Featured Vendor: Portraits by Lucinda

I’ve unfortunately never had the opportunity to work with Lucinda, but fell in love with her work when I saw the adorable inspiration/styled shoot she did with some other talented Kansas vendors.  I also shared Kelly and Ryan’s lovely wedding on the blog back in August.  She’s one of those vendors that just oozes enthusiasm and passion for weddings.  Needless to say, I’m a fan of Lucinda’s work, and that’s why I’m so happy to be able to share a little bit more about her and her business today on the blog.

Where to find her: Website, Blog, Facebook

Where do you live, work, and play?

I live in Olathe, KS. My husband and I just bought our first house together in May! Portraits By Lucinda is based in my home studio, but you can normally find me on photo shoots in the many parks and beautiful locations in Kansas City. If I am not working, I am most likely in my craft room sewing or crocheting away for my etsy shop. What can I say? I love to be creative! I also love spending a day off with my husband!

When did you first become interested in photography, and what sparked your interest?

If you ask my Mom, she would say I was born with an interest in photography. As a kid, I always had a camera in hand to document my life. I am so happy that my interest started at such an early age because I have all those fun memories on film.  Yes film! As a kid, I would drag my friends into pretend photoshoots.  Documenting life and the people I love has always been a passion of mine and I love that I get to do this everyday for my clients.

When and why did you decide to start your business, Portraits by Lucinda?

In my senior year of high school in 2001, I knew I wanted photography to be my full time job. To further my photography skills I went to Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA and got my Bachelor of Arts in Photography. I actually started my business in my 2nd year of college. From there it grew to a point where I was lucky enough to do it full time. I’ve now been running my own business full time for the past 5 years. I started Portraits by Lucinda because I wanted to spend the rest of my life doing what I love.  The thing I love most about what I do is capturing an individual’s personality and uniqueness. My goal is to let the subject’s personality shine through the camera’s lens and onto print.

What is your favorite subject to photograph other than weddings?

Newborn babies. There is nothing sweeter than photographing new life. I love catching those little babies in a deep snooze so I can forever capture the little works of art that they are.

What’s your favorite part of being involved with someones big day?

I absolutely love to photograph weddings! It’s amazing to be a part of one of the couples’ happiest days of their life. I love seeing how excited they are to finally become husband and wife. One of the sweetest wedding moments to capture is when the bride and groom see each other for the first time on their big day. I also love to see the different, unique details each couple adds to their wedding. There is nothing more rewarding than knowing that you are creating pictures that will be treasured by a family forever; even for generations to come. I feel honored to have the opportunity to capture the most important moments in my clients’ lives.

Any words of advice to couples trying to choose a photographer for their wedding?

Follow some wedding design blogs to help with inspiration. Make your wedding unique to you as a couple. There are so many great ideas our there and they will help make your wedding day beautiful.  Hire a day-of-wedding-coordinator! I have seen too many weddings where too much of the day’s responsibility falls on the bride and groom’s family. You and your family want to enjoy your big day, not work it.

In the end when the big day finally arrives, leave the stress behind you and enjoy the day for all it is. Some things may go wrong or not be exactly what you wanted, but most of the times these are very minor details.  Pick vendors you trust and whose work you love and know. You will want full-time professionals that will do what you hired them to do and do it well. I can’t stress how important it is to trust your vendors. Soak up that wedding day because it is one that you will remember as one of the most special days of your life.

Featured Vendor: Anna Page Photography

When I first saw Anna Wheeler’s photo work I knew that her work would be a perfect fit for Middle of the Map.  Not only are her images beautiful, but her clients are cute, and the weddings she captures are unique and have so many special details.  Today I’d like to share a little bit more with you about her business Anna Page Photography.
Where to find her: Website, Facebook, Twitter
Anna lives in her hometown of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin(about 1 hour north of Madison and Milwaukee). She mainly shoots weddings in Milwaukee and Madison, but travelsall over the state and the country for weddings. She says she’s actually never shot a wedding in Fond du Lac yet!
When I asked how she became interested in taking photos she answered: “I’ve always loved photography. I yearned to get a Hasselblad when I was a teenager mainly just as a hobby. I never considered taking photos as a career. I love to create and direct, (I’m sort of a control freak!) and just love seeing my visions become a reality. Later in life I ended up not getting my Hasselblad, but a Nikon D70.”
She shot her first wedding when her husband’s friend was getting married and had no photographer.  She thought she’d offer to shoot their wedding for free and ended up really enjoying taking photos of people in love! (By the way, she did end up getting her Hasselblad last year).
Anna officially started her business in October of 2005 in Utah. She’s glad she got her start there because the industry is really competitive and it required her to push herself to do better and improve her skills.
I asked Anna what her favorite subject to photograph is and she says the bride: “The bride is always the most beautiful on her wedding day and she knows it.”
Other than brides and weddings, she’s inspired by photographing people in general.   She also enjoys taking pictures of: places with beautiful light and clean lines, and likes playing around with illustrative works, and lately has been interested in nude photography.

Anna loves weddings, and the fact that she can get paid to photograph them is a bonus. Her favorite part of her job is photographing the people and capturing emotions and moments that her clients can relive by looking back at their photos.

“It’s pretty neat to know that my work is hanging up on their walls in their homes.”

When asked what her advice would be for couples looking for a good wedding photographer Anna says do lots of research and obviously pick a few photographers with work that you love.  Try to meet with them, and check out their sample albums.  Ask lots of questions and read their contracts.  You want a photographer that you click with because they will be spending the entire day with you.

Thanks for taking the time to get to know Anna.  Please find more of her beautiful images on her photo blog: www.annapagephotography.com/blog.

Featured Vendor: Cathy and David Photographers

When I first wrote to Cathy and David Photographers about being a part of Middle of the Map, they said they’d be happy to answer any questions, and that they were an “open book”. Their friendly and fun loving spirit shines through in their images, but they are also experts at capturing the quiet, romantic moments between a couple in love.  Here’s a little more info about this dynamic photography duo:

Where to find them: website, blog, Facebook

Cathy and David mainly work in and around the Chicago and Indianapolis are, but are open to traveling throughout the midwest, and nationwide.  They live with their cat, Charlie Anne (see her little ears), and love thinks like ethnic food, a good book, and will never grow out of playing video games.

They’ve both always had a love for photography, and took courses in college for fun.  Before their own wedding both were full time graphic designers.  While planning their own nuptials they realized they would get so much more fulfillment documenting the best day in someone’s life, and never turned back.  They officially started their business in 2007.

When I asked what their favorite subject to shoot other than weddings is, they said that weddings are their absolute favorite, but other than that they love photographing engaged couples, and also images from their impulse vacations they like to take every year.

They’ve been shooting weddings from the very beginning.  Their favorite part of being wedding photographers:

“We love being there for people on such an important day of their lives.  Being able to show them little moments throughout the day that they never would have noticed otherwise.”

When asked a few words of advice to couples picking their photographer they responded:

“Budget for your photography coverage, and extras seperately.  Starting prices can range from $2000 to well over $15,000.  Start with a minimum of 10-15% of your total budget for a photographer, and then depending on how much you value your photos go up from there.  Some brides have spent 90% of their budget on us.  Next budget for your extras…once you’ve figured out your budget you can start looking around and asking prices…if your first choice for photographer is booked for your date, ask them who they would recommend.  A lot of photographers network with each other, and are happy to refer you to someone else.”

Thanks so much to Cathy and David for sharing their insights, and beautiful work.  To see their complete portfolio, please check out their photo blog at: cathydavidphoto.com/blog
