Real Weddings: Lauren and Matt, Chicago, Illinois

We experienced quite the heat wave this summer in the midwest (hard to imagine now), and Lauren and Matt’s wedding was right in the midst of one of the hottest months of the year.  But they didn’t let that put a damper on their big day.  Two things really stood out to me about this wedding: One, the gorgeous flowers, and two, the space.  I’ve never visited Salvage One in person being a Kansas City girl, but I’ve only heard good things about it.  As their photographer Lizz put it, “The location lends itself to a more relaxed couple with a relaxed feel.”  A big thank you to Lauren for sharing all the details of their day, and to Lizz at Studio Starling for her lovely images.

From the bride…

Matt and I got married in July of 2011. Because we met and live here, and because it was equal distance between Matt’s family in Kansas City, and my family in Detroit and Cleveland, we decided to host our wedding in Chicago. Very soon after we got engaged, we started scoping out venues, and we immediately fell in love with Salvage One, an architectural salvage store and event space on the west side of town.

Our florist, Siddhanta at Roscoe Blooms / Gratitude Heart Garden helped narrow down our color and flower choices. Matt, the typical guy, wanted greens and white only, but I was able to talk him into a bright blueish-purple and yellow for the bouquets, and natural greens and whites for the tables.

As for entertainment and our general wedding timeline, we wanted to make sure the emphasis was on fun! We nixed a few formal wedding traditions and made every effort to get everyone on the dance floor for at least a couple of hours before the reception was over.

Matt and I both loved our photographers from Studio Starling and we really enjoyed our twilight photo shoot on the roof at Salvage One. It was nice to sneak away from everyone and have a quiet moment, not to mention the gorgeous pictures of the Chicago skyline. My other favorite moments were the reading by our close mutual friend during the ceremony, the few minutes after the ceremony when the bridal party shared a drink and shook off all the nervousness, and of course all the dancing. After the DJ played the last song, our friend stole her microphone and led approximately 40 of our closest friends in serenading us to “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling.”

Real Weddings: Heather and Kyle, Holland, Michigan

Today’s couple had an unconventional relationship from the start.  According to Heather they skipped the engagement altogether, and instead opted to buy a beautiful house.  She sort of just started planning the wedding and they set a date.  She knew she wanted something timeless that she could look back on and have no regrets, so she kept everything classic and neutral.  Their day was intimate and was all about being with their closest family and friends, and you can definitely feel that when you look at their amazing pictures by Bryan and Mae.  Thanks to Heather and Kyle for sharing their day, and to Bryan and Mae for the lovely images.

From the Bride

It all began in High School…well not really but my now Mother-in-Law was my High School aerobics teacher and all us girls in the class would giggle, over a photo of her son….This was Kyle.  Little did I know five years later I would meet him in a bar.  It was weeks of talking on Myspace and the phone and finally I asked him “So I guess you not going to ask so I will..do you want to do coffee or something sometime? Or are you really just being nice this whole time and your not interested?”  He was shy, and made some excuse on how I beat him to the punch.  We went on our first date and that was it.  I fell head over heals for him fast and hard.   Four years and a beautiful baby girl later we were getting married.

My girls wore dressed that they picked out, because I wanted them to not spend an arm and a leg on a dress they would never wear again.  I only gave them the color choices and told them to pick what they wanted.  We wanted it to be comfortable and casual in a way so the guys wore dress pants, shirts with ties, and vests.  This was also nice because then they were not sweating to death in the heat of August!

My favors where seed paper.  Now for those who don’t know what that is, its paper with wild flower seed in it.  You just need to plant the paper in a pot (just like regular seed) and water daily and in a few weeks you will have wild flowers growing!  My flower vases for my centerpieces were my Grandmothers canning jars.

We had a family only wedding in one of the first churches in our town.  The church is only open in the summer due to the fact that it is not heated.  It has big shutters that you lift of to opens up the whole place!  It is also small…so it didn’t look silly with only the 50 or so guest we invited.  The one thing I was a stickler for though was the something borrowed something blue, something old and something new.

Borrowed: My Grandmother let me borrower her pearl necklace that my grand father gave her on their wedding day (over 50 years ago) Blue: I purchase a vintage looking (it was brand new that someone had made to look vintage) blue Lacey handkerchief to use instead of Kleenex.  Old: My mother gave me as an early present, diamond earrings she had made from her old anniversary ring.  New: My veil!  My Best friend and Maid of Honor Shandra made my veil and hair piece.  It was amazing!

The best moment (beside actually marring my best friend) was dancing with my Grandpa for my father/daughter dance.  Besides Kyle he is the most important male figure in my life and I couldn’t LOVE him more!

Real Midwest Wedding: Emily and Matt, Kansas City, MO

My husband and I are celebrating our three year wedding anniversary on August 30th, so I thought it would be fun to share our wedding on the blog to celebrate.  I did a lot of DIY projects, and it was also my very first experience doing flower arranging for a wedding.  When I was planning things I hadn’t gotten into blogs yet, reading them, writing them, etc. so most of my inspiration came from magazines like Martha Stewart Weddings.  I have to say that since I now work in the industry I could’ve planned our wedding about a million times over using different projects, and decor, as I am constantly being inspired by all the resources out there.  However we had an amazing day, filled with family and friends, and everything turned out just how we wanted, festive and fun for all our guests!

Who, What, Where ~ Ceremony: St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Reception and Catering: The Hobbs Building/Feasts of Fancy. Photography: Matt Nichols. Dress: Jocelyn Himes.  Flowers: emmy-ray. Cake: Creative Cakes. Videography: Carson Swisher.

Matt and I met right at a friends house the summer before we were heading off to college in 2000.  We started dating that summer, and didn’t know where it would go.  Once the school year rolled around we decided to keep dating long distance, he was in Nashville, and I was in Springfield, MO.  It was tough, but we were still getting to know each other through our hour (or sometimes longer) phone chats.  He eventually transferred to school in Rolla, MO and we were only an hour away.  We dated all through college and then once I moved back to Kansas City as well.  In 2007 he proposed and of course I said yes.  By the time we got married, we’d been together for 8 years!

Before Matt proposed to me I had never given all that much thought to my wedding dress, but I knew I wanted something that was unique.  I tried on a few gowns, all of which were lovely, but none really spoke to me.  I decided to have my dress made by Kansas City designer Jocelyn Himes.  I was so happy with the way it turned out, and especially loved the light blue flowers and sash detailing she added.

My earrings and necklace were a gift from my parents, and the flower I wore in my hair was a vintage brooch I bought on eBay and painted a soft pearl white to match my dress.  My grandmother made my garters (she used to design wedding dresses, veils, and accessories), one to keep and one to toss.

The very first bridal bouquet I ever designed was my own.  I wanted the colors of the flowers to be bright and cheerful, so we used a red, orange, and pink color palette.  The butterfly brooch was my something old, and borrowed, since it used to belong to my late grandmother, and was borrowed from my cousin (and bridesmaid).

I screen and relief printed all of our invitations.  I wanted the feel of something hand made, and since I graduated with a BFA in Printmaking it made sense for us to do our own invites.  I took the design from the invites and also made programs for the ceremony.

Our ceremony took place in the church I’d attended every Sunday since I was born, and also where my parents were married.

All of the bridesmaids wore different color dresses in magenta, dark and bright red, and poppy orange, with a royal blue sash to accent (and both mothers wore blue dresses to coordinate) and silver shoes, with jewelry I designed and made for them.  We also had a groomsmaid and a bridsman in our wedding party.

For the reception I collected milk glass and clear vintage glass containers for the centerpieces, which were a mix of the warm colors with a little blue delphinium mixed in.  I also sewed table runners for all the tables, and made a canopy of fabric and lights to drape over the dance floor, thanks so some specs provided by Blue Bouquet. We hung bright red chinese lanterns throughout the room to add a little bit of a festive feeling.

Our cake design was inspired by Martha Stewart Weddings.  It was hot pink with white cherry blossom fondant flowers cascading all the way down it.  We toasted with vintage glasses that belonged to my late grandmother.  Strawberry cake is my absolute favorite, but I know some people don’t like it, so we had strawberry cupcakes made to serve as well as our cake.

For favors we gave our guests fans so they could be cool in the warm summer evening, and also had a photo booth, which was incredibly popular.  We also got a guest book with pictures from the booth and messages they wrote inside.  I love going back and looking at it, probably even more than our wedding album.

We loved so many parts of our day, but one of our favorites had to be the speeches.  My dads was so heartfelt, Matt’s brothers/best man’s was short, but so sweet, and my sisters both stole the show.  My sister Lainey cried the entire time, and there probably wasn’t a dry eye in the house, and then my youngest sister Tara livened things back up with her speech full of jokes.  Everyone was roaring with laughter, and can you believe she was only nine years old at the time?  Also my favorite photo from our day was a shot we took in the middle of Main Street.  Matt Nichols had us jump out of the trolley on the way to the reception and we took pictures right there in the median.  Our moms were freaking out, but it’s a great memory for sure, and a beautiful shot of the city we love in the background.

Thanks so much for letting us share our day with you guys.  I’m so lucky to be married to such a kind, generous, and intelligent guy.  So happy anniversary Matt, I can’t wait to see what adventures the coming years have in store for us.

Real Midwest Wedding: Kim and Rob, Chicago, Illinois

With 4th of July weekend coming up it’s only appropriate that today’s wedding be red, white and blue.  Rob and Kim met at college, and definitely didn’t follow the rules.  They were together for 8 years and Kim was getting impatient.  She decided that the 4th of July was her “cut off” date.  They love holidays, but the 4th of July especially, so they always have a party.  During the party, Kim heard a whistle, and Rob called her over in front of everyone.  It was a surprise proposal and everyone started snapping pictures as he asked her to marry him.  They decided to set the date for their wedding one year later on their favorite holiday.

Kim says that if they hadn’t had a 4th of July wedding she has no idea what colors she would have chosen.  They decided to substitute a light blue in for a traditional royal or navy.  She says that some people teased them about having a 4th of July themed wedding, but since the day was special to them as a couple they didn’t care!  The bridesmaids wore adorable blue dresses from Melissa Sweet with sequin trim.  So cute!

Rob and Kim gave all of the men (including their 2 year old nephew, and dads) in their wedding party black converse to wear the day of the wedding.  They wanted to keep things fun and casual, and thought the shoes were a perfect way to do it.

Kim and Rob are true Chicagoans.  They both grew up there, and so they had a tough time narrowing down where to take all their pictures.  They decided to hit all the major landmarks, and ended at the Planetarium.  This is one of their favorite spots because they spent many a weekend tailgating their before Bears games. Kim says they have different taste on lots of things, but one thing they both love is football.

Kim says they loved the beautiful old church where they got married, and that the organ music was amazing and made it all super memorable.  For their send off they had guests throw white rose petals.

Their reception was on the 14th floor of the hotel so they had an amazing view of downtown Chicago.  Kim labeled each table with DIY shadowboxes that each had the name of a place significant to the couple.  In the frames she included pictures and little items that represented each spot.  They also had some of their talented friends design escort cards that looked like Bears tickets, as well as their Save the Dates.

When I asked Kim what their favorite parts of the day were she had a few.  One was right before the reception when her and Rob snuck upstairs to the hotel room and took pictures jumping on the bed.  Another continued their football theme, and all of the wedding party put on Bears jersey’s before getting introduced at the party.

Rob and Kim choreographed their own first dance.  They started out slow and ended it fast.  She said that Rob isn’t the best dancer, but he did a great job, and their guests loved it!

A big thank you to Kim and Rob for sharing their day with us, and to Kara Schultz for her beautiful images.  So happy to have a fun and free spirited holiday celebration like your guys on the blog!

Floral Friday: Warm and Cool

I was first drawn to this wedding because of the fun and amazing cake by Andrea of Classic Cakes.  She made fondant replica’s of the fabric and button flowers the bride used to decorate at the reception.  So cute!  However once I took a look at the flowers I knew I had to have it to share on Middle of the Map.  With a contrasting hot and cool color palette, and a beautiful mix of unusual and textural blooms, these flowers are a floral designer, and any brides dream.
