Featured Vendor: Simply Jessie Photography

The vendors in Chicago are amazing!  Not only are there so many that are talented and passionate about their craft, but they’re also so friendly, and open to collaboration.  I had the opportunity to meet with a few of the lovely ladies who make up the Chicago wedding industry on my last trip, one of whom is Jessie Stevens of Simply Jessie Photography.  She was one of the very first vendors I approached about featuring her work on Middle of the Map.  I was so taken by her and her husbands (they’re a team), beautiful portraits.  They capture their subjects in a natural, relaxed way, while incorporating epic landscapes and beautiful details that really creative a narrative.  I’m so happy to have them on the blog today as a Featured Vendor!

Where do you live and work?

We are a husband wife duo that live and work in the heart of the cute neighborhood Lincoln Square in the great city of Chicago. It is a darling community bustling with independent shops and cafes.  During the summer months there is live music in the square, great eats and always something to do.

When did you first become interested in photography and what sparked your interest? (Jessie answers)

My dad was always the guy with a camera at every childhood event.  He would be the only parent standing up waving his arms with camera in tow at every sports events, musical performance and school dance.  I acted embarrassed but I really loved it.  He’s what started it all.  He’d say ” just one more Jess” . My parents bought my first quality camera for me as my high school graduation gift.

When did you start your business, and have you been shooting weddings from the very beginning?

We opened the doors in 2008 after six years learning from other talented photographers and being a part of as many weddings as we could.  Yes, weddings have always been my thing.  My very first job was a black and white film associate photographer back in 2002.   It was perfect to learn and take the backseat and learn while developing my own style.

What’s your favorite subject to photograph (other than weddings)?

Nature is where I glean all my inspiration from both professionally and personally.  You’ll find my computer riddled with images of all things green and in bloom. I like to take daily walks to take a deep breath away from my computer to enjoy the every day.  Beauty in the ordinary is kind of a motto for me.

What’s your favorite part of being a wedding photographer?

Hands down it is the people I have met.  I can not get over being invited into other people’s lives in such a honest way. I really love not only each couples story but seeing through the lens why they connect, why they are together, and who they want to be.  The originality of each relationship makes my mind spin with new ideas of how to communicate through imagery.

A big thank you to Jessie for answering all my questions, and for sharing her beautiful work with us!

Featured Midwest Vendor: Delack Media Group

I was totally blown away by today’s featured vendor.  Nathan has been shooting video for a long time (since he was 12 years old!), and it shows in the cinematic work he creates for his clients.  Videography can be one of the most under-valued parts of a wedding, but who could say no to owning a movie of your wedding day that can help you remember all the details forever?  Check out a few of Nathan’s videos below, and find out more about his business Delack Media Group.

Where to find him: website, blog, Facebook

Where do you live and work? I live in the western suburbs of Chicago.  Most of our wedding cinematography work is based in the Chicagoland area.  However, we travel throughout the Midwest, other domestic locations, and some international wedding destinations as well.  I love to travel.  So, of course, we’d love to capture beautiful weddings anywhere in the world!

When did you first become interested in the medium of video? What sparked your interest?
When I was 12, my dad bought a video camera for our family. I started capturing anything I could with that camera. At that point, I was hooked. At the time, we were fortunate enough to have a well equipped local public access television station in our town, where residents could take classes and learn how to use professional television studio equipment and produce television shows. I started branching out and doing my own thing (in addition to the public access TV work). One of my first paid gigs was a wedding. I remember going to the local photo/video store to buy some tapes for the camera. The clerk laughed at me, saying, “You’re going to videotape someone’s wedding and you’re how old?” I was 12 at the time, but the bride and her family couldn’t have been more happy with what I put together. I shot weddings for several years, went to college, and then worked in television news as a photojournalist in Des Moines and Chicago.

When did you start your business, Delack Media Group? I started Delack Media Group in 2009. There was a huge void missing in the wedding video market. Anyone can press record on a video camera, but it takes a true artist to capture unique angles of the day and weave it into an emotional story. I wanted to make wedding films interesting for couples…almost make it into their own movie.

What’s your favorite part about shooting someone’s wedding day?
Weddings are such a fun day for everyone involved and allow me share my creativity with others. After our clients watch their wedding film, I have couples tell me all the time, “I didn’t know that happened” or “I didn’t know you were there to capture that!” For us, it’s all about creating a completely different perspective of your day…capturing that moment and making it into something that’s visual and will be cherished for a lifetime.

If you could offer any words of advice to a couple considering videography, what would they be?
Video is such an important part of your wedding. When your day is over, what will you have to remember the vows and beautiful words that were said during your reception? Budget enough early on in your planning for cinematography. I can’t tell you how many brides have contacted us and are gushing over our work, but just didn’t budget enough. Have fun with video. We’re now producing save the date videos and concept films, where we create mini scripted movies based on your lives together. There are so many possibilities out there with video. Also, book early. Most of your in-demand vendors will get reservations far in advance. We have limited remaining availability for 2011 and we’re now booking for 2012.

Inspiration: Ariel and Dave, Summer Reception

I came across Ariel and Dave’s pictures on Jessie of Simply Jessie Photography’s blog.  What struck me instantly about them was how casual, relaxed, and genuinely sweet they felt.  I thought they’d be a perfect couple for Middle of the Map.  Ariel and Dave decided to have a private ceremony in January, but then threw a big celebration party with all their friends and family in the summer.  Since these pictures aren’t of their actual wedding day, I thought it would be a perfect post to share as “inspiration”.

I asked Ariel some questions about her and Dave’s planning process, and why they decided to have a separate ceremony and reception:

Our main goal was to keep things as simple as possible, we knew we wanted our party to be stress free, authentic, and facilite opprotunities to genuinely celebrate with our guests.  This is what led to us splitting our wedding ceremony and reception to begin with.  Having already exchanged our vows in a ceremony with our family prior to our reception, we were free to relax and enjoy celebrating with everyone we love.

Ariel and Dave are both casual by nature, but they still wanted their event to have unique flair.  Ariel spent countless hours researching Etsy and wedding blogs to get fun ideas for their decor and favors.  They both love BBQ’s so they decided to go with an outdoor celebration with lots of good food, and fun yard games to keep their guests entertained.

Thank you to Ariel for sharing some of the details of their sweet summer reception, and to Jessie for her lovely images.

Featured Vendor: Gerber and Scarpelli Photography

If there’s one thing that I love at Mid Map it’s the spirit of collaboration that comes from working on weddings.  The team at Gerber + Scarpelli photography has totally embraced this idea.  Their business is the collaborative work of a whole group of like minded photojournalists, whose goal is to capture every aspect of a couples wedding, from spontaneous and meaningful moments, to all the little details that make a couples event special.

Where to find them: website, blog, Facebook, Yelp! (psst, check out their Yelp page for a special promotion!)

Gerber and Scarpelli Photography

The Gerber + Scarpelli team all live and work in Chicago.  They have six photographers that they keep in the studio all the time.  As Melody, the groups liason for this post describes it, they were all interested in the medium of photography from the very beginning, “practically emerging from the womb with camera in hand”.  They all started with film photography and then eventually crossed over into the digital realm.

Chicago, Illinois, midwest wedding photography.

Their inspiration for shooting weddings comes from documenting all the nuances; the intimate details, significant moments, or spontaneous ones, such as the glance between a bride and groom.  It’s all about being organic and capturing what’s happening in order to tell the story of their clients wedding days.

Chicago, Illinois, midwest wedding photography.

Their business Gerber + Scarpelli was founded in 1999, and in recent years also branched out into a new venture Orange2Photo.  G+S caters to very high end, elegant, luxury clients, creating all the albums, and prints for their couples.   But the group soon realized they were missing out on a whole group of great couples.  That’s where Orange2Photo was created.  It caters to couples who still want great pictures, but may not need all the bells and whistles that G+S offers.  It allows couples to take their own digital files and create albums, prints, etc.  With both companies, they get to cover all the bases and provide amazing images to all kinds of clients, no matter what the budget.

Their favorite subject to photograph other than weddings?  Melody says probably travel photos.  In the past couple of years the gang has been to New Orleans, Belize, Guatemala, Italy, Mexico, Prague, Budapest, Norway, and Cuba.  Phew, that’s a lot of traveling!

Their group comes from a diverse background, including fashion, editorial, fine art, etc.  They’ve shot for Rolling Stone, Travel and Leisure, People, and many more.  Melody says wedding photography has been a great transition.  It allows them to do the photojournalism they love, while developing great relationships with their clients, which is also their favorite part of being in the industry:  “Being able to be with a couple during their wedding and also being around for the other big moments in their lives.  It’s so rewarding to us because our photographs will be shown again and again across  generations, bringing happiness to those that see them.”

Words of advice for couples choosing their wedding photographers: “Make sure to pick a photographer that you really blend with.  Feeling comfortable with your photographer is key.  Having personalities that mesh well will lead to more natural and organic photos.”

A big thank you to Gerber + Scarpelli for taking the time to answer all my questions and share their beautiful work.  Also be sure to check out their Yelp! page for a special promotion happening through June 1st.

Featured Vendor: Fleur

It’s turning into Chicago week here at Middle of the Map, with Jenn’s engagement session featured on Monday, and today a vendor spotlight on the wonderful Fleur.  I found their beautiful blog this past summer while searching for floral inspiration.  I was immediately obsessed, and true to floral nerd form, looked through every single post.  I began talking to owner Kelly via e-mails, and just last week got a chance to meet her in person.  Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her floral designs echo her vibrant and fun personality.

Beautiful white bouquet, peonies, ranunculus.

A Chicago native, Kelly was born and raised on the south west side.  Fleur opened 9 years ago in the adorable Logan Square neighborhood, and she currently lives in a Ukrainian Village about 15 minutes away from her shop.

Rustic bouquet, billy balls, scabiosa pods, cotton, acorns.

As a little girl, Kelly says she was surrounded by flowers.  Her mothers garden was a mystical place, and perfect for a little girl with an over active imagination.  She would sit under the apple tree and pretend she was a flower fairy that lived amongst the rose bushes.  When she was old enough she was given her own section of the garden where she grew mint, chamomile, peonies, and garden roses, and she collected magazine clippings of wildflowers and organically styled gardens.

Kelly decided to start her business at 22.  She says it was a bit of a leap into the unknown.  She’d grown tired of her job which had become corporate, and was no longer about design, “I missed the tangibility of design and was tired of just pushing papers around.  Honestly, I had no idea what I was doing other than I loved design.”

Orange freesia and button boutonniere.

When asked what she loves most about being a part of someones big day she responds: “I love that each wedding is so different and so customized.  Our clients are so creative and kind and keep me guessing and constantly striving for new ideas.  There is just no complaining when every day is filled with creativity and color.”

Centerpieces, pink, red, and white, peonies, and anemones.

Her words of advice for couples planning their wedding?  Come in with a basic idea, and really allow your vendors to share their visions.  Try as much as you can to not allow the stress to creep in, because the end result is going to be beautiful!

A big thank you to Kelly for sharing a little bit more about her business, and also for being such an awesome role model of a business woman in the wedding industry!
