Floral Friday: Over the Rainbow

Color is definitely the name of the game for these beautiful wedding flowers created by Peppertree Floral + Events.  Weddings can be beautiful whether the color palette is pale pastels, or dark dramatic jewel tones, but I myself am partial to a mix of bright happy colors.  Plus with the crazy heat wave turning all the grass and plants brown here in the midwest, I think we could all go for some bright greens, pinks, yellows, and deep cool blues.

Real Midwest Wedding: Bethany and Steve, Kansas City, MO

Bethany and Steve met while they were both out celebrating friends birthdays.  Their respective groups traveled around to different spots throughout the night and ended up at the same Philly Cheese Steak place by evenings end.  Steve made his move, and the two hit it off right away.  After a year and a half of dating over Thanksgiving weekend the couple took a trip to Los Angeles to visit some of Steve’s family and friends.  They decided to head to Pismo Beach to visit some wineries and spend time together.  While walking along and taking in the beautiful views Steve saw his opportunity, and popped the question.  Bethany had no idea he’d been sneaking around for weeks visiting jewelers, and was totally (and happily) surprised.

Who, What, Where ~~ Ceremony: Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.  Reception: The Berg Event Space.  Photography: RPM Photography. Catering: Cupinis.  Flowers: Linda Howe.  Hair and Make-up: Cara Sue Hall.  Transportation: Carey Limousine. Coordination: Event Studio.

Bethany and Steve chose the colors garnet and turquoise, which are their birth stones, as their main color palette.  They originally planned to have the wedding in small-town Skowhegan, Maine, in the church where Bethany’s parents were married, with the reception at the Inn her grandfather built on the Kennebec river.  Logistics became a problem, so they did their best to create feelings of tradition and casual elegance in a woodsy garden setting.

Having tradition and family as part of their day was important to Bethany and Steve.  Her grandmother took flower appliques she had hand-sewn on Bethany’s mother’s dress and put them on her dress almost exactly 37 years later.  Steve wore his grandfather’s cuff links, and Bethany wore the cross pendant her mother gave her for Confirmation.

Bethany’s great uncle has married every couple in her family, including her parents, brother and sisters, and it was only natural that he also officiate for them on their wedding day.

Bethany and Steve did lots of DIY projects for their wedding including designing and printing programs for the ceremony, and ribbon wands for the church send off.

They took lots of pictures throughout Kansas City in various spots where Bethany had memories from growing up, or where they had spent time together as a couple during their courtship.

Steve is from Chicago, they both love old architecture, and they wanted to encourage a great party, so the downtown rustic loft feel of the Berg Event Space was a perfect choice for their event space.  At the reception Bethany says she was intent on giving every detail a personal touch, and did TONS of DIY projects including: butterfly place cards,  colorful pom pom decorations, fun seating chart, the hand drawn thumb print guest book, bird cage cardholder, moss covered initials for the bride and grooms chairs, and the favors which were whoopie pies in little burlap bags.  Various types of vintage vases, dishes, and silver pieces, along with old books were combined together to create eclectic centerpieces with lots of different flowers, and plants.

Bethany’s favorite part of the night:

Having so many family and friends travel to be there, my dresses and veil, the church, floral arrangements, groom’s cake, the special dances, and day-after brunch.  Also at the end of the night the last song was “Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing, and I kid you not, Steve broke out the best Swayze moves I’ve ever seen!  All our bridesmaids were circled around us, making it so special.

A big thank you to Bethany and Steve for sharing all the details of their beautiful day with us, and to the always fabulous Rachel of RPM Photography for submitting their wedding.

Featured Vendor: emmy-ray

I’ve started this post several different times, and have never actually finished it.  Reason being that I’m not the best at promoting myself.  However I am not just the writer of Middle of the Map Weddings, I’m also a wedding vendor myself.  So for today’s featured vendor post, here’s a little more about me and my business, emmy-ray.

Where to find me: website, blog, Facebook, Twitter

I live in Kansas City, along with my husband and my three pups, Hazel, Ollie, and Flynn, in an old Brookside house where my husband actually grew up.  We bought the house from his parents, and have spent the last 3 years doing projects, and updating it to make it our own.  I do my jewelry and floral design work both from a home based studio.

I received my degree in fine arts with an emphasis in printmaking and metalsmithing.  It was never a question in my mind whether or not I would do something creative as a career, it was a just a matter of figuring out what that would be exactly.  I started emmy-ray in 2007, metalsmithing and making my own jewelry on the side, while I worked full time making a local artists designs.  I continued making and selling my work at local shows, and on Etsy, and also did a brief (and wonderful) stint for two years as an art teacher for elementary school students.

I’ve always had a love for flowers.  Nature and floral motifs ran throughout my 2-D, and jewelry designs.  My first experience doing arranging for a wedding was my own in 2008 (above is my bouquet along with a brooch that belonged to my grandmother).  It was stressful, but completely worth it, because it set me on the path of exploring and learning more about floral design.  I began getting referrals from friends who had been at my wedding, and three years later I am so happy to say that I’m able to do it full time.

Our business is indie through and through.  We are a two person operation, it’s me and my mom, who is my assistant and right hand designer.  We both love flowers, and every time we go to the wholesaler to get them for an event, it’s like Christmas morning.  We do weddings of all shapes and sizes, from small backyard events, to big hotel ballrooms with 400 guests.  I’m truly passionate about weddings, and staying current with what’s happening in the industry, which is one of the reasons I decided to start Middle of the Map.

Along with flowers and jewelry, I’ve also recently added  menswear to my repetoire, creating hand sewn bow ties, and also cuff links, including custom orders for weddings.  Although doing floral design has become the bulk of my business, I’ll never lose my love for creating jewelry designs, sewing, and crafting.  It’s great to be able to offer multiple services to a couple getting married including jewelry for the bride and bridesmaids, ties for the men, and flowers for the event!

I always ask featured vendors to give words of advice to couples planning their weddings.  Although by the wedding industries standards my business is still young, if there’s one thing I could say it’s trust your vendors.  Do the research, and pick someone whose style is compatible with your own, and whose work you love.  Although you may have a budget, don’t work with a designer you’re not comfortable with just to save a few dollars.  There are so many wedding vendors out there, you’ll be able to find someone who’s a perfect fit, and who’ll be excited about making your vision for your day come to life!

This editorial shoot comes to us today from the talented Tasha of Red Bird Hills.  A group of great Minnesota vendors got together, just to be fun and creative.  Love that spirit of collaboration!  Much like yesterdays engagement shoot, the location was Architectural Antiques in Minneapolis, which provides a beautiful setting for these gorgeous pictures, and the ethereal ruffled dress?  I die, so lovely!

Midwest Engagement Session: Colleen and Brian

Laurie of Elle Rose Photo shot Colleen and Brian’s wedding at the Architectural Artifacts in Chicago Illinois.  Not only was it a laid back spot that the couple loves to visit, but there are so many options for amazing photos.  Plus you can totally feel the love between these two in the pictures, I think Laurie said it best on her blog “Their pure admiration of one another was so heart warming and capturing the way Brian made Colleen laugh so effortlessly was such an honor.”
