Real Wedding: Mariko and Dan, Minneapolis, Minnesota

William Shakespeare has long been credited as the greatest writer of all time.   His work includes some of the most well known love stories ever told.  So it was no surprise that Mariko and Dan’s wedding day was inspired by the late, great storyteller.  Their love story, after all, began with the type of poetic justice most fairytales and dreams are made of.  Every detail of their Shakespearean inspired day was beautifully captured by Cadence Cornelious Photographs and the result is nothing short of breathtaking.   To look or no to look – there is no question!  Sit back, relax and be part of this beautiful narrative.

From the Bride, Mariko…

There is no way Dan and I would have ever met if it wasn’t for fate. We grew up in different states, went to school across the country from each other and I am an actor and he is a doctor.  But in one of those wonderful moments in life we magically collided.  I was working at The Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland and Dan was in his second year of Medical Residency at a Hospital in Minneapolis.  As fate would have it we both joined Catholic Match, but neither of us paid for an account.  So, when Dan sent me a smile I couldn’t reply to him.  His profile picture was of his whole family and his Mother was holding a plaque.  She had won an award for her volunteer work back home in Fargo.  For some reason I got the idea that I should download and zoom in on the plaque to see Dan’s last name.  I did, and armed with his last name and Med School, I was able to find Dan on facebook. We were pen pals while I was on the coast and when I finally returned home to Minneapolis we spoke on the phone for the first time.  Both of us called our mom’s the next day and told them we had found ‘the one’.Dan asked me to marry him on Christmas morning in front of my family and we spent the next year and a half planning from afar.  I started my masters at Yale in New Haven and Dan went to Fargo, North Dakota for work.  We spent our spring break together at Yale using the C & P letter press.  We designed and letter pressed all of our own wedding paper.  Including 2,000 coasters, 250 programs, menus, thank you cards and over 1750 pieces for our invitations.  Dan was a real trooper, he didn’t complain once.  Our theme was Shakespeare, so we used a Shakespeare quote on our invites, menus and our ring bearer brought our rings up the aisle on top of three of our favorite plays, tied together with a ribbon. The plays included the first one Dan saw me in and the first play we saw together. We wanted to honor our parents so we were married in the same chapel my folks tied the knot in 37 years ago, on his parent’s 39 wedding anniversary.  We also wanted to honor all the friends and family members who had been role models for what a strong marriage looks like, so for our first dance we invited all the married couples to join us on the dance floor. My favorite memory of the wedding was designing all the flowers with my maid-of-honor (my little sister) and my God Mother (also my aunt).  We invited my 8 bridesmaids and 8 of my closest girlfriends to help us make everything.  We sat on the floor of our living room and made all the bouquets and flower arrangements together.  My aunt made my bouquet and I carried it with my grandmother’s rosary.  I also had three close girlfriends play the violin, piano and sing for the wedding.  But my favorite personal touch was walking down the aisle to Ave Maria, which my Great Grandmother, Grandmother, Mother and Dan’s Grandma all used. Dan would say his favorite memory was going to buy a driver at the golf store with his best friend the morning of the wedding.

Real Weddings: Susan and Jason, St.Louis, Missouri

If I could pick one single word to sum up Susan and Jason’s wedding it would be classic.  From the gorgeous white bouquet, to the beautiful bride and her lace dress, the beautiful monogrammed cake, and the elegant gold and white reception decor, everything about it seems timeless and romantic.  Susan says she had always dreamed of getting married, playing dress up, and planning her special day.  Fortunately for her her older brother introduced her to Jason, and the rest is history.  A big thank you to Susan for sharing all the amazing details of the day!

From the bride, Susan…

A formal yet fun tone was set for our wedding starting with our engagement.  Jason enlisted the help of our dear friend and incredibly talented stationer, Courtney Callahan of Courtney Callahan Paper. She designed a heartfelt invitation that I found in our mailbox from Jason inviting me to a “celebration of our love…past, present and future”.  After an amazing engagement weekend last July, the wedding planning began!

We both grew up in Missouri and knew the wedding would be in my hometown of St. Louis.  My parents joined Greenbriar Hills Country Club the year I was born, it is such a special place to us and there was never a question that it would be our reception site.

To add to the magic of the ceremony, my oldest and closest friend Shannon and her husband Garrett sang a duet of One Hand, One Heart as we lit the Unity Candle. It was the most beautiful and breathtaking thing I have ever heard, I get teary eyed just thinking about how amazing they sounded (they have both sung professionally).  We chose the song because our wedding date was my aunt and uncle’s 40th wedding anniversary and they had One Hand, One Heart at their wedding. It was a meaningful and special moment in so many ways!

With an April wedding date we had an array of gorgeous spring flowers to choose from.  My vision was for a very romantic, elegant yet warm candlelit reception. I wanted lots of white flowers but left the rest of the creative decisions up to genius floral designer Barb Wehking of Bloomin’ Buckets.  My bouquet was filled with fragrant peonies, gardenias, English garden roses and stephanotis.

Both of my grandmother’s are no longer with us, but it was important that they be a part of our wedding.  Both had impeccable class and style so it was easy to incorporate their chic vintage pieces.  I wore one grandmother’s broach as a hair piece and carried her hand beaded pearl clutch.  And due to the unusually cool April temps, I wore my other grandma’s silver fox stole to keep me warm!  Additionally, my mom and her sister’s all wore the same veil of handmade Belgium lace at their weddings.  It had become too fragile for me to wear so we used it as an overlay on the cake table.  It stood out beautifully against the federal blue linen and provided a focal point as guests entered the dining room.  Another touch of family sentiment came with Jason’s mom and her siblings surprised him by singing an incredible a cappella prayer before dinner.

Since Courtney Callahan Paper did such a fabulous job on the engagement piece, we hired her to design our custom save the date and invitation suite.  She completely understood our vision and helped bring a modern twist to our traditional wedding. The paper details on our wedding day matched our invitation perfectly. She created a custom monogram and flourish that were used throughout from the programs to the menus to the signage around the reception. Other touches included monogrammed cocktail napkins and guest towels, Mr. and Mrs. signs tied to our chairs, place cards, a Thank You banner, Sparkler Sendoff and Guest Book signs and kitschy late night food labels.

Looking back now, the day brings a huge smile to my face and will continue to do so for a lifetime.  It was filled with love, elegance, unimaginable joy and most of all FUN! It was an amazing celebration that represented Jason and me perfectly.

Real Weddings: Michelle and Matt, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Michelle and Matt met through mutual friends in August 2006.  They started dating and immediately became inseparable. When deciding where to have their wedding, Michelle said it just felt right to have it in Milwaukee, where they spent their entire relationship and built such great memories.  They were so excited to invite their family and friends to join them and explore the city they love so much.  Michelle wanted their day to be simple, classic, and romantic, and chose navy with pops of green and purple as her colors.  A big thank you to Michelle for sharing all the details of her and Matt’s day, and to Carly McCray Photography for submitting the lovely images.

From Michelle…

The very first wedding detail I took care of was my dress.  I really liked the simplicity and the romance of lace.  We chose navy blue for the bridesmaid dresses and green/purple accents because I’ve always loved these colors.  I’m drawn to navy blue and green, from the clothes I wear, to our home decorations.  They’re just classic, beautiful colors.

I used Etsy.com to find unique, one of a kind, custom made items.  We purchased an address stamp that we used on our invitation envelopes, clutch purses for the bridesmaids, and our adorable cupcake toppers.

In trying to find a unique, meaningful “something old” item for my wedding day, my mother asked my grandmother if she had anything special I could use.  At my bridal shower, my grandmother gave me a beautiful handkerchief, that was a wedding gift from her mother.  My grandmother explained that she has treasured this handkerchief for 61 years, since her wedding day, September 28, 1950, and it was now mine to treasure and keep safe.  The handkerchief ended up being even more of a meaningful, special gift, as my grandparents were not able to be with us in Milwaukee that day due to complications with their health.

Matt and I share a love of good music and good food, so it was important to us that the day reflected us, and that our guests really enjoyed our special day. Everything was perfect, beautiful, and ran smoothly.  We both agree that it was the happiest and best day of our lives.  To have so many people there for you, who love and support you, and are there to celebrate your love and happiness….it was an amazing, humbling experience!

Real Wedding: Halley and Josh, Chicago, Illinois

Halley and Josh’s wedding can’t be summed up with just one word.  They have so many classic elements, but at the same time added a lot of quirky, hand made items, and mixed it up with some special family traditions as well.  I love the bright pops of coral throughout the event, their wedding invites which tell the story of their relationship (such a personal touch), and I’m of course a sucker for any event that includes pets, especially a giant Great Dane.  A big thank you to Halley for sharing all the details from the day, and to Heather Parker for submitting her lovely images.

From Halley…

Josh and I are high school sweethearts. We met the summer before my freshman year of high school. After high school, we both went to Indiana University. We traveled Europe together, and got a dog … then moved back to Chicago after graduation. We’ve been here since and we absolutely love it!

We knew we wanted a Chicago wedding. Gallery 1028 was a perfect choice. A historic piece of Chicago real estate = a unique venue for a wedding.

I cannot even tell you how long it took us to choose a color scheme for our wedding. I think I changed my mind 70 times. In the end, it took a trip to a flower market in the west loop with our florist (josh’s uncle!). We put together the centerpieces and bouquets right then and there. We stuck with all natural, but exquisite floral colors … bright coral reds and variations of peachy pinks.

My mom and josh’s mom made the desserts at the wedding (besides the cake). My mom made pizzeles (traditional italian cookies) and josh’s mom made arugala (traditional Jewish cookies). My mom also made a special Lithuanian alcohol that has been in her family for years for a special toast josh and I made.

We also did the hora and josh broke the glass at the ceremony. Both of these Jewish traditions were very important to him and his family.   For my favorite moments of the day the first would have to be the reveal when josh and I had a quite moment together to say, hi, I love you, you look great.  Second would be after the ceremony where we had some more time to talk just the two of us.  We spent this time reminding each other how excited we are, and how much we love each other.

Real Weddings: Michelle and Mike, Madison, Wisconsin

Michelle and Mike live in Alaska, but since none of their relatives and few friends live that far north, they decided it would be best to have their wedding in the “lower 48″.  Neither of them were set on celebrating their day in their hometowns, so Michelle did tons of research and happened upon Madison, Wisconsin.  They were thrilled with their choice, and hosted a beautiful destination wedding for all their family and friends with tons of activities.  I love the palette of browns, greens, and whites, and the fact that Michelle bought so many of her items for their big day from indie artists on Etsy.  A big thank you to Michelle for sharing all the details of the day, and to Jaimee C. Photography for her lovely images.

Who, What, Where ~ Ceremony, Reception, and Catering: Bellini’s Restaurant.  Flowers: Daffodil Parker.  Cake: Craigs Cake.  Party Favors (Carmel Apples):  California Caramel Company.  Photos: Jaimee C. Photography. Accessories, etc: Etsy.

From the bride…

Mike and I have known each other through volleyball for about 7 years.   Neither of us have family in Alaska so it was an easy decision to have our wedding in the lower 48, but then we had the dilemma of where…  I did not want to go to my hometown and he did not really have a hometown in the lower 48 either.  As I was searching around the web for chapels, churches,  and restaurants, Bellini’s pops up on my screen.  The pictures and reviews for this spot looked perfect, and there is tons to do in Madison, Wisconsin.

Probably one of the most fun websites I purchased from was ETSY.  I purchased all of my jewelry, some hand-painted glasses for the wedding party, my garter, shoes, and my purse as well as the bridesmaids purses.  I knew I wanted caramel apples for the wedding favors so I looked around and found the California Caramel Company and they were willing to ship and gave me a deal.

It was a very nice ceremony and the light shown through the stain glass windows just like I had imagined it would.  The restaurant is truly a gem and worthy of lots of praise.  We went and took lots of fun pictures around town, and then headed back to the restaurant for dinner and a smashing party.  Decoration for the place was merely flowers.  The restaurant is so stunning that minimal decorations are all that are really needed.
