Real Weddings: Pam and Seth, Stillwater, Minnesota

After a recent cold, and super gloomy week her in Kansas City, I’m ready for spring, and today’s real wedding seems to fit the bill.  Although Pam and Seth’s lovely nuptials took place in the fall, their color palette and over all theme is romantic and classic, which makes it perfect for almost any season throughout the year.

Who, What, Where ~~ Stillwater, Minnesota.  Ceremony and Reception: Stillwater Library.  Photography: Erin Johnson Photography. Event Planner: Aalon Events.  Flowers: La Petite Fleur.  Make-up: Matthew Singer.  Transport: Stillwater Trolley.

Pam wore a six pence in her shoe the whole wedding day.  At one point she thought she had lost it but found it weeks later on her closet floor.  She says she plans on starting her own family tradition by handing it down to her daughter to carry on their wedding day.

Right from the start Pam let me know that she is not “artsy” so there weren’t a lot of DIY projects for her and Seth’s wedding.  However she had a very specific vision of what she wanted their day to look like and relied on her talented vendors to make it come to life.

The beautiful flowers were created by the talent at La Petite Fleur, and were a perfect fit for the romantic feel that Pam was looking for.

One of Pam’s favorite parts of the wedding was the exchange of vows.  They had beautiful weather for their outdoor festivities, and held hands as they said their heartfelt I do’s.  Pam had purchased a veil, but broke tradition by deciding not to wear it for the ceremony or reception.

Although their reception took place in September, they had a beautiful indian summer day.  Pam said guests couldn’t get over the outdoor venue, and beautiful weather, and they were even able to cancel the tent they had rented so that people could enjoy the party out in the open.

Pomanders from the ceremony doubled as modern reception centerpieces.

Another favorite moment of the night?  The first dance.  Pam said it was an emotional moment, and she didn’t realize anyone was taking pictures to capture it.  She said that her and Seth felt so lucky to have all their family and friends there to share their day with them.  You can really see all the joy and love in this last picture.

A huge thank you to Pam and Seth for sharing their day with all of us, and also to Erin Johnson Photography for submitting their wedding.

Featured Vendor: Anna Page Photography

When I first saw Anna Wheeler’s photo work I knew that her work would be a perfect fit for Middle of the Map.  Not only are her images beautiful, but her clients are cute, and the weddings she captures are unique and have so many special details.  Today I’d like to share a little bit more with you about her business Anna Page Photography.
Where to find her: Website, Facebook, Twitter
Anna lives in her hometown of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin(about 1 hour north of Madison and Milwaukee). She mainly shoots weddings in Milwaukee and Madison, but travelsall over the state and the country for weddings. She says she’s actually never shot a wedding in Fond du Lac yet!
When I asked how she became interested in taking photos she answered: “I’ve always loved photography. I yearned to get a Hasselblad when I was a teenager mainly just as a hobby. I never considered taking photos as a career. I love to create and direct, (I’m sort of a control freak!) and just love seeing my visions become a reality. Later in life I ended up not getting my Hasselblad, but a Nikon D70.”
She shot her first wedding when her husband’s friend was getting married and had no photographer.  She thought she’d offer to shoot their wedding for free and ended up really enjoying taking photos of people in love! (By the way, she did end up getting her Hasselblad last year).
Anna officially started her business in October of 2005 in Utah. She’s glad she got her start there because the industry is really competitive and it required her to push herself to do better and improve her skills.
I asked Anna what her favorite subject to photograph is and she says the bride: “The bride is always the most beautiful on her wedding day and she knows it.”
Other than brides and weddings, she’s inspired by photographing people in general.   She also enjoys taking pictures of: places with beautiful light and clean lines, and likes playing around with illustrative works, and lately has been interested in nude photography.

Anna loves weddings, and the fact that she can get paid to photograph them is a bonus. Her favorite part of her job is photographing the people and capturing emotions and moments that her clients can relive by looking back at their photos.

“It’s pretty neat to know that my work is hanging up on their walls in their homes.”

When asked what her advice would be for couples looking for a good wedding photographer Anna says do lots of research and obviously pick a few photographers with work that you love.  Try to meet with them, and check out their sample albums.  Ask lots of questions and read their contracts.  You want a photographer that you click with because they will be spending the entire day with you.

Thanks for taking the time to get to know Anna.  Please find more of her beautiful images on her photo blog: www.annapagephotography.com/blog.

Seeing Green: Eco Friendly Wedding Rings

Today I’m sharing a super informative guest post from Laura Caroon of Frozen Music Studios.  I started talking to Laura because of her photography studios beautiful work, and when she mentioned that she’d love to guest post about green weddings I was more than happy to accept.  It’s not my area of expertise, but is something I feel strongly about, and is an important topic to share.  For her first guest post Laura decided to write about green wedding bands, and offers options like raw diamonds, recycled gold, and even wood!  So without further delay, here’s Laura:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you’re already engaged, most likely you have a ring.  But if you’re in the process of looking for setting styles that you like (or you are picking out you or your fiance’s wedding band), consider picking out an eco-friendly option.  You might have to look a little further than your traditional mall jewelry store, but it will be worth it!  Here are a few alternatives to consider:
Purchase “conflict free” diamonds. Brilliant Earth, a leader among  social and eco-conscious jewelers, explains, “Many of the world’s diamonds are harvested using practices that exploit and degrade children, communities, the labor force, and the local environment. Workers are subject to brutality, degrading working conditions, low pay and sometimes death. Labor abuses are built into the industry in many parts of the world, community development remains stagnant, and environmental degradation continues apace.”  Look for diamonds that are certified to be free from violence, human rights abuses, child labor and environmental destruction.  Check out the Brilliant Earth’s website for more information about conflict free diamonds and how to identify them.
Buy rings made from recycled gold. Get rid of that vision of people carefully panning for gold in the streams like at those tourist attractions in the Black Hills.  Instead, think cyanide.  Sulfuric acid.  Mercury.  These are the harsh realities of modern gold mining.  The production of one wedding ring can result in 20 tons of mine waste.  Why dig it up when we’ve already got plenty that can be melted down and repurposed?  Here is an example of a gorgeous Recycled gold ring from ChristineMighion on etsy.
Go a step further and find raw diamond jewelry like these from designer Todd Reed.  All his pieces are hand-forged and fabricated with recycled gold and ethically mined diamonds or diamonds rescued from the cutting room floor. You can find his designs online and at Bead Unique Designs in Velva, ND.
Rings made from salvaged wood are also an option.  Check out the amazing designs from Simply Wood Rings.  Who knew wood rings could be so stunning? These are an especially great option for anyone with metal allergies.
My favorite option = vintage rings.  Pick out a gorgeous ring at an antique store!   Take up the offer to have grandma’s dinner ring passed down to you.  Set aside tradition and get a stone other than a diamond.  Maybe you’ll find a diamond or stone you love but hate the setting?  Have a new band made especially for you.  The options are endless.
Being environmentally friendly doesn’t have to be boring or outdated.  Green can be modern and gorgeous!
Engagement Session: Nikki and Justin
This stylish St.Louis couple, photographed by Ryan Gladstone, opted for mostly classic black and white attire for their engagement session, with little pops of color here and there (love her red hair).
Thanks so much to Ryan Gladstone for submitting this lovely engagement session. Congrats to Nikki and Justin!
