Real Wedding: Kelly & Melissa, Michigan

Today’s wedding has us dreaming about warmer weather and summer vacations by the lake.
For Kelly and Melissa, Grosse Ile, Michigan, a small island south of Detroit, provided the perfect backdrop for their wedding.  It is also home for much of Melissa’s family and where Kelley Jordon Photography set the scene for the gorgeous images that follow.  Friends and family from all over the map joined together on the island, on this warm summer day, to be a part of their ceremony and watch their love set sail.  Two of the bride’s cousins served as wedding planner and graphic designer, ensuring that every last detail perfectly accentuated their personalities and plans – and just look at the bride’s gorgeous dress!  Wow!  We love everything about this summer-fun event and want to thank Kelley Jordan Photography and the amazing couple for sharing it with us and with you, our always amazing readers!

From the bride, Melissa…

Kelly arrived home from work Sunday night over Memorial day weekend with not one, but two big surprises. As he tentatively entered the loft with my dream puppy wrapped in his arms, tears began streaming down my face when I saw them. As he dropped to his knee, I thought he had dropped something, but instead he was asking me to be his wife with the ring tied around the puppy’s neck.

We decided to get married on Grosse Ile, Michigan, a small island south of Detroit where my family lives. My two fabulous cousins, Nicole Stone, wedding planner extraordainarie, and Jamie Stone, graphic designer, planned and made my wedding a beautiful reality. My
cousins hand-made all of the invitations, centerpieces and reception decor.  I’m forever indebted to them for doing this as I live in Atlanta and it just wasn’t feasible to do this without them!

The ceremony was at St. Anne’s chapel, where I was baptized at 6 months old, and the reception was around the corner at Bishop’s Cottage B&B. The most special photo locations were my grandparents beautiful 1940′s home, garden and boating dock. I also gave Kelly a plane propeller tie pin the day of the wedding as a surprise to remember his grandparents that are no longer with us. Kelly’s life was greatly influenced by his maternal grandmother, Willie Jewel Peacock Kelly, who was a WASP (Women’s Air Force Service Pilot) in WWII. In 2010 she along with the other WASPS were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor which is housed in the Smithsonian.  During Kelly’s formative years he dreamed of being a pilot and while still in high school he earned his pilot’s license.

My favorite part of the day was spending time with family friends who traveled from Massachusetts, Chicago, Texas, Georgia, California, Florida, etc to be there! My favorite moment was with Kelly though in the secret garden (first picture).

Inspiration: Eclectic Hay Loft Wedding

Spring is definitely all around us, but I couldn’t see any reason not to share one last winter inspiration shoot, especially one as lovely and detailed as this one.  Shot by the talented Erin Johnson, and styled by Carly of Girl Friday (a wedding PR business), this post is packed full of so many great ideas.  Here’s a bit more from Erin about the shoot, and it’s inspiration:

I asked Carly, from Girl Friday, to set-up an inspiration shoot. I told her I just wanted to show up and be suprised. Well, I was surprised alright! She called on some of our favorite people in our area…and pretty soon it was getting so big she split the shoot into two themes with two sets of models! This is the first theme. We’re calling it “eclectic hay loft wedding.” It’s inspired by Carly’s love of books, fonts, black and white stripes and her pug, Hank.

Inspiration: Black and White Wedding Dress

Leigh Miller submitted a midwest engagement session to me recently, which I’ll soon be sharing on the blog.  However while looking at her site I was really drawn to the wedding of Jessica and Matt.  Unfortunately it’s a coastal event, so I couldn’t use it as a real midwest wedding.  However Jessica’s dress is just too beautiful not to share.  Sure there are plenty of ways to bring colors other than white into your ensemble, but I think she did it in such a unique way.  The black embroidery, and the beautiful flowers on her gown are delicate and ethereal, and fit their outdoor ceremony.  Plus I love her fluffy top knot!

Real Midwest Weddings: Jenny and Kelly, Kansas City, Missouri

Today’s wedding was shot by my sweet friend Melissa Lin Ellis right in Middle of the Maps hometown, Kansas City.  Kelly and Jenny wanted to keep their wedding classic in aesthetic, but laid back and non-traditional in tone.  They chose a clean, simple, black and white color palette, and a rustic, urban event space.  Using the creativity and resources they had, like their talented friends who did the flowers, cupcakes, and entertainment, the couple was able to plan a beautiful and budget friendly wedding.

(owned and operated by Kelly).  Photobooth and 8mm video: John Eastlund (friend of the couple).  Dress: Laura’s Couture Collection.

Kelly and Jenny met 5 years ago.  Jenny was just finishing up grad school, and Kelly was working but also kept a part time job at Best Buy.  Jenny didn’t have a TV and decided one day to go buy one.  She knew nothing about TV’s, but fortunately had a very helpful salesman to help her pick one out, as well as try to cram it into her Jetta.  The salesman turned out to be Kelly, and he asked her out.  Now the couple jokes that Jenny bought the TV with a “lifetime warranty”.  They call it the “TV of love”.

Jenny and Kelly wanted to keep their day laid back and non-traditional.  The bride skipped wearing a veil, and the couple even included their dog, Charlie Brown in the ceremony, tux and all.  Jenny’s “something old” was a handkerchief from her 93 year old grandmother, which she wrapped around her bouquet.

The couples ceremony was at the Pilgrim Chapel, a quaint and intimate non-denominational little church in Kansas City.

For the reception Jenny and Kelly knew they definitely wanted something urban and rustic.  They shopped around and found the Arts Incubator Event Space, in the Crossroads district of Kansas City.  Not only was it budget friendly, but Jenny really liked the fact that it’s a non-profit organization that helps up and coming artists.

A lot of the decor at the reception was do it yourself.  Jenny collected vases from local antique stores, and also gathered vintage frames which she put their engagement pictures in and hung above the guest book table at the Arts Incubator.

Real Weddings: Bethany and Dylan, Coffeyville, Kansas

When Kimberlee of Simple Splendor Photography sent me an e-mail submitting Bethany and Dylan’s wedding I had no idea what I was in for. One click through to her blog later, and I was in love. Not only is their wedding beautiful at first glance, a closer inspection reveals all the little tiny details that went into making their day uniquely theirs. Plus there were many hand made and DIY projects, which always add that little extra touch of love to an already amazing day.

Who, What, Where ~~ Ceremony and Reception: Cedar Bluff Camp.  Photography: Simple Splendor.  Cake: Laurel Street Bakery.  Dress: Abelina’s Bridal.  Flowers: DIY by mother of bride and her aunts.

Bethany had a vision for what she wanted her wedding to look like before Dylan popped the question.  Once he asked her, she went straight to her mom, a talented seamstress to help her make her grand vision come to life.

Bridesmaids wore beautiful black and white dresses from Mori Lee.

Part one of Bethany’s “grand vision” for the ceremony was a black and white striped tent, and aisle runners, both of which her mom created, along with adorable black and white striped flags monogrammed with a red sequin D and B.  She also sewed the sweet flower girl baskets, and ring bearer pillows.

Bethany’s beautiful bouquet, and those of her bridesmaids were made of blush garden roses she ordered online from fiftyflowers.com.  Her mother and aunts assembled them the night before the wedding, tying each with a simple white bow.

At the reception guests were greeted with a welcome table full of vintage mason jars and refreshing pink lemonade.  Manila tie tags stamped with the couples initials let guests label their drinks to avoid mix ups.  There were also lawn games like croquet, horseshoes, and cornhole for entertainment.

A home made photo wall, using the same stripe motif and a gold vintage frame, made for some fun shots of the wedding party and guests.  What a great idea!

Besides being a talented seamstress, Bethany’s mom is also super thrifty.  She loved the idea of using vintage finds from flea markets and rummage sales for the decor.  She collected all the milk glass bud vases for the reception tables, which they filled with white taper candles, and roses.  Mismatched white dinner and cake plates were also collected, and then later re-used by a friend for her wedding.  Burlap covered the tables, and paper doilies added a little extra touch or romance.  Once all the candles were the lit the effect was stunning.

The cake knife and topper were both family heirlooms that Bethany’s parents used on their wedding cake. They’ve been married 44 years and won the “Anniversary Dance” at the reception.

After lots of dancing it was time for a send off with sparklers and fireworks.  Bethany and Dylan said that their family, and especially Bethany’s mom, were instrumental in pulling their celebration off.  Their so grateful for everyones hard work and sacrifices that made it all happen.

A big giant thank you go Bethany and Dylan for sharing all the details about their beautiful day, and also to Kimberlee of Simple Splendor Photography for her submission!
