Real Wedding: Shelley and Greyson, Wichita, KS

Today’s post isn’t a traditional wedding, but rather an elopement story and reception.  Shelley and Greyson met while watching basketball games during March Madness, dated for two years before getting engaged, and got married one year later.  They both love to travel to the beach, and started talking shortly after their engagement about a destination wedding.  After traveling to Mexico to celebrate their engagement and scout a few resorts in Playa del Carmen, they started planning.  However they quickly realized that having their immediate families at the destination wedding was going to be nearly impossible with everyone’s different schedules.  After weighing other options, they decided that getting married on the beach remained important to them so they decided to elope, and then have a big bash with their family and friends back in Kansas.  Shelley said getting married on the beach, just the two of them was intimate and relaxing, not to mention beautiful.

The color purple has always been one of Shelley’s favorites, so she knew she wanted to use it in any way she could for the wedding.  She found fabulous purple heels that she couldn’t wait to wear with her dress.  Purple orchids are her favorite flower, and they grow everywhere in Maui were they were married.  Her bouquet for the ceremony was a mix of three types of purple orchids, and they were also used to decorate the reception.  Greyson picked accent colors of lime & red.

The couple wanted their guests to have a great time at the home reception, so they decided to do a cocktail party reception.  They used a great wine bar in the Old Town district of Wichita as the venue.  For the signature cocktail they had a “Mint to be together mojito” as well as offering an open bar with a champagne toast.

Shelley claims she doesn’t have a crafty bone in her body, but she does like to decorate, so she did a few easy DIY projects. She wrapped the glass containers for the candy buffet with a mix of ribbons in their color palette.  She used a decorative lable for each type of candy, and then inserted little thank you notes into Chinese take out boxes for guests to fill with treats.

Shelley and Greyson had a photo booth, and Shelley bought items off of Etsy to do the rest of the decorating, like the colorful pom poms that were hung from the light track all over the wine bar for a bit of added fun.

Greyson chose the cake flavors which were pineapple and strawberry, a perfect mix for the tropical theme of the reception.

Shelly’s favorite parts of the day:

Our favorite part of our event was probably dancing all night with our friends & family.  Our DJ was fabulous, & kept the party going until 2am!  Another favorite part was seeing all of our friends & family who came from all over the U.S. to celebrate our day.  I also enjoyed seeing Greyson & his buddies out on the venue’s patio smoking the cigars I’d purchased.

A big thank you to Shelley and Greyson for sharing all the details of their fun home reception with us, and to Jaclyn Marie Photography for submitting it!
