Featured Vendor: Ultrapom

I’m really excited to share today’s post because I think that the business, and it’s concept are totally fabulous.  There are tons of brides out there looking for unique items for their weddings, but they may not always have the time to go around collecting them, and maybe don’t want 50 vases sitting around after the big day.  That’s where Carolyn from Ultrapom comes in, so read below to find out more about this unique Kansas City business.

Where do you live, work, and what do you like to do for fun?

I currently run Ultrapom out of my house, which is on the edge of Downtown Overland Park.  I live 6 blocks away from where I grew up, which I am really enjoying after being away from Kansas City for over 10 years!  I love to bicycle, travel, and spend time with my husband and siblings; I especially love it when those three things are combined.  We recently did a bicycle trip along the Katy Trail.

Ultrapom is such a fun and unique business idea.  How did you come up with it, and what was the spark?

Thank you!  I am having a lot of fun with Ultrapom.  Like many professionals in the wedding industry, I was inspired by my own wedding.  I have a background in Architecture and Urban Design, so I loved working out the design details for my wedding. I was living in another country while planning my wedding, so it was frustrating that I couldn’t find items online or from rental places that I needed to get the look I wanted.  I ended up buying over 200 silver and pewter items from eBay auctions to plant succulents in.  After the wedding, I had all these silver and pewter vases to get rid of and I wondered why I couldn’t have just rented them.  Then about a year ago, I was thinking of business ideas I could do in the wedding industry while sewing lots of table runners for a friend’s wedding.  Again I thought ‘why can’t we just rent these?!?’  And THEN I thought ‘I could rent these!’  And that’s how Ultrapom was born.

Who does your business cater to? DIY brides? Other vendors? Etc?

My original focus was to cater to DIY and budget-conscious brides, but I have also met a lot of fantastic wedding planners and florists who love having a resource for different decor items.  I love dealing with the individual brides, because they are so excited about their event, but it has also been great forming continuing relationships with other vendors.

Besides renting great items, you also have a blog that shares inspiration for wedding and event planning.  You seem to love weddings, what’s your favorite thing about being involved with someones big day?

Weddings are one of the only events in our lives that everyone we love is in the same room, AND we’re making pretty major life-changing commitments in front of all of them. It’s a big deal! But most of us don’t have the budget, or, often, the desire to spend that much, to have every single thing we want. So I love helping people put together their perfect idea of how their wedding should look, helping them to set the tone and reflect themselves while keeping a sane budget and saving them time. Design is such an important part of setting the atmosphere for an event.  Putting in the effort to get it right makes all the difference in the world.

You obviously have a passion for thrifting and all things vintage.  What’s your favorite thing to hunt for?

I currently have an obsession with milk glass.  I love how clean and crisp it is, and the huge variation in patterns.  I pretty much stop at every thrift store I come across in my search for more milk glass.  In August I was driving to a friend’s lake house in the North Woods of Minnesota after dropping my husband off at the airport in Minneapolis.  Each little town I drove through had its own thrift store.  I ended up stopping at every single one of them.  By the time I got back to the lake, my trunk and backseat were full!

If you could offer words of advice to a couple planning their wedding, and considering renting items, or doing DIY projects, what would they be?

I absolutely loved my wedding, but the one thing I wish I had done differently was get a Day of Coordinator.  Make all the decisions leading up to your wedding, then let someone else put them into action, while letting your family enjoy the day too! Also, from my own experience, be realistic about how much you can do, especially in the days leading up to your wedding.  People are going to be coming in from all over for your wedding, and you want to enjoy time with them, not spend it making a two hundred foot long paper garland.  With Ultrapom Event Rental, I want to make it easier for you by being a great resource for on-trend decorations!

Featured Vendor: Coordinately Yours

I’ve worked with Julie on a wedding before, and there’s one thing I can definitely say about her, she knows how to coordinate an event.  As a floral vendor I felt really prepared and ready because of the delivery schedule, and contact info that she provided to all the vendors, which is a luxury that we don’t always get to enjoy when setting up.  Plus getting to know Julie as an industry friend has been great.  She’s so open to collaboration and creative projects, and always has ideas to share.  Here’s a little more about her business, Coordinately Yours:

Where do you live, work, and play?

After updating our Prairie Village home, I have decided it’s time for a new project.  We recently purchased a 1960′s home in Old Leawood that I look forward to renovating and making our home.

When did you first become interested in event planning, and what sparked your interest?

I was inspired by Ann Lemcke of the Art of Entertaining in St. Louis while working for her in college.  Her concept was to create food that looked as good as it tasted.  I founded Coordinately Yours in 2002 and vowed to transcend that concept into all facets of event planning.  Since each client has a unique personality, I wanted to design distinctly different weddings and events for them.  It takes considerably more time and effort to provide individualized service, but doesn’t compromise why I chose event planning.

What types of services do you offer your clients?

Wedding planning and design is constantly evolving.  Today, more brides are interested in diy options.  To accommodate, in 2010 we began offering ala carte services {venue and vendor recommendations, budget development, diy consultations} to guide them and provide only the services they truly want/need. We still offer our most coveted packages-full service coordination, day of coordination and design services as well.

Where does your event planning inspiration come from?

Most of my inspiration is derived from non-wedding and event related blogs and websites such as EmersonMade, Anthropologie, Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn.  I feel seeking outside inspiration keeps ideas fresh rather than falling into what everyone else is producing.  Of course, a lot of my concepts are “aha” moments that come in the middle of the night and I do a mock up to present to my clients.

Silly boys in tuxes

What would you say to someone trying to decide whether or not to hire a coordinator for their wedding?

Hiring a coordinator is an investment.  Not only can a coordinator’s vast knowledge save you money, but a coordinator can save you a lot of stress.  Couples invest in a great photographer to capture the moments and the details, hire a florist to make everything look beautiful, spend thousands on food, beverage, favors, entertainment, but who pulls all that together to ensure they work seamlessly? An experienced coordinator is worth their weight in gold and for a day of coordination, at the mere cost of a wedding cake.

Paper cranes, wedding details

Any words of advice you’d like to offer couples planning their big day?

Take it one step at a time.  Don’t allow magazine timelines to rush you into decisions or create a panic.  I find that those who rush to plan their wedding in the first month of engagement, usually make decisions that can be costly, they later regret, or are bored throughout the next 11 months, wishing they had something left to do.  Planning your wedding should be a fun, positive experience.

Featured Vendor: Studio Fleurette

I came across Studio Fleurette after a recommendation from Kelly at Fleur Chicago.  She told me I absolutely needed to check out the Minnesota based floral design business, and of course I wasn’t disappointed.  Danielle puts together textural bouquets and arrangements full of beautiful blooms, and pays attention to all the little details that can really make a floral designer stand out in a sea of other vendors.  I think that the best words to describe her work are “colorful” and “fresh”.  Here’s a little more about studio Fleurette:

Where do you live, work, and play?

I live in the beautiful St. Croix River Valley in Somerset Wisconsin and I serve the Minneapolis, St. Paul Minnesota metro area and western Wisconsin. I love to spend time in the Valley — supporting the local business and cottage industries here.

Have you always been interested in flowers?  What sparked your interest?

I have always been interested in flowers. I grew up with a family horticulture and plant nursery business in Wisconsin. Flowers and plants have always been a strong influence in my life. I left to pursue a Bachelor of Arts on the east coast and then returned to the Twin Cities metro to get a degree in Horticulture and Landscape Design. From there I went on to design gardens for a landscape architecture firm in Minneapolis.

When did you start your business?

I started my business in the spring of 2009. I grew even more interested in floral design while designing gardens and appreciating the principles of design. I love the instant gratification that comes from putting together color and texture in a floral design.  It takes awhile to see that come to fruition in a garden, especially in Minnesota!

What sets Studio Fleurette apart from other floral designers?

I think it is individual style. Traditionally florists have had to produce some cookie cutter designs and know something about every style. Now, I think a new market has opened up where the florist’s personality and style can really come out and be reflected in the way those flowers are composed. The people who want to go with that florist really appreciate the art they can create and I think that if a florist has a strong sense of their own style – they should feel free to perfect that. In return, you will get the type of client you will love to design for.

Any words of advice for couples choosing their florist for their big day?

Know your own style and personality as best as you can and then try to find that reflected in the work of a floral designer. If you like a modern or contemporary look, search for a florist who loves to create that. A good portfolio is important so you get a good sense of their work.

In the Details: A Sweet + Citrusy Shower Favor

Todays post is from another one of Middle of the Maps talented contributors.  I’ve been reading Ashley’s blog a+joy for awhile now, and she does adorable DIY projects, home decor, and style posts.  However she has begun steering her blog more toward DIY projects for parties, table scapes, and event styling.  Obviously all of these things go hand in hand with weddings, and she became the DIY guru for Middle of the Map.  For her very first project today she’s created some adorable shower favors that anyone could make, so here’s Ashley:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All winter my family has been eating up oranges and Cuties. The citrus peeler has become a kitchen tool we use daily. I started thinking about what a wonderful and non budget-shattering gift a citrus peeler would make for guests at parties, showers, or weddings.  Then this simple little favor idea came to me as I thought of a cute couple I know getting married in less than a week. They truly are a “couple of cuties.”
Little Cutie's wedding favor supplies.
What you will need:
  1. some pretty ribbon
  2. two Cuties per favor
  3. a citrus peeler (the one shown is from Crate and Barrel)
  4. a custom label with clever wording and a wrap around label to add to the bottom of the box as an extra design element to jazz it up a bit (made and designed by me)
  5. a gable box (the one shown is from xpedx)
  6. some paper shred packaging
Little Cuties, hand made wedding favors.
Step One: Drill a hole in the citrus peeler.  The hole will allow you to tie it to the box in a very pretty way.  I was a bit worried about drilling the hole and if there would be any complications, but the drilling was extremely easy to do.
Step Two: Put the box together.  Fill with paper shred and add the Cuties.  Close up the box.
Step Three: Thread the pretty ribbon through the citrus peeler and label.  Tie securely to the box.  Also add the wrap around label with double stick tape to the bottom of the box.
Step Four: Repeat steps one through three until all your favors are complete!
