Saturday Matinee: Kristin and Ford’s Kansas Wedding

For me there’s nothing like a video to really capture the essence of a wedding day.  It’s one thing to have a beautiful photo, but a film captures everything, the smiles, the tears, and all the emotions in between.  I absolutely love the idea of the couple creating video messages for each other to view on the morning of their wedding.  I also love that Kristin and Ford got married in her parents backyard, such a sweet and personal ceremony.  Here’s a little bit from Matt of MTVIDYO who shot their event:

It was an amazing day! It was in Stilwell Kansas in the parents beautiful backyard. Crazy things happened throughout the day. There’s a family joke that when you have a wedding outside they always get interrupted by ice cream trucks driving through the neighborhood. So they hired a fleet of ice cream trucks to interrupt the ceremony and deliver ice cream trucks to all the guests. At Starlight Theater while the father of the bride was giving his speech, the KU marching band bursts into the venue to surprise the bride and groom who both went to KU.

Thanks so much for sharing Matt!

Real Weddings: Jacqueline and Jake, Wisconsin

I absolutely love it when couples embrace all things midwestern for a wedding.  Sure our region of the country has tons of amazing big cities, with lots to offer couples getting married, but nothing seems more personal than a couple getting married at a location that has special meaning to them and their family.  Jacqueline and Jake were struggling with two things while planning their day.  One was the theme, and two was the venue.  Their 500+ guest list didn’t leave them a ton of options so when Jake suggested they get married on his families farm in a corn field Jacqueline couldn’t of been happier.  She, and a team of talented designers ran with the theme incorporating hay bails, cowboy boots, and other farm elements into the day.  Despite a little rain during the ceremony, everything turned out beautifully, and the mix of elegant and country provided a setting that was uniquely their own.  A big thank you to Jacqueline for sharing all the details of the day, and to Lace Hanky Photography for the lovely images.

From the bride, Jacqueline…

I met Jake in High School, in my mother’s Chemistry class.  We dated some in high school but decided that we should go our separate ways when Jake left for college, as he was a year older than me.  Fait brought us back together when we both ended up at University of Wisconsin La Crosse and the rest is history.

This wedding was truly a team effort with nearly all family members involved. As Jake and I were still in school details were worked out between wedding planners and family members as well as the two of us. Whether it was working out details of booking vendors or crafts to be completed or even the work that needed to be done on the wedding site the entire Johnson and Steinmetz family made our special day possible.

It ended up raining in the middle of our ceremony but everyone seemed to have made the best of it as we gathered for drinks before heading back out and I was reminded that it’s good luck if it rains on your wedding day.    Jake’s great Grandma Killian was able to be present and this was truly special as she passed away only a few weeks after the wedding.  My father/daughter dance was one to remember, as my father and I swing danced to Frank Sinatra’s “The way you look tonight” played and sung by my Grandma Frank Steinmetz on his accordion.

My favorite part of the day was the moment I got to see Jake for the first time, in the middle of the cornfield.  It made my heart stop and made me realize just how lucky I am to have him in my life.

Real Weddings: Heather and Wayne, Fayette, Missouri

One thing I absolutely love about this wedding is that Heather and Wayne met while living in a firehouse together.  Such a unique story, and I love that Heather is such a kick-butt woman.  As a couple these two spent a lot of their relationship enjoying the outdoors, so it was important to them that this element be a part of their wedding.  They were lucky enough to get an amazing fall day and had both their ceremony and reception outside.  My favorite pics are the ones with the fire truck.  They definitely made their special day all their own.  A big thank you to Heather for sharing all the details of their day, and to their photographer Amy Melito for her lovely images.

From the bride…

Wayne and I first met in October 2008 when he moved into the fire station. We had a great friendship that developed over the first 5 months while doing drive time in fire apparatus’ just getting to know one another.  It was March 2009 that we officially started to date and our relationship slowly grew stronger.  Over the next year and half we enjoyed going fishing, hunting and doing anything outdoors. Then on Christmas Eve in 2010 Wayne took the plunge and asked for my hand in marriage. Of course I said yes.

Once we had confirmed the engagement with our families, it was time to plan. We officially chose October 8, 2011 at Midway Farms in Fayette for everything. Our concept behind the wedding was rustic chic.  We knew we wanted our wedding to comfortable and relaxing and also include all the things we love the most, like the great outdoors.

For wedding day attire the groomsmen wore their class “A” firefighter attire, with the exception of one who was Wayne’s friend from high school in a blue tux. The bridesmaids were dressed in strapless olive green dresses with tan cowboy boots.  I wore my cowboy boots along with a firefighter garter with the dress. The garter was created by my grandmother who used old firefighter bunker gear.

For each guest we had a mason jar filled with red velvet and cream cheese icing or Italian crème cake and cream cheese icing, wrapped with raffia and attached were wooded thank you tags and small wooden spoons. We found it easier to have the cakes done this way, and I loved this option since for most weddings I never get around to eating the cake.

The event went off great, as we danced throughout the night under the stars and enjoyed the beautiful weather!

Real Weddings: Amanda and James, Liberty, Missouri

When looking for a spot to have a wedding there are so many things for a couple to consider.  Go for a spot with sentimental meaning, or something that’s just plain gorgeous?  Whether it’s in the backyard, an amazing downtown loft, or a historical location , the options are endless.  However some of my favorite spots are the ones that have a story, and a special place in the couples hearts.  For Amanda and James that was Belvoir Winery.  Not only is it right next door to her mom’s house, but it’s got so much history.  Also called “The Odd Fellow’s Home, over the years it’s served every purpose under the sun including a school, orphanage, hospital, and boarding home for migrant workers during the depression.  Amanda says it’s also rumored to be haunted.  It’s easy to see that this spot has so much character, and since the couple wanted their wedding to have a vintage feel it was perfect.  Amanda is also an Etsy bride, utilizing the hand made website to find tons of goods for her wedding including linens, her garter, and much more (see “Who, What, Where” for complete list).  A big thank you to Amanda for sharing all the details of the day, and to Heather Brulez Photography for her lovely images.

From the bride…

James and I met while in college. I was at a party for my sorority, and he was introduced to me by a friend. During college James worked in a bar. The night before our anniversary he ended up hurting his back moving kegs. He had plans of doing the traditional proposal and getting down on one knee, but was not able to do so due to his back.  So he put the ring under my bed so that he could sneak into my bedroom in the morning. He woke me up really early and proposed. My mom knew that he was going to do it so she was up waiting for me to come show her my ring.

I love billy balls and picked the color yellow based on that. The centerpieces at reception had a mix of black and white flowers at some tables, and others had yellow flowers, incorporating wine bottles with custom labels as table numbers. For DIY projects we made candles for favors, and we also cut wine corks to hold the place cards. James made some really cute signs to put on the highway.

My something borrow/blue/new/old was from my garter I got on Etsy. The lace is borrowed from a dress, the silk is blue, the antique brooch is old, and the silk is brand new. The money spent on the garter also went to help women who were victims of human trafficking. It was really beautiful.

I was very close to my grandpa but he passed away sometime ago. We had our first dance to “Fly me to the moon”. It was my grandpa’s favorite song. It made me feel like he was a part of the wedding. My favorite part of the wedding was right after the ceremony while we were taking pictures. It really seemed like all of the stress and nervousness was gone for both of us.

Real Weddings: Julie and Zack, Chicago, Illinois

Creativity, and DIY touches are something that this wedding has in spades.  Not only does it create a unique feeling for the whole event, but it also reveals the personal style of this adorable couple.  Julie and Zack were excited to be a part of Middle of the Map Weddings, and were so generous in sharing all the details of the hard work they put into making their event so beautiful.

Who, What, Where ~~ Ceremony and Reception: 63rd Street Beach House. Photography: Kate Miller Photography.  Fresh Flowers: A New Leaf.  Caterer: Jewell Events Catering. Photobooth: Magnolia Photobooths.

Zack and Julie met in high school in the northwest “burbs” of Chicago, and starting dating their sophomore year, in 1996.  They’ve been inseparable ever since, and a few years ago, while vacationing in the Bahamas, Zack got down on one knee during dinner and proposed.  They knew right away that they wanted a home town wedding.  They love to entertain (they’re always hosting get togethers at their home for friends and family), so they wanted their day to feel like a fancier version of a summer dinner party.

Zack and Julie wanted an outdoor location for their wedding.  They decided to check out the 63rd Street Beach House on the Chicago Southside, and it was love at first site.  It had all the qualities they were looking for: right on Lake Michigan, unique, memorable, and a Chicago landmark that will always be open for them to come back and visit for years to come.

The majority of the flowers were made of fabric.  Julie is a hotel interior designer, and had lots of samples from her company cleaning out it’s design library.  She translated templates from Paper Source for the fabric, and along with her mom, and sister, made roughly 600+ flowers.  The boutonniere’s were made out of leather, and the only live flowers were the bouquets carried by the bride and her bridal party.

Julie loves the combination of mixed metals, such as silvery grays, warm golds, and coppers.  She chose gray dresses from J Crew for her bridesmaids, and gray Calvin Klein suits for the men.  Her dress was a Jenny Yoo design, and the necklace came from Francesca’s Collection.

The only formal photos the wedding party took were in front of Wrigley Field.  Zack and Julie are both huge cubs fans, so these pics really made their day.

The fabric flowers were incorporated into centerpieces along with glass hurricanes and candles at the reception.  Other DIY project included love wands for the kids (but Julie says they were a hit with young and old alike).  Smooth black pebbles with guests names written in silver acted as escort cards.

Julie ordered the cardboard frame with honeycomb filler from the website “Uncommon Goods”.  Guests wrote messages on slips of paper, then rolled them up and slipped them in a pocket.  Julie and Zack put the message board in a large shadow box frame that hangs in their home, and they can go back and read all the sweet wishes everyone wrote for them on their special day.

Julie’s mom, and big sister Shannon (also her maid of honor) baked and decorated all the cupcakes for the reception.  The flavors they created included salted caramel, chocolate mocha, and orange creme.  They also created the cupcake stand to display their creations.

They used Jewell Catering and Events for their food, which Julie says was amazing.  They also served a signature cocktail, spiked sweet tea, which was a big hit with their guests.

Julie said they decided to break with tradition, and didn’t do a bouquet or garter toss, or cake cutting.  However they did do their first dance, which was to John Lennon’s “Woman”.

A big thank you to Julie and Zack for sharing all the details of their inspiring day with us.  They’re a great example of how hard work and DIY projects can pay off to create an amazing, personal day.  Also thanks so Kate Miller Photography for the submission!
