We experienced quite the heat wave this summer in the midwest (hard to imagine now), and Lauren and Matt’s wedding was right in the midst of one of the hottest months of the year. But they didn’t let that put a damper on their big day. Two things really stood out to me about this wedding: One, the gorgeous flowers, and two, the space. I’ve never visited Salvage One in person being a Kansas City girl, but I’ve only heard good things about it. As their photographer Lizz put it, “The location lends itself to a more relaxed couple with a relaxed feel.” A big thank you to Lauren for sharing all the details of their day, and to Lizz at Studio Starling for her lovely images.

Matt and I got married in July of 2011. Because we met and live here, and because it was equal distance between Matt’s family in Kansas City, and my family in Detroit and Cleveland, we decided to host our wedding in Chicago. Very soon after we got engaged, we started scoping out venues, and we immediately fell in love with Salvage One, an architectural salvage store and event space on the west side of town.
Our florist, Siddhanta at Roscoe Blooms / Gratitude Heart Garden helped narrow down our color and flower choices. Matt, the typical guy, wanted greens and white only, but I was able to talk him into a bright blueish-purple and yellow for the bouquets, and natural greens and whites for the tables.
As for entertainment and our general wedding timeline, we wanted to make sure the emphasis was on fun! We nixed a few formal wedding traditions and made every effort to get everyone on the dance floor for at least a couple of hours before the reception was over.
Matt and I both loved our photographers from Studio Starling and we really enjoyed our twilight photo shoot on the roof at Salvage One. It was nice to sneak away from everyone and have a quiet moment, not to mention the gorgeous pictures of the Chicago skyline. My other favorite moments were the reading by our close mutual friend during the ceremony, the few minutes after the ceremony when the bridal party shared a drink and shook off all the nervousness, and of course all the dancing. After the DJ played the last song, our friend stole her microphone and led approximately 40 of our closest friends in serenading us to “You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling.”
