Featured Vendor: Munster Rose

I found Munster Rose through the Minneapolis Independent Wedding Association’s vendor page, and it was love at first site.  Jackie’s florals are bursting with color, beautiful texture, and amazing details.  I also love the fact that Munster Rose is a mother daughter team, just like my own floral design business.  When I contacted Jackie about being a Featured Vendor on Middle of the Map, her personality exactly matched her flowers, vibrant and warm.  I’m really excited to share her business with you today, so read below to see more of her flowers and find out about Munster Rose.

Where to find her: website, blog, Facebook

Where do you live, work, and what do you like to do for fun?

The answer to all three is my home in Minneapolis. I live in South Minneapolis just a few blocks from the Mississippi River and Minnehaha Water Falls. It’s a great neighborhood for young families, small businesses, and folks who want to live in the city while still having perks like a parking and a backyard. Munster Rose is operated out of my home which is coincidentally my favorite place to be. I have a degree in Interior Design and have always thought that creating a space that breeds creativity, while making you feel safe and comfortable is key to any good work/home environment. I like that our clients get to see my design background “in action” when they visit our space. Munster Rose isn’t just about good floral design, it’s about good design. Hopefully that’s conveyed when people meet us here! Plus, my favorite way to spend free time is with my hubby and our dog. Working from home makes that so much easier. My dog lays at my feet all day. How great is that?

When did you first become interested in floral design, and what sparked your interest?

I realized floral design was for me after working briefly in the Interior Design field. I had been working in a flower shop while pursuing Interior Design and realized I was much happier at my part-time floral gig than at my full-time-bill-paying-real job. I like working with my hands, and the instant gratification that comes form working with flowers. It doesn’t take years of planning, and permits, and subcontractors, and third party vendors like Interior Design. It’s about an actual relationship between you and your client.

When and why did you decide to start your business, Munster Rose?

I actually started my business a bit sooner than planned. It was a goal I had set for myself years ago, but didn’t think I would put things into action until after I had kids. But, after moving back to the Twin Cities and talking to other women who owned their own business, I decided that now was as good a time as any to get things rolling. I knew I wanted to do it, I knew I’d be in Minnesota forever, and after working in the industry for nine years I was equipped with the skills and know-how to venture off on my own. When my mom agreed to partner with me and share the workload, the decision was a no-brainer. It’s not an easy job, but it’s so nice to say “I did that! It’s mine!”

What’s your favorite thing about working with a couple to create flowers for their wedding day?

My favorite thing about every couple is how unique they are. (I know that sounds cheesy and totally cliche, but it’s true.) I like that you start the process as total strangers and throughout the course of the planning, you feel like you “get” each couple and their vision. A wedding is so telling in that way. It’s a complete reflection on each couple’s personality, lifestyle, family, history, everything. I like that.

Any words of advice for couples trying to choose a floral designer for their wedding day?

Please, oh please, choose a florist that you “click” with. Floral design is such a peculiar field. It’s probably the only time in life you’ll dish out tons of dough without knowing exactly what you’ll get. Working with a fresh, perishable product is tricky! You really need to select someone who gets your vision and can interpret your style and design. If this means paying slightly more for one florist vs. another– do it!  Definitely select a florist that you trust to execute your ideas– whether it be vintage/chic, DIY, or super fancy glam– you want someone who can bring their own ideas to the table and help to further your wedding vision.
