnected on Facebook and had our first date shortly after that and were immediately in separable. For our one-year anniversary, we spent July 4th weekend in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. While we were there we played with the idea of getting married there eventually because we both thought it was such a beautiful place. So two years after out first date, we got married there at the Crescent Hotel on July 4th!

Many things were DIY projects. The save-the-dates, invitations, programs, favors, centerpieces, and flowers were all planned by me and assembled with the help of my family and friends. All paper was purchased from paperandmore.com. Most craft supplies came from Hobby Lobby and Michaels. The coffee mug favors came from discountmugs.com the bridesmaid dresses were also custom. My former roommate, Alicia, helped design them and made all of them.

Lances favorite part of the wedding day was the reception – getting to talk to everyone. It’s hard to decide, but I think my favorite part was saying our vows.

Real Weddings: Lindsey and Trebor, Pratt, KS

I’m really excited to share today’s wedding.  When I talked to Lindsey, she said that she picked her dress (only a week after the proposal) and it inspired the whole look and feel of her wedding; vintage, and romantic.  They decided to keep things casual with an intimate backyard garden affair, with tons of DIY projects, and lots of little details.  Thanks so much to Lindsey and Trebor for sharing all the details of their day, and to Heather Brulez Photography for the lovely images.

From the Bride…

My husband and I started dating when we were in high school. He is two years older than me and his last year of high school he decided to do track, and we started to talk during the track meets. I looked forward to talking to him more than doing my events. We had a great summer then he went to K-State. We did the long distance thing for two years while I finished high school. Then I also attended K-State, and finally we were in the same town, and it was great. We went on a trip to Zion National Park with some of my family. On our last night in the park he wanted to go walk to the river, and I was really confused why no one wanted to go with us. It started raining, thunder and lightning, and he got down on one knee. He probably said all the romantic things a girl wants to hear but all I remember is that he was proposing. I started crying and saying yes. It was perfect.

Because I wanted our day to be personal, we paid a lot of attention to details. My mom was so much help, she made the flower girl dresses and the head bands for all the girls and women in the wedding. We also made all the table runners. One of our biggest projects was the tulle covered balls that hung down the aisle on the chairs. In my blog obsession I had found the saying Eat, Drink, and Be Married, so I painted it with a design to place on the buffet table. I also had seen fans as a really fun way to keep guests informed and cool (well cooler), so I painted a design with our names and the date on it. We had them printed with the names of our family and the wedding party on the back of the fans.

My favorite part of the wedding was walking up the aisle toward my husband. That was the only time I almost cried, I was so happy to be marrying him. Although I did love seeing everything come together. We had planned this for almost 10 months.  For me I was so happy it was everything I wanted. The dance and the food was amazing. By the end of the night people where in the pool. Even my dad, in his wedding clothes!
